Eva Longoria, Emmy presenter? Is Entourage headed to Genoa City? Is Tom Pelphrey returning to ‘GL’? ‘Passions’ announces DirecTV cast!

Eva Longoria may be honouring her soap roots at the Daytime Emmys!

Daytime Emmy special — Emmy presenters revealed; Rosie O’Donnell skips ceremony
On the heels of ABC announcing that Grey’s Anatomy star Chandra Wilson will host SoapNet’s red-carpet Emmy coverage, rumours that Desperate Housewives’ Eva Longoria (ex-Isabella, Y&R) has agreed to present Y&R’s best drama series clip package on the live June 15 CBS telecast have been circulating in the industry. A spokesperson for CBS tells TV Guide she hadn’t heard anything on the Longoria front, but did reveal that Rachael Ray, Tyra Banks, Ellen DeGeneres, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Joy Behar and Mario Lopez will be presenting at the ceremony. The View’s Rosie O’Donnell (nominated as best talk show host along with Barbara Walters, Joy Behar, and Elisabeth Hasselbeck) reported on her talk show that she can not attend because of family obligations.

All My Children (A-Channel/ABC) — New headwriters announced; star ties the knot!
The struggling ABC sudser has finally secured a new headwriting team: former Dynasty, Guiding Light and Port Charles scribes Barbara J. Esensten and James Harmon Brown will be penning life in Pine Valley beginning immediately. The news comes as somewhat of a shock because industry pundits believed former Y&R writers Jack Smith or Kay Alden, who have a development deal with ABC, would be hired. In real-life news, congratulations go out to Jacob Young (JR), who wed Christen Steward on May 13.

As the World Turns (CH/CBS) — New hunk alert!
Best wishes go out to Jon and Kelley Menighan Hensley (Holden and Emily), who just found out they are having a baby girl in July. Hot newcomer Jake Silberman’s first airdate as Luke’s love interest, Noah, is June 1. Meanwhile, Jack and Katie have sex this week, much to Carly’s chagrin.

The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV/CBS) — Ashley and Rick have sex!
Finally, the love scene we’ve all been waiting for: Rick and Ashley give in to their carnal desires while flying to Mexico this week! Now that Phoebe and Rick have broken up, this burgeoning supercouple literally takes off.

Coronation Street (CBC) – Kidnap plot scrapped!
Coronation Street producers have wisely decided to scrap an upcoming storyline involving a kidnapped baby because of similarities with the real-life abduction of Madeleine McCann.

Days of Our Lives (Global/NBC) — Sami’s hero
Is Days finally redeeming EJ Wells? It sure looks like it this week, when EJ warns his father, Stefano, to leave Sami alone (the evil DiMera patriarch needs her unborn baby’s stem cells to save his life). Unfortunately, Bart kidnaps Sami and tries to kill her by pumping fumes in her car, but EJ saves the day – which will no doubt annoy Lucas to no end.

Rick Hearst (Ric, 'GH') recovers from throat surgery

General Hospital (CTV/ABC) — Star recast; Clifton to recur
While Emmy winner Rick Hearst recovers from throat surgery, GH is temporarily recasting Ric with former Sunset Beach hunk, Nick Kiriazis (ex-Antonio) on June 14. Although Scott Clifton decided not to renew his contract as Dillon, ABC reports that the actor will recur throughout the summer when story dictates.

Guiding Light (CH/CBS) — Is Jonathan Springfield-bound?
According to Soap Opera Digest, GL is trying to woo back Emmy winner Tom Pelphrey (ex-Jonathan), who left the soap this past February. Also, Emmy winner Darnell Williams (ex-Jesse, AMC) has been cast in the short-term role of Griggs, a man from Mallet’s past. He first airs May 30.

One Life to Live (A-Channel/ABC) – Old faves to return?
Soap Opera Weekly is reporting that OLTL is scripting a secret storyline to coincide with the soap’s 10,000th episode and is trying to lure James DePaiva (ex-Max), 2007 Emmy nominee Dan Gauthier (ex-Kevin), and Tonya Walker (ex-Alex) back to the canvas.

Passions (Global/NBC) – DirecTV cast announced!
As Passions prepares itself to traverse from NBC to DirecTV, the soap has announced which actors have signed new contracts to stay on in Harmony. More are expected to re-sign, but for now, actors who are confirmed are Eric Martsolf (Ethan), Ben Masters (Julian), Kim Johnston Ulrich (Ivy), Dylan Fergus (Noah), Galen Gering (Luis), Emily Harper (Fancy), Lindsay Hartley (Theresa), Liza Huber (Gwen), James Hyde (Sam), Juliet Mills (Tabitha), Heidi Mueller (Kay), Tracey Ross (Eve), Eva Tamargo (Pilar) and McKenzie Westmore (Sheridan).

The Young and the Restless (Global/CBS) — Johnny Drama on a daytime drama?
An interesting piece of gossip surfaced in the new issue of Soaps in Depth this week: rumours suggest that HBO’s Entourage may film scenes on the Y&R soundstage. A spokesperson for the show issued a “no comment” when TV Guide called. Hmmm … did Drama (Kevin Dillon) join a daytime series?

