Personally I prefer it when you all write up reviews. It's just easier for me to go at my own pace. But that's just me. |

Johnny Detson ===> The Hayes/Detson storyline has been fascinating. It's very comparable to Luger/Flair. Luger (Detson), the challenger who has been chasing the champion Flair (Hayes) for a while, with the champion's flunkies (Horsemen/HOPE) protecting his title reign. But this promo feels wrong to me. Detson is wrong- Hayes DOESN'T have to beat Detson. If Hayes walks out with the title, even losing the match by DQ or countout, then Hayes can walk out the next night and call Detson a choker who failed again. Detson has to not only beat Hayes, he has to take the title from Hayes. With that setup, the 2/3 falls stipulation works very well- Hayes is saying that Detson can't just get lucky, he has to prove it by beating him twice. But the other metaplot hasn't been touched: Hayes has used HOPE to help him keep the title over AsH, over Spectre, over all challengers. What can Johnny Detson pull out to remove HOPE as a threat? I'm still waiting to see what he has planned. Adrian Freeman ===> I'm enjoying Freeman more and more every time I read him. He's a working class heel- he'll cheat like hell, but sounds reasonable about it. In a few that there are so many heels that are over the top, Freeman comes across as a breath of fresh air. And the Freeman-Supreme Wright feud makes sense; Wright wants to prove he can beat Freeman; Freeman craves the TV title that Wright has. It's simple, but it works. One of the best feuds this cycle, IMHO. The Berserkers ===> Always tough to critique either your flashes or the flashes of your opponents. I liked how they put over the importance of the titles. I would have liked to see some more background information- where was the flash taking place? Chris Hartt ===> Now I'm curious if Kevin and the other kids did beat up the bully :). I'm biased, but I do think Hartt and Black have really helped each other this cycle. A Paladin needs a windmill to tilt at- but I suppose a "Bad Wolf" will have to do. The Platinum Club ===> Randall's such a punk jackass that you just want someone to smack him upside the head- and you'd really want Kruger to be the one who does it. I applaud an artist who can generate that reaction, and Vermeer does it so effortlessly. Gold Rush ===> Like Platinum Club, I love the dynamic between the partners. Beau Wilson manages to hit the sweet spot where fans like him even when he's acting obnoxious (unlike Vermeer, who acts obnoxious to the point that no one likes him). The HEAT ===> As one-half of the current tag team champions, I am morally opposed to seeing this many good tag teams in the fed. The HEAT tend to get dominated by Arvelle, but Najem seems to developing his own persona. Sons of Anarchy ===> I can always appreciate a tag team that's been drinking so much they don't remember what month it is... Cow & Chicken ===> Dammit! Too many good tag teams here. All of you... go away! Go to AWA or somewhere. But leave the chairs... Rob Cole ===> Cole's the first flash that is concentrating on the Shattered Dream Rumble itself, and he's clearly setting it up as 'himself vs. the world'. I like it, but outside of the feud with Young, I'm not sure where you go with him. Erich Seiger ===> Seiger is starting to find his own voice, instead of using Dallas Lawson to speak for him. It's tough to play a monster face, and I suspect Seiger is ready for a solo feud (HvD? Cole?) The Spectre ===> Here's my question after reading his flash. I know Spectre thinks (a) HOPE must fall and (b) He thought Senor Cloak Dos could handle the task, but now realizes SCD is too weak. Is Spectre going to find someone else to mentor into taking down HOPE? Sinister ===> The knock on Sinister has always been that his flashes are too long. This one is shorter- and it's one of his better flashes. It addresses the Rumble and the Mystery Man. Sinister being #1 in the Rumble fits- he's always been the man fighting the odds. Here's a side question- would Sinister turning heel be the most surprising turn in PVW now? I know SDC, but SDC is such an overkilling face that it seems too obvious. Sinister's been a face in the fed forever, and done properly, the 'locker room leader' turning on the fans could be a great storyline. Uncle Frank ===> Creepy and Funny and Disturbing and Brilliant. I'm sure the 'breaking the action figures' gimmick has been done on the WWE or WCW or somewhere before, but I can't recall where. It's such a great way to get over wanting to destroy someone without actually attacking them. Marcus Manson ===> Short and to the point. I don't think Manson's got enough credit for this cycle. Uncle Frank has written some fantastic flashes, but Manson has been able to hold his own against Frank, getting in his shots and taking his lumps. Talion ===> I get the point of the flash- "I want to talk about the future, not the past". But, having brought up his past so many times, the fans aren't going to want to forget. They'll be playing the "Who's Talion?" game until he's unmasked. Derek Weaver ===> I like the flash. Gives Fontana a measure of respect (that Weaver hasn't shown many others) and helps differentiate Weaver from the other members of HOPE. William Craven ===> The "Major Damage" character always confused me, but I think I'm finally getting the names straight. It's a good flash- he puts over all of HOPE, specifically HvD, and sells the match well. Heath Dawson ===> I like Dawson as a character. He comes across of a jockish face character, but with enough flaws that he could slip into a tweener or heel role. I do think he needs a second character- a manager or valet or cameraperson or someone- to act as a sounding board for his comments. I think it would add to the character. Perry Fontana ===> Weaver's dance partner. Talks about their similarities, and how he has "the good kind of fear" back. A little long, but it sets up the showdown well. Joe Hardy ===> Meta Question- is the tape of audio only? If so, what images (if any) are the audience supposed to see while this is going? Supreme Wright - Television Champion ===> Freeman's Counterpart. The face that Wright, even as champion, feels the need to prove himself makes this feud work. Great job. Christopher Black - American Champion ===> This feud works because both characters make such a natural feud- Hartt, the face who is always fighting for a cause, and Black, the sociopathic heel who considers everyone 'fair game'. Max Weinrib & Salih Mubarak - Tag Team Champions ===> Always hard to criticize your own flashes. Hopefully we put over both the Berserkers and the other tag teams. Gibson Hayes - PVW World Heavyweight Champion ===> Finally, the champ. It's an excellent promo, a great rundown of the Hayes-Detson storyline. It's also a point of no return; if Detson doesn't win the title, he is being set up to wear the 'choker' label. I haven't made any predictions for Shattered Dreams, so I'll make a two part Prediction now. I predict that Johnny Detson will beat Gibson Hayes for the title; the second part of this prediction? If Hayes retains the title- by any means- then Detson is out of PVW for good. I don't see how the character survives in the fed if he chokes. I'm intrigued how this will end- and because of that, the storyline has been a beautiful success. |

