I must write Houston awful, I always pictured him in my head, in the ring, as being very Lesnar-ish... with a mix of Hansen and a few others. But with my limited wrestling knowledge I must've been doin' it wrong! I guess just giving him an F5 finisher doesn't make him Lesnaresque! :)

Although I could very easily see him turning into that type of creature/freak... if he wasn't retired that is. Would just involve slapping a heel tag on him and and having him toss people around... but that isn't very Ronnish, now is it!?

Speaking of which, the one character type that strikes me as odd that we've failed at having many of is the loverboy. Jimmy Garvin, Eddie Gilbert, Rick Rude, Big Poppa Pump, Rick Martel, Luger as a heel - that dickhead heel who was obsessed with his own looks and physique and thought he was God's gift to women.

It's weird you mention this, I was thinking about that this morning. How has Rick Rude not been cloned... er.. homaged... yet?

I think the reason the Lesnar vibe never caught on is because you call him the Athens, Georgia Madman.

In my opinion, when you slap the tag madman on someone, they're going to be viewed as a crazy brawler.

Tex Violence and Caleb Temple come to mind as people to carry the Madman moniker, both of whom were thought of as brawlers. Also, I'm never going to believe someone with a Deliverance accent is the genetic freak Muad'Dib of wrestling who bridges the chasm of technical wrestling, power wrestling and aerial wrestling.

But that's just me.

I'll agree with Andy on this. I picture Houston as more brawler than genetic freak. Plus, we never really play up the power aspect of Houston's game where Lesnar's throwing around the Big Show in German Suplexes.

Now, we just need to find someone to German Mizusawa in an earthquaking moment.

Fair enough :)

Stupid nickname!

A change to "The Athens, Georgia Genetic Freak" is in order! I missed the boat on my Lesnar ripoff with Houston... Back to the Lesnar rip-off drawing board! At least he'll always have the F-5.. :)

but I always wondered what would have happened if Scott had been a singles wrestler for the majority of his early career instead of later during his (also awesome) Big Poppa Pump days.

a) They totally could have done that with pre-steroid-overload Steiner, but...
b) The only thing 'awesome' about Big Poppa Pump was the interviews, and only then for making fun of him. My college roommate and I would 'translate' from Steiner to English, and that was it as far as entertainment value. Though to be fair, the advent of subtitled Scott Steiner rants mean that the entertainment is lasting. :-D

Big Poppa Pump was also a suplex machine, although his mobility was shot by then. He was the only man portrayed that could fight Goldberg toe-to-toe and he was taking out faces by the handful. And his gimmick was basically a dude obsessed with his body and women who was an out-of-control monster heel that scared the hell out of people. It was pretty cool, to be honest.

As for Houston, he just doesn't have that aura of terrifying power and skill that Lesnar had. Lesnar would run-in and casually F5 Big Show just because he could. He would no-sell chairshots to the head. He was basically as much of a genetic freak and unbelievable monster as you could get...on top of that, he could out-wrestle you too. Lesnar had a million feats that you just can't wrap your head around(Catches Randy Orton off a crossbody rolls through to his feet and tosses him onto his shoulders for a F5...hit Big Show with a running powerbomb...gorilla pressed Rikishi...deadlifts Undertaker off a tombstone reversal right into a F5).

And Blue...well, I'm working on that Dr. Death clone for the MVC homage, so maybe we'll see MAMMOTH take an Oklahoma stampede. lol

His overhead belly to belly was awesome, although Brock Lesnar's soon became awesomer.

Pffft. Someone pay homage to Dory Funk Jr. and have him make Mizusawa submit to a spinning toe hold. In fact, where's the Funk brothers homage?

Being in Texas, how long before Louis Matsui engineers a J-Tex stable?

He needs to form the "Louis Matsui Army", team-up with an Arab and then make the stable about 20 members strong with 5 tag teams in there for no apparent reason.