Susan Flannery of 'B&B'

MASTER CLASS: THE BEST OF THE BEST
Susan Flannery and Katherine Kelly Lang, The Bold and the Beautiful
Wowza — just when we were beginning to lose interest in B&B, the soap gave us a delicious serving of Stephanie and Brooke doing battle yet again. Next to the Rosie O’Donnell and Elizabeth Hasselbeck smackdowns on The View, there is nothing better on daytime television than watching Susan Flannery (Stephanie) and Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke) getting their hate on for each other. No one on daytime has chemistry like Flannery and Lang; heck, we’d be content watching Brooke and Stephanie sleep all day. Memo to B&B: we want more.

SEMI-RANT OF THE WEEK: Where is Lesli Kay (Felicia)?
Speaking of B&B … while reviewing the Daytime Emmy reels recently, we were blown away by Lesli Kay’s transcendent performance as Felicia battled cancer. It reminded us what a dynamic thespian Kay is, prompting us to ask aloud: Is B&B smoking crack for allowing her to simmer on the backburner for the past six months?

Finola Hughes 'GH' bound! 'Days' star undergoes surgery! 'OLTL' star marries former co-star; plus why did Dustin Hoffman visit the set?

Justin Bruening and Alexis Havens

All My Children (A-Channel/ABC) — Babe and Jamie Redux
As previously reported, rumour has it real-life husband and wife Justin Breuning (Jamie) and Alexis Havens (Babe) are expected to leave the soap later this year, so it makes sense that this week the show is re-teaming up this former romantic pair. We’re still not sure why AMC dropped Babe and Jamie’s sweet and touching love story a few years back in favour of the dysfunctional and contrived mess that is JR and Babe. Meanwhile, John James has been taken off contract, but will still recur as Jeff Martin.

As The World Turns (CH/CBS) — Craig proposes to Meg!
Life in Oakdale gets nuttier this week: Gwen has it out with Cleo after learning she’s lip-synching, Jack finds Carly drunk and passed out, Katie refuses to forgive and forget, while Meg says yes to Craig’s proposal.

The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV/CBS) — Musical embryos?
Just as we predicted, it looks like the hospital may have accidentally given Taylor Brooke’s embryo, much to everyone’s shock and horror! Could Taylor actually be carrying Nick and Brooke’s child? We’d much prefer if Bridget purposely inserted her own embryo into Taylor so she and Nick could have the child they so desperately tried to have.

Coronation Street (CBC) – Star fired!
It’s a good thing Grey’s Anatomy star Isaiah Washington isn’t on Corrie Street — after being suspended from the show for making inappropriate comments and revealing story information to fans, Bruce Jones has announced that he is leaving the soap after playing Les Battersby for 10 years. Jones’ departure will coincide with Wendi Peters’ (Cilla) exit.

Days of our Lives (Global/NBC) — Abe leaves Salem
In real-life medical news: James Reynolds (Abe) underwent heart valve replacement surgery on May 24 and will be off the show for six weeks to recover. Here’s to a speedy recovery, James!

Finola Hughes pops by 'GH'

General Hospital (CTV/ABC) — Robin and Patrick’s worst nightmare?
Emmy winner Finola Hughes (Anna) returns to the soap to play out the annual Scorpio soap summer adventure. According to the GH scribes, Anna may find a love interest in Noah (Rick Springfield is back full time as well). If all works out, GH also plans to include Tristan Rogers (Robert) into this love equation.

Guiding Light (CH/CBS) — Brangelina who?
How many long-lost children are out there in soap opera land? Harley and Gus are quickly becoming the Brangelina of daytime with their ever-expanding brood. This week, Gus learns that Rafe is his son after aiming a gun at the juvenile delinquent before Harley finally spills the truth.

One Life To Live (A-Channel/ABC) — Dustin Hoffman alert!
After years of denying they were a couple, Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio) and Rescue Me’s Sherri Saum (ex-Keri, OLTL) wed in New York City on May 19. In weirder news, Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman popped by the ABC set on May 24 to preview the June 15 musical episode taping. Hmmm…

Passions (Global/NBC) – Starlet fired!
The first one bites the dust: Silvana Arias (Paloma) has not been invited to make the move when Passions traverses from NBC to DirecTV in September.

The Young and the Restless (Global/CBS) — Victoria’s preggers; Cassie’s back!
Moments after Brad tells Victoria he wants a divorce, life throws the Newman heroine another curveball — she’s pregnant! Too bad she’s not sure who’s the daddy: Brad or JT? Meanwhile, Emmy winner Camryn Grimes returns on June 14 when Cassie makes another ghostly visit.

Great Scott!

