Now that Wrestlemania has broken with the tradition of having the WWE title match end the show, it's not a foregone conclusion anymore!

I understand that a barbed wire match wouldn't work as a main event, especially in a fed like AWA. But I have to think that it has to be one of the most anticipated matches on the card.

I wasn't so much puzzled about what was going on last... nor first... but the stuff in between!

I don't think that a poll to determine the sixth match on the show would work very well.

Then again, you _are_ the guy that made a Superclash match to determine the #6 contender to the National Title...

To me this is easy, and just to go a little beyond a canned, "The title match goes on last!" response, a little reasoning.

The World Title is very new, the promotion is desperate for some epic encounters to help continue to legitimize it in the eyes of the fans and, frankly, the locker room. You could hedge your bets by putting another equally "epic" encounter on last (although I think only Team Sharif/Royalty would qualify as "big" enough to fill those shoes, and that's not casting aspersions on anyone else by any means) but it would be just that, hedging your bets. Our promoter's usually not a "hedge your bets" kind of guy, so it makes perfect sense that he takes the new title, puts it squarely in what has to be the most uncomfortable pressure-cooker situation in wrestling (main eventing the biggest show of the year) and then just lives with the results.

Of course, we have the convenience of already being very familiar with the work both people IN that match can crank out, how damned excellent it is and has been, and as a result you have a pretty awesome title match to close out the AWA's granddaddy of them all.

For the tl;dr crowd, title match last. :D

C'mon people! Little more love for the Barbed Wire match~! This is something that's been brewing for 14 years! The first singles match between Craven and Martinez! They've been on the same roster half a dozen times trading words 'though not blows, they've been in battle royals and each man's eliminated the other in that type of match. Finally, in AWA, the score will be settled~!
And it was at this moment that the entire world realized, in unison, that tandem bicycles were AWESOME~!

Here is the order I'd run it:

Rave vs Gaines /Martinez: Shorter action packed match to get people into it.
Aso/Maximus: the traditional slow big man match spot
BVB/SDW vs Aces: tag match here with fire and hate, contrast to...
Steal the Spotlight: Definitely the spot fest of the night. Should cheer things up after the past couple matches.
Vasquez/Dufresne: back to hate! Plus a break from tag action. Also a longer match to talk about their history and about the other matches coming.
Bishops vs Lynch/Donovan: slow the show down in accordance with what follows
Watkins/Petrow: gimmicks and titles would overshadow this if put on before
Barbed WIre Match: big pick me up'er!
Sharif and team vs Royalty: it's the match that won't be out shocked by the barbed wire match. Lots of history and surprises in this
Ladder Match: separate the gimmicks and make this a deserving co main event PLUS highlight the title
World title match: other matches have more heat but you should always keep the title strong

There you o. Some actual real life experience and lessons I've learned from old timers on how to build a card. It's like a match: needs its rest holds and high spots in the right places

Like I said, I never had any doubt that the World Title match was going on last. And as Rob said, the only other match I would've considered in that slot was the Royalty/Team Sharif tag but it wasn't even a serious consideration.

It was the in-between area that I was having trouble with! So many great matches, so many big feuds being ended. So many "first time evers" It's tough.

EDIT: And Wallie makes a good point that I meant to mention yesterday. It's not always setting up the show in order of "most anticipated" matches from bottom to top. There's a method to the madness of setting the match order... it's why you often see Divas matches or random tag matches after big Wrestlemania matches.

But I imagine that there are several "non-match" surprises that only you are privy to, that also affect the pacing and feel of the show?
