One of the reviews I've gotten e-mailed to me pointed out what an amazing stretch of "big match" promos Terry has put together for Wright. It really is quite impressive when you go back to look at them.

As I just told you in email: Agreed. Not sure anyone is better at Go-Time match rps right now.

I am curious, off topic, as to what the match writing roll call was this show.

I'm guessing you're asking who wrote what matches.

Umm... that'd be me.

Well, Guzz wrote the Shane/Carver "match" but... yeah.

Thoughts as I go!

Opening: loved it! Could almost hear the old “they are building a cage...” promo from the original NWA.

Staticy Voice Over: Pretty cool. Wonder how it pays off.

Rage vs. White: Aside from Supreme Wright, I am digging Shadoe Rage the most, and have ever since he beat the crap out of de Klerk. Donnie White is also a lot of fun to read. Fun match. Bucky was really all over Rage in this one, but I think that’s a good thing. Rage wins, and he should have. As I said, I am really into Rage of late. I’m curious to see where he goes next. Though it looks like he’ll be tangling more with the Shane Gang. Maybe a Carver/Rage team up at some point? Or Rage and the Rave. Which are some promos that I’m dying to read.

Wyldestyling Challenge: I like the “they’re already in the ring, just ring the bell and let’s get it going” way of opening the match. I liked the match. Chaotic, but in a good way. Filled with reversals. Not sure about “you can only win by countout,” but then, I am not the person to comment on wacky match stips.

Combat Corner: One day, I should make a Combat Corner graduate. One day...

Broussard DVD: I’ll buy it!

TS3 & Patterson: Shane Gang is all over the first part of this show! Well, that’s an interesting way to get out of a match. Considering how much emphasis TS3 has put on “I’ve been challenging you to this for a year and you never accepted,” in the buildup to this, his ducking out of it is kind of weird. Cowardly heel to be sure, but still a bit anticlimactic. But it was a good promo. TS3 always does good work.

Crowley: That was pretty awesome. Got the maniacal stuff down perfectly.

Crowley vs. Sawyer: 35 is an advanced age? Thanks Blue, for making me feel old! Though yes, it is old for a wrestler to be breaking in. Good match. I really like the Crowley gimmick, and the match really got it over. The biting at the end and the stuff with the black cloak was interesting, though the black cloak controlling him might be too close to Monosso and the cane.

Carver promo: Good stuff.

Monosso DVD: I’ll buy two!

Dave Bryant: My poor addled brain always becomes hopelessly perplexed when Dave feuds with Dave. But this was a great promo! Bryant as the repentant, former heel is awesome. Thus far, this is my favorite promo on the show.

Robert Donovan Promo: Jackwagons! See, now that needs to be on a T-shirt. Awesome promo. I’ve always thought Donovan was great.

Lynch Promo: after my time in the wilderness, that is, when I was teaching too many classes and had no time to pay attention to e-w, it was the hardest thing in the world to remember what Jack’s “voice” was when I finally got back. I think I am finally starting to get it back. The lack of Bell means that James is sort of stuck with the smallest amount of promo time. I really liked Rob’s contribution, as I always do. I was pretty happy with what I wrote for Jimmy and Jack too. And, like I said, I am finally starting to remember how to write Jack again.

Bullies vs. Lynches: I so love Bucky’s irrational hatred of the Lynches. Match opens with a great brawl. And I am already loving it. Really digging the crazy wildness in the opening part of this match. Things have settled a bit. Jack’s history in St. Louis is mentioned – awesome. Hmm, I wonder why James’ rat is getting so many mentions... I am really into this match. I knew how this one was going end, but I think it was executed perfectly. Awesome match!

Sandra Hayes: A little “light,” but good for what it was. Is Dane the most put upon guy ever? I think so.

Dufresne promo: Pretty good. I enjoyed it.

Cooper vs. Bryant: All of Royalty is out. This should be interesting. And Dusscher shows up in the middle. That’s uh, interesting. The match is a draw. This feud must continue! And that’s good. This is very enjoyable stuff.

Dane is with Dusscher: So the teeny bopper pop idol is drinking Budweiser? Hmm... Though maybe he’s no longer the spokesperson for Non-Threatening Boys Magazine any longer, if Bucky is to be believed. I guess we’ll see how this all shakes out at Homecoming.

The Blue Man Group : We’re going to find out who one of the Wise Men are! Nice. A good hook for Homecoming.

Donnie White and the Ring Workers: TS3 is not in the building! I enjoyed this one more than the Sandra Hayes bit. And it ain’t over with the Rave! Liked this a lot.

Carver/TS3: I was worried for a minute there we’d get the threat of violence against Sandra. But the threat to shave her head works. And out is TS3. Interesting stuff. Carver gets out of the hold with a bite. It fits the character. But it might have been better to just have him power out of it. But that’s a small nitpick. I enjoyed it.