MASTER CLASS: THE BEST OF THE BEST
Melody Thomas Scott, The Young and the Restless
Ever since John Enos (ex-Bobby) was fired, Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) has been criminally languishing on the back burner. That is, until now. Y&R head writer Lynn Marie Latham’s best move to date has been positioning Scott front and centre. As Nikki rivals Jack for a seat in the senate in a heated campaign, she’s also dealing with her son’s Nicholas’ death, her husband Victor’s abandonment, and her daughter Victoria’s failed marriage. With this embarrassment of story riches, Scott has blossomed before our eyes, making Nikki one of our favourite characters once again. Although no one can compete with Scott and Enos’ intoxicating chemistry (not even Eric Braeden), newcomer Vincent Irrizary (David) is impressively holding his own alongside the Newman matriarch, who has never been sexier. Our interest is piqued, and wonder if we’re about to witness the birth of a new super couple on the show. Welcome back, Melody!

RANT OF THE WEEK: Act much?
Yikes! Has anyone over at B&B ever thought of suggesting an acting class for its newest star, Constantine Maroulis (Constantine)? We know he’s playing a fictional version of himself, but whenever this hair model is onscreen the entire show comes to an awkward halt.

TOP 5 SHOWS TO WATCH

Nick’s alive on ‘Y&R’ — with a new love interest! ‘AMC’ star gives birth! ‘Passions’ hunk quits! Upheaval at ‘OLTL’! ‘Days’ scribe on ratings drop: “Not my fault!”

Sydney Penny (Julia, 'AMC') is having a lot of sleepless nights thanks to baby!

All My Children (A-Channel/ABC) — Baby news!
Congratulations go out to Sydney Penny (Julia), who along with her husband, Rob, welcomed their first child, Chasen August Powers, on May 31. On June 14, a special dream episode of AMC airs, in which several characters live out fantasies — and nightmares!

As the World Turns (CH/CBS) — Homophobe alert?
Daniel Hugh Kelly is joining the soap as Noah’s father, who will potentially have issues with his son’s romance with Luke. Kelly was last seen on OLTL as the judge presiding over Spencer Truman’s murder trial and is most remembered for his work as AMC’s Travis Montgomery and Frank Ryan on Ryan’s Hope.

The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV/CBS) — Law and disorder
Don’t miss Tuesday’s show, when Y&R’s Lauralee Bell brings legal eagle Christine Blair to Los Angeles to help Ridge pull an OJ Simpson, beating his murder rap. Also this week: Constantine makes over Phoebe; Bridget is in danger; and Brooke freaks out after seeing Rick with a gun (please, Rick, put Constantine out of his misery!).

Coronation Street (CBC) – Ottawa’s loss is our gain!
Soap fans, rejoice: the Stanley Playoffs are finished, and Corrie Street returns weeknights June 12 at 7 p.m. on CBC!

Days of our Lives (Global/NBC) — Hogan Sheffer apologizes
We knew it. Executive producer Ken Corday freely blamed Emmy-winning headwriter Hogan Sheffer for the decline of Days. However, the scribe confesses in this week’s Soap Opera Digest that he was told he couldn’t use the soap’s most popular stars because of budget issues, which explains his over-reliance on new characters instead of veterans. Don’t miss Thursday’s show, when Lexie returns to Salem — hurray!

Jason (Steve Burton, 'GH') can't forgive Sam!

General Hospital (CTV/ABC) — Jason’s worst nightmare!
All hell breaks loose in Port Charles when Jason learns Sam knew all along that Jake was his son. Making matters worse? Jake is kidnapped — and all fingers point to Sam!

Guiding Light (CH/CBS) — Father Josh Lewis?
Josh as a minister? Yikes. What are GL writers smoking, and can we have some? This week, Cassie wonders if her past as a stripper will hurt Josh’s new profession, while Reva tries to hide the fact that she kidnapped Lizzie. Also, look for Gus to celebrate his first Father’s Day with Rafe.

One Life to Live (A-Channel/ABC) — Actors fired; new headwriter named
Staff writer and longtime OLTL fan Ron Carlivati has been promoted to head writer, replacing Dena Higley (with whom he worked as co-head writer) effective immediately. And he’s not wasting any time cleaning house, firing actors who haven’t clicked with fans and critics — Chris Beetem (Tate), Randolph Mantooth (Kirk) and Alexandra Neil (Paige). Meanwhile, Paul Satterfield returns to film new flashbacks as Spencer Truman. Also of note, we’re told not to miss any of the David Vickers’ storyline this summer or else we’ll regret it.

Passions (Global/NBC) – Hunk quits
Oh-so-sexy Adrian Bellani (Miguel) announced on his website that he will not be renewing his contract with the soap when it moves from NBC to DirecTV in September. The hunk is hoping to pursue his luck in prime-time TV and films. Hopefully, he’ll enjoy long-lasting success in Hollywood, unlike his predecessor Jesse Metcalfe.

Nick (Joshua Morrow, 'Y&R') is alive and kicking with a hot new woman!

The Young and the Restless (Global/CBS) — Nick’s alive!
The biggest shocker this week isn’t the fact that presumed-dead Nick Newman (who is sporting a sexy beard) is alive, but that he’s found by a woman named Logan (played by newcomer Deanna Russo), who nurses him back to health! This can’t be good news for wife Phyllis and former spouse Sharon. Either way, welcome back Josh Morrow — we’ve missed you and your sexy pecs! Congrats go out to Eric Braeden (Victor), who will receive a star on Hollywood’s walk of Fame on July 20.

