See, I had no context. I initially thought, who the hell would ever cheer this guy? And then the corsage and the Pedo Crowd, I was like, what the hell is the gag here, I'm missing something.

Jerod and Moze helped make Preston Mayfield a cult face (then again, I just use him for pure fun).
Have I told you how much I loathe your continued existence today?

I agree with Doran on the reactions. Most of the character should just be getting an empty arena response and have to "earn" the hate/love that comes their way. Naturally for a first event for OSW, most of the fans there will be old OSW fans (how many brand new fans would show up to a first event for wrestlers they never heard of or know nothing about? The exception is if they were SEEKING out a certain wrestler) so it makes sense that certain guys will get a pop or a reaction from the old fan base.

For me, when I think of the event, I think it would be full of mostly Epitome of Cool fan boys (since that's what was hyped leading up to the event) so if the team that comes out is anyone BUT them...they're going to get bottles tossed out at them by the fans and boo'ed right out of the arena.

I thought about this when it came to the angus entrance. My reasoning was that angus made whatever it is that he has to his name in a garbage fed in Japan, the very kind of fed OSW fans would despise. I wrote on the assumption that the 'smart' fans in the crowd would be aware of this history and want to seize the opportunity to let him know he is not welcome here. To them he's tarnishing the name of old school wrestling. I don't think the disapproval was too over the top.

See I took it for the kind of show that was in a venue a step up from a high school gym - the kind of show where you may have only bought tickets for the Epitome of Cool, but any face you recognized was Steve Austin just for not being some local kid.

I think there might be a case of people running in smaller circles withing our overall circle of e-w. People that made a name in AWA/PVW/UWF are unquestionably a big deal, but to people that mostly handle in or era the smaller Feds, their experience differs and who they perceive as guys that would get a big reaction differ accordingly. Also with Wilkes being a local boy made good, the reaction makes a little more sense.

Yep, in HUGE Preston actually got a somewhat mixed reaction after selling HUGE GM Barney Johnson to white slavers and then squatting in his house for months. Well, squat/cook meth or something equally disgusting.

Barney almost shot him.

It was grand...
And it was at this moment that the entire world realized, in unison, that tandem bicycles were AWESOME~!

This. Kinda. :)

A bit bigger than the high school gym setting... but not by a long shot. A better example would be very early ECW (circa Eastern/Extreme transition), with the rabid but still small fanbase. Or even early TNA, before it went to shit. Even big name guys from the second level of feds would still be known to the types of diehard fans who show up regularly to shows of this size... lots of internet fans in the crowd. Especially since our Flash Show is broadcasted on YouTube. This is my justification. Here's a dancing banana.

And in reality, Wilkes isn't a household name to the PVW/AWA/UWF readers... but to the indy/hardcore fans, he certainly is. SPW exists in our world just as much as PVW does, even though we don't consider it as prestigious. It would be akin to saying that Tommy Dreamer or Taz wouldn't deserve a huge pop if he joined the just-opened TNA because he wasn't a WWF/WCW guy. Plus, he usually plays the face, and he had the hometown pop going for him.

How many people knew who Bryan Danielson was before WWE ever turned him into Daniel Bryan? How much did those people manage to screw with the reactions of literally thousands of people in attendance? It's those people who guided the Wilkes reaction... and with a much smaller crowd to manipulate.

I also point out that there isn't a single UWF/AWA/PVW/EMWC/etc World Champion on our singles roster (spoiler alert, heh). A fact I realized when a handler considered bringing one in recently, actually, LOL. So while yeah, Black and Uncle Frank are pretty big names... they're still just a couple of Intercontinental Champions in the WWE-to-TNA comparison, it's not like we stole Stone Cold or the Rock. Even though most of us would rather step into the ring with the WWE guys than the PVW ones. :)

Now, all of that being said... "too big for OSW" can go screw itself when it comes to my tag division. :ninja:

CARD UPDATE: OK, so, uh, Tuesday didn't happen. I worked 12 hours today, and tomorrow I may be, uh, distracted. I'm looking at this weekend, with the promise that it'll be worth the wait. :)
Working on new characters you didn't see a decade ago. Honest.

I think you're missing why there is confusion here. The issue isn't that someone from a different circle is getting a big reaction. The issue is that he is (was?) a pedophile face, with mothers seemingly bringing their children to be sodomized by him. Hence the confusion.

For those unfamiliar with the character Wilkes isn't a child molester; and the nature of his RSO status has never been clarified, but when I finally get around to it, it will probably be harmless and innocent, like public urination at night on school property (horrible bosses).

I think his basic history of inexplicable getting over as a face was covered in the OSW update that mentioned his signing. The introduction was designed to get across that Wilkes is known for an offensive gimmick and was a face. I think it accomplished that. I apologize if it was jarring, Jeremy, but felt it was preferable to a slow burn of pedophile jokes for the next two months.

I was told Monday... which was obviously yesterday. So, I don't know. Hope everything is kosher with Jerod. I have a hankering for some Part 2. But, I like Jerod and he seems like a busy guy, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

With that... go OSW!

I think the general consensus is that it's never too early for that. :)

I would like to state for the record that the rumours that Christopher Black shanked Jerod are COMPLETELY unfounded!