Mike, I was throwing this around with Rob last night... you have mentioned a few times that Dawson could use a second. Could you expand on that? |

Dawson doesn't need a second, imo. Talks well enough on his own, which a male manager would do to hype him up. A valet would take some edge off the character, as he's out to kick ass...not get cheers or sympathy. As for the dopey friend...he's already got Supreme Wright.

Sure. As always, the opinions are mine and mine alone ![]() In general, I think it's easier to write flashes when there are two people involved- a tag team partner, manager, valet, even the cameraperson. It allows the wrestler to not only talk and perform an action, but react to what the second person says and does. Dawson's character (as I'm reading him) is a good athlete who's made a lot of bad decisions in his past. He's not fully on the side of the angels, but he's trying to learn from his mistakes. But all we're seeing is from the point of view of Dawson- his words, his actions. Adding a second person- a manager to try and guide him, a friend from the past, some sort of mentor... anyone- would give a second perspective on Dawson- something for the reader to judge besides his direct point of view. Also, because Dawson has made a lot of mistakes, he's a good candidate to want someone to help guide him like a manager. Or, if not a manager, someone he (semi-)trusts to make sure he doesn't get screwed over. |

When they speak to the cameraperson, that's when it turns into one of those creepy pre-porn scene interviews. Cameraperson: "So...how old are you?" |