MASTER CLASS: THE BEST OF THE BEST
Maura West, As the World Turns
We’re rooting for ATWT’s Maura West to take home the gold as best actress at this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards. Before she left the soap for maternity leave, West was blessed with a fantastic storyline that saw Jack and Carly painfully breaking ties, which has led to Carly Munson’s unraveling. Now back from a life of adventure with Simon, Carly wants her man, Jack, back and for the first time in years – Carly’s a vixen again. Whenever West is on screen, especially when Carly is desperate, she sparkles the same way Beverlee McKinsey did as Another World’s Iris and Guiding Light’s Alexandria. We can’t take our eyes off of her, and neither should her younger co-stars. Take note West wannabes — you’re watching a professional, seasoned actress, so soak it up. Plus, has West ever looked sexier or more beautiful since she gave birth?

RANT OF THE WEEK: The polarized Light
All we want, other than world peace and Rosie O’Donnell back on The View, is for GL to be consistent. It’s the most frustrating soap on air: it’s either brilliant or god-awful. Heck, we don’t care if it’s bad — as long as it’s consistently bad or vice versa. We’re beginning to think the writers are bipolar, so we’re sending them a prescription – stat! – because they’re making us feel insane.

TOP 5 SHOWS TO WATCH

TOP 5 ACTORS TO WATCH

By Nelson Branco

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Major comeback alert: Nathan Fillion returns to ‘OLTL’ and he’s not alone! Is Drake Hogestyn leaving ‘Days’? Victor catches Nikki kissing David on ‘Y&R’!

Jason Cook of 'ATWT'

All My Children (A-Channel/ABC) — Two actors out!
If you’re a fan of Terri Ivens — and we’re not! — tune in on June 20 when the actress returns as what we can only assume is Simon’s ghost, who appears opposite Kendall and Greenlee. Leaving Pine Valley is Susan Pratt (Barbara), as well as Taylor Gildersleeve (Sydney). Good riddance!

As the World Turns (CH/CBS) — As the Web turns
Click on to www.cbs.com/innertube for the second season of ATWT’s online series In Turn, which debuted on June 15. Nine newbies compete for a 13-week contract on the soap; viewers will choose the winner. Various ATWT actors will rotate as judges. Also, according to Soap Opera Weekly, there is no truth to the rumour that Jason Cook is joining former Days co-star Austin Peck (Brad) on the soap.

The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV/CBS) — Kay Alden hired!
After nothing materialized from her six-month contract with ABC, former Y&R scribe Kay Alden is moving to B&B to “help” pen the series. We would have preferred Bradley Bell hire Jack Smith, but hey, no one asked us! Bygones.

Coronation Street (CBC) – Tracy Barlow is back … well, sort of
One of soaps’ all-time best bitches, Kate Ford (ex-Tracy), is back on TV starring on her own series, ITV’s Blue Murder. It will be a Corrie reunion of sorts as Richard Fleeshman (ex-Craig) and Jill Halfpenny (ex-Rebecca), who played mom and son on CS, are also on board.

Is Drake Hogestyn on his way out on 'Days'?

Days of our Lives (Global/NBC) — Is Drake leaving?
Well, nothing lasts forever, dumb-dumbs! Drake Hogestyn (John) shocked fans when he announced at his fan gathering on June 2 that, “I’ve got six months left on my contract, and at some point, everybody is going to leave the show.” Hogestyn then recalled a conversation NBC Universal President Jeff Zucker had with the cast, revealing that the soap may not air on the network past 2009. In happier news, Emmy winner Leann Hunley finally returns to Salem in June as Anna DiMera after 21 years!

General Hospital (CTV/ABC) — Star lands prime-time job!
Eddie Matos will be leaving his role as Professor Pete because the actor was added to the cast of CBS’s Jimmy Smits prime-time soap opera Cane. I wonder if anyone will even notice he’s gone.

Guiding Light (CH/CBS) — Will Josh dump Cassie?
More proof GL isn’t The Dinah and Mallet Show: On Friday, Cassie’s new confidence worries Josh; and the following week, Rafe changes Daisy’s life forever.

Nathan Fillion of 'OLTL'

One Life to Live (A-Channel/ABC) — Confirmed: Fillion returns OLTL! Plus, Asa dies!
We have good news and bad news for you Llanview fans this week. Unfortunately, OLTL has decided to kill off fan-favourite Asa Buchanan, since his portrayer Phil Carey left the show after a contract dispute. However, the soap has announced that it has lined up Nathan Fillion (Joey), James DePaiva (Max), John Loprieno (Cord), Dan Gauthier (Kevin) and Tonya Walker (Alex) for a 10,000th episode celebration airing mid-August. Wondering if both news items are related? Bet on it.

Passions (Global/NBC) – Another hunk quits!
Emmy nominee James Stevenson (Jared) will not renew his contract with the supernatural soap when it moves from NBC to DirecTV this September.

