Ironically, this sums up a lot of my concerns about watching indy wrestling in Cleveland. Sometimes the fans are more than a wee bit dickish than typical "it's KEWL to root for the heels" here... |
| And here's where I pretend to be a writer... | |

Let's get some feedback and chatter going. I miss the days in PVW when we had some fun feedback and discussion post shows. What did you like? What didn't you like? |

I also blame chats. Plan is to give you guys an in depth review tomorrow as a nod to the fantastic, realistic match-writing especially. Every match is a mark out moment. EDIT: now we can blame the draft and awesome stories from Pedro in "chat." Haha. And my procrastination. Let me just say "this weekend, I will post a review." (Go Cowboys!) |

I can't even hold myself to my own deadlines! Haha. Here's a review though, my bad if formatting is off. ============================ First of all, this Steel City Showdown logo is legit. I love it. Good intro with the lyrics - then a good opening with Colin and Jordan breaking down the lineup for tonight and building up to the card. Then we have our first segment: AUTUMN HART & OWEN MADDOX ------------------------------------------------------------- Owen is pissed that a "damn fine" was the punishment from last week when Marcus O'Neil served up a beatdown on Owen's pops. This promo obviously did a good job of detailing why Owen would be upset with highlights of Sky's The Limit being shown and talked about over something that means more to him than TRW's "Championship Committee". Autumn's trying to sweep it under the rug but Owen wants to drop the "MF" bomb out of frustration and anger! Good job of selling the importance of O'Neil's attack and then finished with a threat sent O'Neil's way. Also a good job of building up suspense, I'm curious to see what Owen does about this because he seems super angry right now. Then a good transition to the Southern Bulldogs' promo after bringing us back up to date on Ace and his career ending injury. SOUTHERN BULLDOGS ----------------------------------------- "and last week the Gamblers ran out of luck and were bulldozed right outta dodge and any bettin’ man will tell ya…ya ain’t gonna see them runnin’ their mouths for a long, long time." WOWzers. Really liked that line. I liked the whole promo, but especially that. This promo does a great job of showing the unity of this team. Sells what the team has done so far and what they plan on continuing to do. Southern Bulldogs nailed it right here. Explained the turn as well. Fire & salt right here. SOUTHERN BULLDOGS VS. FIST CITY ROLLERS ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- After a good promo, the Southern Bulldogs capitalized with a win. Good match-writing in this fed, i'll say it a thousand times. Subtle touches of heel tactics like the Southern Bulldogs taunting Cady were also good, especially when Bobby Moon blows a kiss then misses a knee drop from the top. Heel tactics + it costs the heel a little. Even little touches like that can do a lot to help get heels and faces over. Great back and forth match with a smooth finish. MARCUS O'NEIL VS BRAD BORNE ------------------------------------------------------- The only thing that killed my buzz for this match is seeing "Davenport, Iowa." I immediately translate that to "Cyclones" and "Hawkeyes" and as a Nebraska Cornhuskers fan - I can't get "jiggy wit' it". Another little thing that jumped out to me: "...and flexes his fingers to work out the tape on his knuckles and wrists as he walks to the ring." That makes for a good visual. Might not stick out to everyone but for me, simple stuff like that jumps off the page. BUT ANYWAYS - Brad Borne, the former collegiate wrestler - probably a Hawkeye or Cyclone gets ABSOLUTELY WORKED by Marcus O'Neil. So seeing this Iowan guy get a major beatdown gave me my buzz back. Haha. This match got O'Neil over in a big way. He's dangerous and I like him a lot. BUT THEN - OWEN MADDOX! After a great promo where he's obviously very, very angry with Marcus O'Neil, here he comes to deliver the bad news. But the 350 pound bruiser was ready and full of adrenaline and was wayyyy too much for Maddox at that point. Maddox wanted some more (but did he really?), luckily (or un-luckily) security was there to make sure this match takes place at another time. I dig Marcus O'Neil. "SINNER SAINT" ZANE MCKAY -------------------------------------------------------------- Zane with Mike and this promo furthers a story I don't know