Darryl Valentine purchased Virginia Championship Wrestling before Christmas 1978, quickly transforming the small independent promotion into Mid-Atlantic Wrestling running their first show at the Norfolk Coliseum in Virginia in January 1979. Valentine's first order of business was to increase the quality of the roster and handpicked talent from various promotions across the country. The promotion soon began to grow and in 1983 'Mid-Atlantic Wrestling TV' hit the airwaves and has gradually been syndicated across Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. The television show became a hit and known for its fast paced action, lively crowds and top notch action. Instead of cartoonish characters and interviews, Mid-Atlantic Wrestling focused on energetic matches and characters whose personas blurred the lines between good and evil and and a physical style and episodic format. The biggest draw was in 1988 when they sold out the Hampshire Football Stadium in Marlyand with 20,000 fans watching Bam Bam Briggs and The One-Eyed Gypsy battle it out in a bloody cage match. When Darryl Valentine passed away in 1993, his son Tom took over the reigns and has managed to successful run a regional promotion profitably, giving young talent and opportunity and old stars one last run in the spotlight. The Valentines have never tried to run pay per view or move out of their strong hold, they've tried at times to move south, but seem happy to stay where they are and not take on the bigger leagues. Info Guide Name: Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Established: 1979 Owner: Valentine Family Promoter: Tom Valentine North American Champion: Rip Slater, the blue eyed ace of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling, Rip started at the bottom and made his way to the top during his 10 year career. He's a three time Champion, often courted by the national leagues but no amount of money seems able to lure him away. TV Champion: 'Smooth' Jimbo Parker, cocky wrestler who has managed to rub everyone up the wrong way during his 12 months with the league. Keen to make the step up to North American Champion, but yet to receive a shot at the gold. TV Show: Mid-Atlantic Wrestling TV - Saturday morning studio show presented by Steven Cambalala, usually features squash matches and a main event. Televised championship matches are very rare, most of the stars who appear on the weekly show just cut promos or are involved in angles. |