The Young and the Restless (Global/CBS) — Nikki is caught kissing David!
Congrats go out to newlyweds Amelia Heinle (Victoria) and Thad Lunkinbill (J.T.), who are expecting their first child. Heinle’s pregnancy has been written into her storyline, as we reported last week. Sharon Case wed longtime boyfriend Sandy Corzine in a small ceremony in Mexico. On-screen, Phyllis and Sharon team up to bring down Nikki; the rivals tape Nikki exchanging spit with David, which Victor ends up seeing on the Internet. D’oh!

RANT OF THE WEEK: TheEnvelope.com who?
At the Daytime Emmy Awards, TV Guide was shocked and slightly repulsed over the fact that most of the Emmy-nominated P&G actors had absolutely no clue what The Los Angeles Times’ respected award show site theenvelope.com was! Soap actors constantly complain that they are never written about by the mainstream press, yet when they are, they either pretend not to care, or are clearly too lazy to set up a Google alert system on their email. Aren’t their capable publicists forwarding positive press to their actors?

Superstars like Sarah Jessica Parker and George Clooney are all fans of theenvelope.com, and have credited the award show site for helping them either pick their reels or foster their award show campaigns. Our message to the P&G actors: smarten up, especially considering we passionately boasted about your reels and talents as if we were on your publicity team!

Susan Flannery out on ‘B&B’! ‘Days’ star nude! Nikki beds David on ‘Y&R’! Noah exposed on ‘ATWT’! Phil Carey: Llanview-bound?

Susan Flannery (Stephanie) is taking a leave on 'B&B' – but she'll be back to terrorize Brooke soon

All My Children (A-Channel/ABC) — I got you, nuBabe!
It was the worst secret kept in daytime: AMC has finally confirmed that Alexa Havens will leave the show on Oct. 8, the same day GH: Night Shift’s Amanda Baker (ex-Jolene) takes over her Emmy-nominated part in the middle of a hug with Bobbie Eakes (Krystal).

As the World Turns (CH/CBS) — Noah: Beard-less
If you can stomach watching ATWT all week, it will be worth it: Maddie finds out Noah is gay thanks to her brother Henry’s wise observations. Who does Maddie run to first? The “beard” visits Luke to scold him before confronting Noah. Then Maddie runs to see Katie Holmes for advice.

The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV/CBS) — Medical leave or creative out?
TV Guide wouldn’t be surprised if Susan Flannery’s medical/vacation leave was actually a response to the crap B&B is dishing out these days! We’d be willing to spend a night in jail with Lindsay Lohan to find out what Flannery really thinks about Stephanie “raping” Brooke! The Emmy winner will be leaving the series temporarily on Sept. 11, just as the Forresters learn about her part in Brooke’s rape.

Coronation Street (CBC) – Chesney inks huge deal!
Sam Aston (young Chesney) is one rich kid: he’s inked a six-month contract for £30,000 to stay on the hit series. The 13-year-old actor, who debuted in 2003, won the best dramatic performance for a young actor or young actress honour at the 2005 Soap Awards.

James Scott (EJ, ‘Days’) was caught nude on a beach! Why weren't we there?

Days of our Lives (Global/NBC) — James Scott: daytime’s Brad Pitt
Thank you Soap Opera Digest for printing one of the sexiest pics we’ve seen of a soap star: James Scott (EJ) nude on a Florida beach. If you haven’t seen it, run out and buy the issue now! Scott was vacationing in Florida with his gal pal when they frolicked around a nature reserve nude. When a cop spied them, Scott’s girlfriend was given a ticket, but Scott was given a stiff warning. Memo to Scott: next time you vacation, make sure you call us! Isn’t Scott easily the most beautiful and sexiest man on daytime? Le sigh.

General Hospital (CTV/ABC) — Love alert!
Real-life couple alert: Sebastian Roche (Jerry) and Annie Wersching (Amelia), who just scored a role on 24 this season, are doing the dirty, according to Soap Opera Weekly. Mob boss Anthony Zacchara has finally been cast — and the role belongs to Hill Street Blues’ Bruce Weitz, who first airs Oct. 12.

Guiding Light (CH/CBS) — Star weds!
The criminally underused Lawrence Saint-Victor (Remy) wed longtime gal pal Shay Flake on Sept 1. Here’s hoping Shay takes her hubby’s last name. That’s John Behlmann playing Jack Summers, a man from Ashlee’s past, on Sept 14 and 17. Ashlee has a past?

One Life to Live (A-Channel/ABC) — Phil Carey back?
According to Soap Opera Weekly, Phil Carey may be returning to OLTL to film an important flashback scene that will affect the show’s future. Wouldn’t it be great to see Asa one last time literally “reading” his crazy family? Just when we were starting to like Thomas Christian Justusson as Jack, the soap replaced the kid with Carmen LoPorto, who first airs on Sept. 28. In other news, we dreamed OLTL fired Melissa Archer (Natalie) and offered Catherine Hickland (Lindsay) a lifetime contract.