much about. That's my fault but as the days go by, I hope to catch up on my TRW reading a little bit. Short and simple but gets the point across. GIDEON FROST THEN CK BERETTA WITH DOC BARNSWORTH ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Gideon Frost promo was pretty good but the last line is what stuck and that's the line you want to stick the most in some cases. Good job with this promo, especially with the finish, I guess my only hang up was switching from CK to your opponent and then back to CK but you had to do it like that for the finish, so it kind of balanced out. That's minor though, it still worked out. I really liked the transition from Gideon to CK being examined by Doctor Barnsworth. Sells the injury, obviously and also the fact that Gideon is in "such a rush" because he wants a piece of Gideon Frost. Good stuff from both guys leading up to the Gideon Frost match. GIDEON FROST VS. JAMES CARSON ------------------------------------------------------------ But wowwwwwwwww - CK Beretta comes out on a bum ankle and threatens Gideon's opponent away THEN goes face to face with Frost who WASTES NO TIME in leg sweeping him! Made me laugh, actually but that's because it was awesome. First it looked like Gideon was just about to destroy him, then he starts talking smack then CK gets a couple of shots in then Gideon has the upper hand again but CK manages to get the crutch away from him and whacks him a few different times then gets an unsanctioned, probably faster than usual 3 count from the fans. This was a great angle with lots of good action. ANDERS N. ---------------------------------- Hahahahaha. Found a piece of gold. "I'm going to punch you in the face then, in front of the 10... 11 people in attendance I'm going to raise you high to the sky and send you crashing down into the mat with my Powerchord Slam! You'll be planted like the flag at Rilo Kiley! And you can take that to your local savings and loan, cap'n!" This was hilarious. I like this guy too. MACE MCKINNON AND ISSAC JACOBS --------------------------------------------------------------- Mace is approached by Issac who is still awaiting Mace's response on Issac being his manager. Mace shoots him down ICE-COLD. Issac basically warns Mace after being rejected but Mace doesn't care, he's succeeded and gotten this far by himself, he doesn't need Issac's help. This was a great segment and written in a way that made me feel the tension between the two. LARRY "JAWS" JOSEPH ---------------------------------------- "It’s a health hazard. [Larry chuckles.] LJJ: Then again, so am I" Ohhhhhhhhh these lines are coming in hot tonight~! Loved that. Larry puts Ander in his place then lets Vinnie Vazquez know that he'll be using Andy as an example and Vinnie should pay close attention. This was a solid promo. I like Larry "Jaws" Joseph too, this was a solid promo. ANDY N VS. LARRY "JAWS" JOSEPH ----------------------------------------------------------- Andy had a lot of momentum in the beginning of this match and started to lose it when DEF Bellows came out to "return the favor" which ultimately ended up costing Andy the match. This was another well-written match which leads to a feud progressing and then when Vinnie Vasquez comes out, it leads to a shouting match between him and Joseph. The thing about TRW is: it's so easy to visualize. As you're reading, it's easy to just picture all of this stuff happening because it's written so well. This match and everything with it was no different. DAMIEN LEGACY ----------------------- Good cut from Legacy as he explains his stance of wanting to _hurt_ Acorn but modeled himself around a younger Mailbu. Difference? Legacy is younger and better. I'm wondering if Legacy's loss of an "edge" will hurt him against Malibu? JOHNNY F'N MALIBU ----------------------------- Excellent play off the Chase promo. This was pretty entertaining. Malibu takes a trip wayyyyy back down memory lane. Some good lines in here but: "JFM: Just like Casie Cassel’s time as the “it” girl who went away to college and gained seventythree pounds... ...has run out." I liked this promo a lot. Great job by Malibu in a creative twist and now I'm really looking forward to what lies ahead. LORD WILLIAM WESLEY WINDSOR ------------------------------------------ I really liked how Wesley blamed Arthur for the loss to Johnny Malibu and the way he did it. This was an excellent promo. MALIBU VS LEGACY --------------------------- Aw, yes, we finally got these two in a match. Hell