God help me, I agree with Wallie. The "biggest" characters in the AWA are/were nods to old wrestlers, not direct clones.

James Monosso is a nod to nobody. Maybe Terry Funk in 1989, but in an entirely different direction?

It's well established that Broussard was made to look like Shane Douglas, and talk and act like Larry Zybysko/Nick Bockwinkle/Frasier Crane.

Stevie tapped into Flair, but I always thought he was more menacing. There was anger behind Stevie in the Syndicate, while prime Flair talked more about his clothes and his broads.

Juan Vasquez of course became the greatest homage of all, as he TRULY captured the Dusty vibe. And he didn't sing one "rhyme", didn't throw a single elbow. He just tapped into the everyman thing that I didn't think the character had in him.

Dufresne played the Flair role well, but I never thought he was a direct Flair homage. I could never really put my finger on who Dufresne reminded me of, in fact.

Ron Houston was a conglomerate of Southern brawlers, bad English and ridiculous punctuation. But he worked!

And of course, Kolya shed tear for Juan Vasquez.

Is it odd that the one thing I took away from this post is that I kinda miss writing for Kolya?

There's also a big difference between a clone and paying homage to real wrestlers. Paying homage could be a signature move, a style of hair, a prop he brings to the ring, and a bit of the same attitude. Calling a character the Grave Digger with a female sidekick named Morticia who carries an urn that said character channels for super strength would be cloning and probably not go over too well. Having a guy with one name who uses a tombstone piledriver and bases his feuds off attacking his opponents fears or personal lives may fair better...especially if he wins at every SuperClash.

Most characters can be traced back too a real wrestler at some point but then they evolve and take on a personality of their own based on who is writing them.

Is it bad that I bought a little notebook for my car, so that when I have a good idea for the history of Gulf Coast Wrestling I can write it down right away?

That's dangerous! Get an iPhone and let Siri take notes for you.

While Monosso really WAS created a long long time ago (all his backstory actually happened), I modded him to be something like a Bruiser Brody/Cactus Jack pastiche (mostly Brody).

He's gone in his own direction from there, which is to me the difference between a homage and a clone. Sharif started as the Iron Shiek in all but appearance, but went down his own storyline trail. I think that is the key. Not replicating stories, but taking the characters in a different direction.

When I created Dufresne in PWR, he was built as a Rick Rude homage, but once he went out and took an eye, we kind of lost that forever. Though I still want him to steal some valet or face character's sister.

A WWF-era Rick Rude would be cool. I know Rex Summers was kind of envisioned as being in that mold, but he never went all the way with it that I saw (I admit to not really paying as much attention to him as I used to in the last few months).

My whole goal in running him for that short period was the hope that someone would see the potential in him and scoop him up. Alas, apparently I failed in that because he drifts unhandled and silent. Once SuperClash is over, I might put another run in with him if no one else will but that's not as good as someone else doing it.

With some negotiation with Waterson International, Rex Summers would make a great addition to the Matsui Corporation/Foundation/Family/Dynast.

Just sayin'.

Blue wanted a Willie Mack at one point. Someone should do an homage. Watched some PWG this weekend, guy is tremendous.

I am also really starting to dig Michael Elgin, speaking of PWG.

I was reading something earlier where Jim Ross called Bobby Heenan the best all-around worker in wrestling history (I may be paraphrasing) and I was thinking how awesome it would be to have a manager leading a stable that was more obsessed with ending some babyface's career than anything else. They would still value titles and glory... but the ultimate glory would be ending that babyface's career.

Wasn't that sorta happening with Vasquez? I actually thought that whole angle was a throwback to the Family vs Hogan.

Isn't that what the Unholy Alliance is doing to Monosso? Sure, Jer is basically FEUDING WITH HIMSELF...but it's the same basic premise.

Willie Mack is on TV out here regularly via NWA Championship Wrestling From Hollywood. I'm not as big on him as Wallie seems to be though.

Your welcome for that great insight!

NWA Hollywood is completely unwatchable to me. It's just so low budget. Plus the ring looked like it was 5 ft x 5 ft. I wonder if it's gotten any better.