Passions (DirecTV) – Real-life arrest!
Chris Maleki (Spike) was cited by police after the actor was caught urinating in public in downtown Los Angeles — and why aren’t we surprised?

Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) has sex with David, much to Victor's chagrin, on 'Y&R'!

The Young and the Restless (Global/CBS) — Update: Y&R still stinks
Omigod — it’s the best week ever on Y&R! Well, not really, but we’re trying: Nikki has sex with David (gross!), Jack is exposed (yawn), and Amber finds the cash (insert white noise here).

MASTER CLASS: THE BEST OF THE BEST
The entire cast and crew of One Life to Live
Even if One Life to Live manages to spiral out of control and becomes the worst soap from now until the end of the year, we’re still giving the ABC stunner the honour of best dramatic series in our year-end round-up.

The excellence that executive producer Frank Valentini (seriously — what took you so long?) and headwriter Ron Carlivati (seriously — a rival didn’t try to steal you?) have produced in just a handful of weeks is the kind of magic that only comes around daytime every so few years, and would be impossible for another series to mimic this late in the game.

But don’t fret: the odds of OLTL becoming the worst soap are impossible, because The Young and the Restless has a monopoly in that department. Below are a few random things we want to boast about regarding what’s been a sensational week on OLTL.

*How great is it that OLTL skyrocketed to No. 3 in the ratings during its recent milestone? In its heyday, OLTL consistently ranked No. 3.

*Is that chemistry we detect between Jerry ver Dorn (Clint) and Hillary B. Smith (Nora)?

*We were in soap heaven when Dorian visited Lindsay in jail to thank the woman of the year for killing Spencer, and proclaim eternal friendship and allegiance. Robin Strasser and Catherine Hickland have oodles of unexplored chemistry — and the true crime would be to not showcase these two kindred outcasts on a daily basis. And if we haven’t said it enough, Catherine Hickland is simply the best thing on soaps right now. Seriously — even Kim Zimmer (Reva, GL) hasn’t gone to the dark places Hickland has recently. Hickland’s the star of the show — make no mistake about it, ABC!

*Have you noticed that Carlivati is re-classifying which characters are outcasts, socially acceptable, economically viable or irrelevant? He’s returning OLTL back to its realistic roots — smart move!

*Where did OLTL find Cameron Mathison look-alike John Brothertown (Jared)? This sexy rascal hasn’t broken character once, and is one fine actor. We can’t keep our eyes off the promising hunk, and we’re dying to find out what Jared’s agenda is. And, we’re hoping it involves taking his shirt off — a lot!

*After a rough start, we’re staring to like nuSarah — and see sparks between Tina Roberts’ daughter and Cristian!

*The fight for baby Tommy: best storyline of 2007, hands down! We can’t wait to see how this explosive story plays itself out and are eager to welcome back Timothy Adams (Ron) and Jason Shane Scott (Will) to help kick-start this explosive tale.

RANT OF THE WEEK: Recast Marty Saybrooke and Natalie Buchanan!
If there’s any problem on OLTL, it’s the casting. Christina Chambers (Marty) is simply embarrassing to watch and has no business being on TV. Everyone knows how we feel about that hair model Melissa Archer (Natalie). How she cashes that ABC paycheque with a straight face is beyond us. Didn’t Emmy winner Susan Haskell (ex-Marty) give birth already? As for Natalie, my dead grandmother would be an amazing recast, if OLTL’s desperate.

‘GH’ stars arrested for DUI! James Scott blasts EJ/Sami’s ‘Days’ rape! ‘Passions’ and ‘I Wanna be a Soap Star’ in Canada!

Nick (Jack Wagner) finally learns that Taylor could be carrying Brooke's baby on 'B&B'!

All My Children (A-Channel/ABC) — Hannah returns!
We’re still on the fence concerning nuPine Valley — it’s kind of boring and dreary, n’est pas? Let’s see if this week is much better: Hannah (who?) returns – is she preggers from her “magical” night with Zach (insert puke noise here)?; someone stalks Ryan and Annie (scandalous!); Aidan and Greenlee grow closer (shocking!); and Erica surprises Kendall (what else is new?). Putting all your eggs in one basket with one boring deaf storyline doesn’t make a show sparkle, people — it’s a soap, not a PSA! But having said that, we’re giving the new headwriters a chance, but time’s a-wasting!

As the World Turns (CH/CBS) — Winston’s a homophobe … and a killer!
This isn’t such a bad plot twist, actually: Dusty and Lily learn that Cheri had a child with Noah’s homophobic dad, Winston. When Dusty puts two and two together, he realizes Winston killed Cheri! However, Winston is onto Dusty — and drugs and kidnaps him (surprise!). Also, this week in the lazy writing department: Carly learns she’s dying as Jack and Katie prepare to walk down the aisle. You’d think ATWT scribes would have learned their lesson after having Carly sink in quicksand last month! But no!

The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV/CBS) — Bridget tells Nick the truth!
Poor Bridget — she can never win! This week, Nick asks his ex-wife (a.k.a. the natural-born loser) to be the godmother of his and Taylor’s unborn baby. This eventually leads Bridget to reveal the truth that Brooke may be the biological mother thanks to a mistake at the hospital! A freaked-out Nick decides to keep mum, no pun intended, after Bridget convinces him to wait until the baby is born, so they can test its DNA to find out who the mommy really is!

