On a side note, allow me to use this forum to vent about how I wanted to go to my first PWG show in probably four years or so next month and I didn't buy tix because I thought I had time only to find out right now it sold out within days of going on sale.

Grrrrrr.

Which show? Ten? Because it says on the page they'll have a limited quantity at the door. That is a pretty rockin' looking lineup.

Yeah, "limited quantity at the door" scares me though since I'll be driving a couple of hours in traffic to get there and if I work that day, I'll be arriving shortly before the official start of the show.

Hadn't really realized it's been that long since I've gone to one of their shows until I started looking at results earlier this week.

Yeah that's a solid line up.

I haven't watched anything Indy in a long time so I really have no new gimmick matches to add/offer. Maybe a special one night trios tourney on an event across the Texas/Mexico border. It'd be fun to even read a summary/highlight version of a house show like that. -- but that's not really a gimmick match.

A twist on that could be a stable series matches with random matches taking place over the course of multiple weeks with rotating members representing their stable/team.

I'd mark for a TV Title Championship Scramble since there's a zillion guys angling around it right now and it'd be nice to expand the championship history past 1 champ.

Alphonse Greem vs. Chris Staley in a Ground Chuck Challenge match.

AWA needs a signature "stuff someone inside of a ____" match. Something unique to one of our characters.

AWA Bingo - create a bingo moves board and the competitors have to try and make a bingo line to win -- good luck keeping track!

Porter Crowley vs. Nenshou in a managers cane match! Losers manager must abandon their cane....forever!

Lethal Lumberjack Match - I'm just making this up, but what if lumberjacks could actually score a pin. Imagine Dufresne vs. Supreme Wright for the title. If one of them is thrown out of the ring ANYONE can pin them AND win the title. Chaos, pure chaos.

Having just watched the new Wargames DVD collection, I would like to suggest the TOWER OF DOOM as a gimmick match for the AWA.

Blue: Hm, yeah, hadn't really considered the notorious LA traffic. Yikes, feel sorry for you, man.

Guzz: A manager's cane match?! *GASP* Why, if Victor T. Nolan Esq. loses his cane, he can't walk! Is that what you want on your conscience?!

I do like your idea for the Ground Chuck Challenge match though :D

I have this match idea that I kinda was working on earlier...

Four guys in the match. Two names drawn at random. They wrestle until a decision but have a ten minute time limit. If they go to a draw, two names are drawn again and those two start wrestling. A decision would only eliminate someone, not end the match. Of course, the last man left wins.

So, it has elements of a gauntlet match... a Royal Rumble... a Four Corners match... etc.

Ah, discussions of gimmick matches always brings me back to one of my favorite stories.

Back in 1996 or so, when we were doing our tabletop wrestling RPG campaign, one of our players who was known for, ah, having the tactical sense of a radish and writing verbal checks his ass couldn't cash, was bragging about his tag team. His tiny martial artist tag team which had never done anything of note, and which had mediocre stats because he ignored them (in the game, sending wrestlers out to get wins and money via jobber squashes was the best way to build them, and he was always giving those opportunities to his favorite character).

So two of the other players, the two CRAZY ones who were not really gamers or even big wrestling fans but who somehow loved this game, randomly decided to pair up their psychotic monster heel characters (played by psychotic players!) and challenge the first player to a tag match. The first player came back with "yes, and it can have any stipulations you want."

"Anything?"

"ANYTHING."

Cue an entire afternoon of having to explain that we were not going to have any kind of matches that involved shark tanks, crocodile-filled moats, electrified razor wire ropes, slabs of concrete replacing the ring mat, or eating your opponent as the only win condition. "HE SAID ANYTHING! ANYTHING MEANS ANYTHING!" And the dummy they challenged was like "Yes! I accept these matches! I will win!", which would be the e-w equivalent of Stars And Stripes Clayton Shaw beating 2001 Alex Martinez in a death match.

Ah, good times...

For instance, I've always thought an AWA Cibernetico would be a lot of fun.

You know I'm with you on this one, Blue. A Torneo Cibernetico could be off the chain. You'd just have to find large enough teams to put together. And, of course, have a lot of patience to write it.

 for a Cibernetico. So much possibility in one match.

There's plenty of alternatives!

You could always steal one of UWF's gimmick matches, the Road to the Gold battle royale.

Concept: A battle royale with a twist: Each competitor draws the name of another competitor and that's the person they need to eliminate. When a wrestler is thrown over the top, the person who eliminated him takes that wrestler's target.

Example: Scott Daniels tosses Youth Gone Wild. YGW's target was Dan Kauffman, so now Daniels' next target is Kauffman.

Exception: Suppose when Daniels tossed YGW, that YGW's target was Daniels. Now Scott Daniels gets a wild card and can eliminate any wrestler he chooses.

This continues until two wrestlers are left and those two wrestle a best two-of-three-falls match.

What wrestlers have to keep in mind is this: Each wrestler has a target to eliminate, but each wrestler is the target of another wrestler. In the Daniels-YGW example where YGW's target is Kauffman, Daniels could be targeted by Crimson Joe Reed, meaning Daniels can't just focus on YGW, but has to keep an eye on Reed.

Road To The Gold was interesting, but it's something that really worked because of the action-bracket format of UWF. In a full play-by-play, it wouldn't be that good. It also requires a videoscreen to keep track of who is allowed to eliminate who. AWA has no videoscreen, so it can't really work; there's no way for wrestlers or fans to know who can eliminate whom.

Now, reduce the number of competitors to six or so, and make it pinfall/submission to eliminate, and then the match may be doable in full play-by-play. You'd still need a screen, though. We could have a screen as a one-off somewhere.

Another concept from UEW I liked was Four Pillars Of Hell. It was a five-way match with four ways to be eliminated: pinfall, submission, being strapped to a stretcher, or put through a table. Each elimination method could only be used once. So one guy would get pinned, one would submit, etc etc. You can easily substitute win conditions (no tableshots in AWA until the right moment) and the match would retain the same feel.
