Your Complete Guide to Summer Programming By Greg David -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ‘Canadian Idol,’ ‘So You Think You Can Dance,’ ‘On the Lot,’ ‘Instant Star’ and ‘The Shield’ topline a summer full of new and returning hits B-I-N-G-O... Friday, May 18 National Bingo Night 9 p.m. ET, ABC An original idea, or a blatant rip-off of Deal or No Deal? Well, Bingo has a bald host in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s Ed Sanders, and it has incredibly excited contestants. Instead of lovely ladies with briefcases, however, Bingo boasts a huge sphere full of oversized bingo balls and a bevy of beauties who extract them from the sphere. Tuesday, May 22 On the Lot 9 p.m. ET, CTV [This is a sneak-peek episode. Regular time-slot debut is Monday, June 4 at 8 p.m.] Three Canadians – all from the West Coast – are among the 50 finalists whose short films have a shot at winning them a $1 million US film contract with DreamWorks and a meeting with Steven Spielberg. The Best Years 10 p.m. ET, Global A poor orphan goes to college, where she comes into her own as a young woman.Think an updated Felicity. [Look for Melissa Hank's feature on The Best Years on May 22.] Thursday, May 24 So You Think You Can Dance? 8 p.m. ET, CTV/Fox Those skilled in such street dances as hip-hop, krumping and popping (I have no idea what these are) have just as much of a chance of winning as those schooled in jive, quick-step and salsa. The best dancer in the U.S. is crowned at the end of it all. These 'Ex-Wives' have something to say Sunday, May 27 Instant Star 7:30 p.m. ET, CTV Part 2 of the second season resumes, as singing sensation Jude (Alexz Johnson) prepares for the release of her second album while dealing with drama on the home front. Monday, May 28 The Ex-Wives Club 9 p.m. ET, ABC What do hosts Angie Everhart, Shar Jackson and Marla Maples all have in common? They’re all famous ex-wives of, respectively, Ashley Hamilton, Kevin Federline and Donald Trump. Now the trio work with regular folk who have gone through divorces, and help them build the self-esteem they need to move on with their lives. Think Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, but without the house. Or Ty Pennington. Wednesday, May 30 The Next Best Thing: Who is the Greatest Celebrity Impersonator? 8 p.m. ET, ABC I’m assuming Rich Little isn’t allowed to compete. Or Andre-Philippe Gagnon. Comedians Jeffrey Ross, Lisa Ann Walter and Elon Gold judge celebrity impersonators before the American viewing public decides who the best is, awarding them with $100,000. Hidden Palms 9 p.m. ET, Citytv/CW A young guy who watched his father commit suicide attempts a life readjustment courtesy of his mom and her new hubby in Palm Springs, where the sun shines all the time, and the girls are really cute. The first episode is surprisingly good – here’s hoping the trend continues. Thursday, May 31 Pirate Master 8 p.m. ET, CTV/Fox ARRR! Sixteen “modern day” pirates ride around the Caribbean isle of Dominica in search of buried treasure. Each week, the participants will put together clues to lead them closer to the booty – $500,000 US – while their numbers dwindle. Travis hunts for a chief designer From the Ground Up with Debbie Travis 9 p.m. ET/PT, Global Debbie’s back with a whole new crew, and a new goal as well. Travis is launching “Debbie Travis Condos & Homes,” and is looking for a chief designer to help her. Who’s got what it takes to be Travis’s right-hand man or woman? Saturday, June 2 Thank God You’re Here! 9 p.m. ET, CTV The improv sketch show airing on ABC debuts on CTV tonight. Sunday, June 3 The Nature of Things with David Suzuki 7 p.m. ET, CBC Everyone’s favourite eco-warrior returns as The Nature of Things enters Season 48. The first episode, “Tarantula,” spotlights the fuzzy arachnids. Monday, June 4 Hell’s Kitchen 9 p.m. ET, Citytv/Fox Gordon Ramsay returns to make 12 wannabe pro chefs cry on the way to awarding them head chef duties at the Green Valley Ranch Resort, Spa and Casino in Las Vegas. Look for our weekly coverage of Kitchen to start after tonight’s debut episode! 'Canadian Idol' blasts off Tuesday, June 5 Canadian Idol 8:30 p.m. ET, CTV CTV says the talent skewed a little older this year, and half of the people trying out played instruments – a new wrinkle this season. Sharon Osbourne takes the place of Brandy, who is involved in a court case stemming from a car accident she had in the off-season. The Shield 10 p.m. ET/PT, CH Vic Mackey is back! Sunday, June 10 The Loop 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, CH This Fox sitcom, about a guy and his friends living and working in Chicago, bows on CH this summer. John from Cincinnati 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT, The Movie Network/Movie Central David Milch gave up on Season 3 of Deadwood to create this drama – so it better be good. It’s a 10-parter about the Yost family, who are social misfits. Doesn’t sound very promising.