Coronation Street (CBC) – Former Corrie star in Toronto!
Whatever happened to Tommy Harris? You know, the Coronation Street mechanic who got bludgeoned over the head by his daughter Katy? (True Corrie fans will carry the image of the gruesome scene and its sublimely over-acted aftermath to our graves!) Tommy, a.k.a. actor Thomas Craig, materialized in Toronto this weekend at a party hosted by über-director Norman Jewison during the Toronto Film Festival.

Far more jovial and even-tempered than his Corrie alter-ego, Craig told our friends at Hello! Canada magazine that he’s been in the country filming a TV series, Murdoch Mysteries, with hot Canadian actor Yannick Bisson. He plays a detective. But more important, was he disappointed when he got the axe – so to speak – from Corrie in 2005?

On the contrary, says the Sheffield-born 44-year-old former plumber. "I had a six-month contract and I ended up staying on the Street for two-and-a-half years!" Corrie trivia: young actor Sam Robertson, 21, who plays Mike Baldwin's hunky yet irksome Scottish son Adam on the show, is Tom's nephew in real life! — Alison Eastwood

Days of our Lives (Global/NBC) — James Scott: Rape was a mistake!
Soap Opera Weekly has a great interview with James Scott (EJ), in which he reveals that headwriter Hogan Sheffer conceived the character with the former AMC actor in mind thanks to his work as Ethan Cambias! Also, Scott expresses his concern and disgust over the Sami/EJ rape.

“The rape was a step too far. You don’t tackle issues like rape, murder, and various different crimes in a way that betrays the issue. You’re only diluting your own story, program and content if you don’t address it the proper way.”

On a funnier note, Scott recalls how he met his girlfriend — whom he prefers to keep anonymous — at a dog park: “I thought she had a great bottom and she thought I was gay.” We love him.

Kirsten Storms (Maxie, 'GH') proves real-life bad girls also exist on soaps!

General Hospital (CTV/ABC) — Two DUI arrests: Lindsay Lohan influence alert!
It’s an official epidemic: Kirsten Storms (Maxie) was arrested for drunk driving over the weekend after an L.A. officer noticed a lit cigarette being thrown from her blue Mercedes (don’t you hate when that happens?). According to the police report, officers "noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from the vehicle." After several sobriety tests, she was arrested for DUI and released on $5000 bail.

Meanwhile, TMZ.com revealed days later that former soap hunk Sean Kanan (ex-AJ, GH; ex-Deacon, B&B) also found himself in trouble with the law when the LAPD busted him on Aug. 18 for suspicion of DUI. Kanan posted $30,000 bail on Aug. 18. Both actors had no comment.

In happier news, GH was the only daytime soap opera to make Time Magazine’s list of top 100 Best TV Shows of All Time thanks to a certain couple: Luke and Laura. What? Passions wasn’t good enough for the list? Bygones.

Guiding Light (CH/CBS) — Reva’s weighty future!
According to our pal Michael Logan of TV Guide USA, producers are considering a weighty storyline for Reva — sponsored by NutriSystem (honestly, folks — isn’t it bad when marketing departments start telling you what to write?). Hmmm … we wonder what Kim Zimmer has to say about this latest development! Meanwhile, Reva and Alan come back from California this week with murder and blood on their hands (unfortunately, they didn’t kill Cassie)! Expect this plot twist to create a scary little love triangle between Jeffrey/Reva/Alan! We’re slightly intrigued, we admit …

I Wanna be a Soap Star (Star!) – First rule: Sleep with your co-stars!
It’s finally here, folks: Cameron Mathison (Ryan, AMC) will host the crappy first season of I Wanna be a Soap Star, beginning Sept. 12 at 9 p.m. ET. The American Idol wannabes include judges Debbi Morgan (ex-Angie, AMC), GH casting director Mark Teschner, and soap agent Michael Bruno. We won’t spoil who proves victorious, if you can call it that, but we’ll reveal that the winner “won” an extra-sized role on GH in 2005 and then was shot dead scenes later! Oh, the glory! But don’t worry: the show gets better as seasons go on … so tune in!

One Life to Live (A-Channel/ABC) — Jared Banks rules!
TV Guide is suffering a major case of crush-itis on sexy and talented newcomer John Brotherton (Jared). Yummy to the max, is all we have to say — we can’t keep our eyes off of him! Here’s the scoop: we find out this week that Jared shares a past with Jessica’s alter, Tess, and later somehow manages to find his cute white tush lying next to that wannabe Natalie in bed (memo to John: fire your agent immediately)! Also, this week, Todd’s violent past is used against him in the fight for Tommy. Does headwriter Ron Carlivati know an umbrella story or what? Bravo!