of a start for Malibu as Legacy was described as being somewhat timid in his approach at first while Malibu preferred to hit him with some vicious shots. Then it turns into a great back and forth. Then the "typical rude Americans" razz WWW and Arthur as they make their way to the ring. The action continues but then Arthur strikes Legacy with the umbrella leading to a DQ! Legacy thinks Malibu is in on it, then pays the price for his assumption before Malibu storms off! Wowwwwwwww... Another fantastic match with a nice twist having Arthur break up an excellent match, Malibu storming off, dis-pleased shows he probably wasn't in on it but I loved the angle. Great job! AMERICAN REVIVAL ---------------------------- Nice face promo here touching on the upcoming match with The Surge as well as speaking on other recent events such as cornering and messing with Jacobs. Two face teams are about to square off and this was a solid promo. FIRST ROUND FOR CELESTIAL RIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP ANNOUNCED --------------------------------------- Autumn Hart announces the first round and with this strong TRW roster, that first round is definitely intriguing. THE SURGE VS AMERICAN REVIVAL ------------------------------------------- Ewwwwwwww-weeeeeee - this was excellent! The meat of this isn't actually the electric match where both teams get great shine (have I mentioned the fantastic match-writing yet?). Between hot tags and some near pin falls, all four members of both teams looked great! Then the Southern Bulldogs cost BOTH teams the match! Wanted to note quick that Ace telling Nick "Got to believe in myself, huh?" (Something to that extent) was a nice touch playing off of The Surge's promo. Southern Bulldogs looked absolutely deadly, taking out both teams and sending a message, loud and clear! This was great stuff all the way around, high quality, action-packed match then an excellent angle to go with it. Now both teams have a gripe with SB and they obviously don't care~! Good job. MACE MCKINNON ------------------------- He lives in the moment and he's ready for that spotlight heading into a match with Shawn Covell, hoping to win and take _his_ title away from Alec Scott! With the McKinnon Express, this live wire is ready for action! AUTUMN HART AND MIKEY B TALK TO FANS ---------------------------------------- I like this idea. Creative approach as Autumn speaks with amped up fans in Cleveland that are ready for the MOG 2 Tour! After speaking with younger, then a couple older fans, she sends it over to Mike who is in DC doing the same thing who decides to play to the crowd and absorb some cheap pops! Haha. Good job, nice idea. SHAWN COVELL ------------------------- The STAR of TRW is ready brah! Nice promo from Covell who lets it be known that it's not HIM that has to beat McKinnon, he's proved that he can "derail" the McKinnon Express once already! Very good cut and it's easy to see the difference between the two personalities of Mace and Covell heading into this one, great promos by both have me ready to see who comes out on top! SHAWN COVELL VS MCKINNON ----------------------------------------- The champ, Alec Scott is out to guest commentate as The Star and McKinnon do battle! Covell wrestles like a savage in this match, trying to do as much damage to McKinnon as possible, by any means necessary! McKinnon shows off his big time strength in this match-up and near pin falls from both competitors surely kept the fans on their toes! But in the end, Mace was just too much! I liked this whole match a lot and then Mace jumping up from a piledriver into a pose and then Alec getting out of the ring only to have Mace collapse! Wowwwww...!! So the Main Event at MOG 2 is set! Mace McKinnon Vs Alec Scott for the Iron City Championship! In closing... This was an excellent card! I do need to catch up on some things but a great job was done through promos and commentating to bring even first time readers up to date for the most part. Collectively, this fed has a great feel, it's realistic and easy to put yourself "into the moment." Everybody works hard and the layout of the card was nearly perfect with placement of segments leading into matches and the commentating was top notch to go with some great match writing! Can't say enough about the quality of the match-writing, especially (even though I tried to)! Good job guys and hopefully I didn't make too many mistakes or skip anybody in this review. ;). Excellent card from top to bottom. |