Monosso DVD: I already bought two! Not buying more.

RyGunn Promo: So I email Curt, my long suffering tag partner, and say “here’s the promo, Ryan might have rambled a bit.” Curt, who is 19 different kinds of awesome and infinitely patient with my excesses, replies with “might be?” Which just goes to show how great he is. Yes, it’s very long. Ryan defies my every demand that he be concise. Special thanks to Pat for letting me shoehorn Katsumura into Ryan’s backstory. It’s meant to play into things that come later, so hopefully it’ll pay off, despite the massive amounts of verbiage. Curt, as always, nailed Grizz and Justin.

RyGunn vs. Bombers: I’m kind of sad reading this, as I know how it’ll end. But also excited. Bucky yells abuse of power, and I am grinning. Love the boxing match in the beginning. Also, it warms the cockles of my Kenta Kobashi loving heart every time Ryan does the chops. Gunnar refuses to tag in Ryan! That is such a great touch! Great match. And then... RIP RyGunn, *sniff* I’ve really loved teaming with Curt. So much so that we actually kept the team going past the original point we were going to break them up in. But now, with Ryan against the Gaines Clan, I expect to continue to have fun.

The Rave T-Shirts: I’ll buy one!

Matsui and MAMMOTH: I agree with Jer, that was kind of a weird way to cap off the promo.

Supreme Wright: I dig Wright the most! And this promo is one of the reasons why. Terry is doing just great work with him.

Hamilton Graham: He’s kinda cranky! I think I might enjoy seeing Hamilton Graham kick the crap out of a teen idol.

World Title Match: Would have preferred if Supreme won. But I expect that when he eventually does, it’ll be a huge moment. That was a very good match though. Enjoyed it quite a bit. MAMMOTH’s quick pin was a very cool touch. I also like Dufrense’s strategic thinking.

AWA Toys: I would totally buy these.

Unholy Alliance: Marley really is awesome. The entire promo was great, but for me, Marley is really the standout in the group.

“No more heroes” is a great segue into a Carver segment. I liked it. The stips are interesting. Will be curious to see how it plays at Homecoming.

War Games! : Huh, no Immortals promo? That’s a shame.

Blood early on. Always a good sign!

Loving the match thus far. A good, bloody, chaotic mess. Which is what the Match Beyond should be.

Demetrius Lake is here with Percy! That will be interesting. Though, in trying to visualize him, I can’t quite picture a fedora over an afro.

Black mist on Kinsey! The DEADLY Black Mist!

Very good match. I enjoyed it. I tend to think that the faces should always win a War Games. But booker knows best.

Post Match:

Royalty heads down. And... I don’t know. The Unholy Alliance winning suggests that Vasquez and co. are not done with that evil faction. And now they are going to take on two evil factions?

Also, Nenshou gets killed. Is Nenshou gone? I am guessing so, based on what Jer said on JTF. Given that Nenshou won the match for his team, and now he’s being abandoned, booking 101 suggests he’ll be back for vengeance eventually. But that doesn’t quite work, since Nenshou doesn’t speak. I don’t know. That said, it was very well executed.

Ben Waterson is back! That’s pretty cool.

Overall, a very good show. I enjoyed it a lot. Great job!

Ernie Ladd! I love Ernie Ladd.

Also:

He's wearing a brown corduroy suit with a light purple undershirt, and a light brown fedora.

It is a fedora! It says so right there!

I meant in the picture I posted. And yes, I became a big fan of Ladd especially after doing research for this character.

Nenshou speaks! Just not in a language that the AWA Universe as a whole understands.

Fortunately, the AWA has a universal translator!

Maybe Manny Imbragno should run a stable of wrestlers who, for whatever reason, cannot speak on their own?

HG: Predictions?  You want me - a lowly wrestler - to predict the outcome to  the biggest match of the night.  Oh, you can believe that by the way.  They may have stuck WarGames on the marquee and put the promotional dollar behind it but at the end of the day, when the World Heavyweight Title is on the line - THAT’S the Main Event, jack.

MS: Mark.

HG: Couldn’t have said it better myself

Graham gettin' carny with it!

Nenshou should get Miyuki to be his interpreter. It'd result in even worse English than Nenshou would speak.

Oh, gotcha, I misunderstood.

Yes, Ernie Ladd, Bruiser Brody and Dick Murdoch are the three old school guys whose promos I obsessively seek out on youtube.

I am sure Nenshou can speak, but to the best of my knowledge, he hasn't. And whether in Japanese or English, I suspect speaking would remove a good deal of his mystique.

She would do fine, so long as she remembers to inhale before speaking.
