"EXTREME" WRESTLING... GOES OLD-SCHOOL?

PORTLAND, Oregon -- Old-School Wrestling, first run from 2002-2003 and reopening January 2013, was always known to strive to cater to fans of classic technical wrestling, often bucking the "hardcore" trend that was so prevalent in the business at the turn of the millenium. However, with noted "extreme" promotion BSCW recently on hiatus, and a limited source of employment options available... wrestlers whose styles would usually be called anything but "old-school" have been applying for employment with OSW.

And, perhaps even more surprisingly, they're being hired.

"'Hardcore wrestling' is a myth," Ice said during a recent interview with a reporter from the Oregonian. "It's not really a style of wrestling, so to speak... it's a way to fill an empty roster and put some butts in the seats. Sure, places like the Empire took it and ran with it, and there are guys like Ezra and Annis and Temple who've made it an artform... but it wasn't invented as a self-sustaining style of wrestling. It was invented as a way for independent promoters to take a roster that has 5 actual wrestlers and 12 inexperienced kids, and keep the kids from looking outclassed by the wrestlers while the promoter pockets the profits he would have spent signing 17 actual wrestlers.

"But I'm not some rookie promoter, and I'm not in this for a quick buck. I've been in this business for two decades. I know the real wrestlers from the garbage filler. And I'm not going to let talented wrestlers sit unemployed during a slow period, just because they happen to be more experienced playing with the kids than with their own kind. Or because being forced into those garbage matches caused one of those inexperienced kids to get hurt in a match he had no business being in. We've got one hell of a roster forming here. Some of these guys will sink... they won't be able to get out of that element, and I'll wish them well when they move on.

"But some of these guys will swim. And that's nothing but good for Old-School Wrestling. And hell, most of these guys have already proven they can swim before in other promotions... it's not like I'm signing a bunch of no-names. Every name on that list is a capable veteran. So I'm gonna throw them in the ring with each other on the first show, and we'll see which of them has the talent to be able to rise to the top once we take away the barbed-wire and baseball bats."

Two of the recent signees, Bang Bang Mangum and "Angry" Angus Andrus, have actually been barred from active competition in many state-side promotions for their violent styles. Ice recently assisted Mangum in reinstating his ability to perform in with the Oregon athletic commision, and has now added Andrus, famous through the independent circuit for his "13 DQ Fiasco" of increasingly-violent disqualifications, which many had thought labeled him "untouchable" by a promotion that catered towards technical wrestling. When asked for comment, Andrus seemed to contradict the optismitic thoughts of his new employer, "Listen, I made my living off of hardcore style wrestling. I was in Japan working for J-Pro for over five years. You know what kinda matches they have in J-Pro? They ain't pretty. And if the OSW had a problem with my style of wrestling -- which isn't exactly old-school -- I don't think they would have signed me. But, I guess we'll just have to see how it all pans out, won't we?"

Andrus will make his OSW debut on the first show, in a three-man match known as a "three-way dance", where he face two other ring veterans who are fighting for second chances... and who won't be intimidated by the violent history of "Angry" Angus.

Frank Wilkes, known by many as the "Registered Sex Offender", had disappeared recently following his bloody feud with Dirty Dog Unique Allah in SPW. Wilkes, who is an actual registered sex offender by law, has become a fan favorite in recent years due in part to the violence of his matches, which culminated recently during a bloody recreation of the 7 Tables of Fear match in SPW against Dirty Dog Unique Allah. However, according to his OSW contract, he has officially rechristened himself "Prom King" Frank Wilkes, for reasons that aren't yet known.

Wilkes and Andrus will be joined in the match by former BSCW/NEO-Pro veteran Ian Finnegan. Finnegan, who has not wrestled actively in nearly a decade due to a fight with drug abuse, claims to finally be completely sober. Rumors persist that his long-time tag team partner, Odin Trollslayer, has also been signed by OSW... however, that is unconfirmed, and Trollslayer has not been announced as a member of the OSW roster.

A second match will feature two more-recent members of the BSCW roster. "So Cool" Shiloh, a popular young commodity in the independent scene today who had risen to success in BSCW, has been signed to a full-time OSW contract. He will face a man who signed with BSCW shortly before the promotion's hiatus, Rob Nolan. Nolan, who was once known in the indies as "Ravishing" Rob Reynolds prior to a car accident that almost ended his career, seemed uncomfortable with the link to the promotion known as Blood Sweat and Chairs Wrestling, saying, "BSCW was just a way to get a job again. But OSW is a place where I think I can truly fit in and can grow."

Both matches, Nolan-versus-Shiloh and Andrus-versus-Finnegan-versus-Wilkes, are scheduled to take place at the inaugural Old-School Wrestling event. OSW "Insession", as the show will be called, has been formally scheduled for January 15th, 2013 at the OSW Schoolhouse in Portland... tickets for Old-School Wrestling "Insession" will go on sale starting January 1st.