Passions (DirecTV/SuperChannel) – Passions: Canada-bound!
Bad news first: Passions has brought Vincent back from the dead, rehiring one of the worst actors ever on soaps, Phillip Jeanmarie, when new episodes hit DirecTV on Sept. 17. However, the semi-good news is that sometime in October a new Canadian premium station called SuperChannel will air Passions in Canada! But won’t it feel dirty to have to pay to watch that crap? Discuss.

Bravo to Trent Dawson (Henry, 'ATWT'), who is clearly adept at drama and comedy

The Young and the Restless (Global/CBS) — Victor saves Phyllis!
Hmmm … did headwriter Lynn Marie Latham actually think of an interesting plot twist all on her own? Looks like it this week: in an effort to continue his revenge on Jack, Victor offers a get-out-of-jail-free card to his daughter-in-law if she helps him bring down you-know-who! Bring it on!

MASTER CLASS: THE BEST OF THE BEST
Trent Dawson, As the World Turns
TV Guide has written enough about our affection and respect for Mr. Trent Dawson (Henry), who is sadly underused on this horribly written show. However, we feel the need to applaud his efforts once again this week, however miniscule in quantity, after Henry shared a telling chat with Noah’s father, Winston Mayer.

When the homophobic military man questioned Henry’s sexuality, it was both comedic and tragic because it was all Henry needed to know about the general and what was happening in his sister’s life — even if she had no clue. Did anyone watch Brokeback Mountain in Oakdake — other than Henry? Seriously.

Although this is ATWT’s only saving grace when it comes to storylines (does headwriter Jean Passanante have a split personality, or does she have a ghost writer on the side?), Dawson brought it all to life by championing the cause and absorbing the shock of prejudice, even if he wasn’t the subject of it.

The Emmy-nominated actor is clearly a versatile performer — and he isn’t given enough credit for his talents. In fact, in those few moments Dawson stole the show and easily proved that Henry, despite being high maintenance at times and slightly cliché, is a real human being with real depth, emotion and instincts.

In true form, Henry immediately ran to his sister Maddie to fill her in and we were impressed and delighted that someone on daytime had the brains to figure things out before it was spelt out for them in big pink letters in the sky, without it being sweeps period. Bravo!

RANT OF THE WEEK: It’s official: Y&R’s Cane has no taste!
Leave it to Y&R’s headwriter Lynn Marie Latham to cancel out her only brilliant idea this year (see the Y&R item above) by having Cane kiss Lily this week! Gross-erella to the max, people! Not only does Cane have no taste in women (hello, Amber!), but he also has no self-esteem despite his gorgeous looks, seductive charm and undying loyalty. We’re questioning our love for you, Mr. Goddard!

The Suds Report: Sept. 24, 2007
By Nelson Branco

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Genie Francis returns; Kelly Monaco re-signs with ‘GH’! Todd and Blair wed; Timbaland visits 'OLTL'; will Sami wed EJ on ‘Days’?

Jon Hensley (Holden) may get a new love interest on 'ATWT'

All My Children (A-Channel/ABC) — Recast controversy!
NuBabe premières Oct. 8 in a controversial actor switcheroo — look for Alexa Havens to morph into GH: Night Shiift’s Amanda Baker (Jolene) in the middle of a hug with Krystal in a single scene. We don’t see why this is so controversial —it’s the most exciting thing to happen in Pine Valley in years! Heck, we may even watch AMC that day!

As the World Turns (CH/CBS) — A new love for Holden?
Is ATWT recasting Bonnie as a love interest for Holden Snyder? According to Soap Opera Weekly, writers have made Jessica’s daughter a jet-setting lawyer who shares a past with Vienna. Holden needs some loving because he’s not getting any from Lily — so we like this idea.

Also, Hottie Dylan Bruce has been cast as nuChris Hughes and will begin appearing in late September/early October. And, this week Winston catches Luke and Noah swapping spit on Wednesday — which awakens his inner psycho. Personally, I think Winston has a thing for the same sex, much in the same vein as Senator Larry Craig! You know what they say: he who doth protest too much …

The Bold and the Beautiful (CTV/CBS) — The Flannery effect
Poor John McCook! The actor tells Soap Opera Weekly that the scripts in which Eric learns that Stephanie was responsible for raping Brooke was a “great moment, but I lost the scenes.” Originally, it was written that Eric kicks Stephanie out of his house – and life – for good.

It makes us wonder how the Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke) and Susan Flannery (Stephanie) showdown would’ve played out. However, we see a silver lining in Flannery’s medical leave — it’s giving KKL the space to act her heart out without being upstaged by Flannery, whose absence could actually help KKL nab a nomination for once.

Coronation Street (CBC) – Comeback alert!
Former Coronation Street star Nigel Pivaro has been approached to reprise his role as Terry Duckworth to help facilitate Liz Dawn’s (Vera) exit. Pivaro hasn’t signed on yet, but is expected to, according to set insiders.

Days of our Lives (Global/NBC) — Sami to marry EJ!
No major news to report this week, but here are some story teasers: Steve finds Benjy near death; Bo saves his father from Stefano’s machinations; Salem searches for a missing Roman; and Sami and EJ are forced to marry to end the Brady-DiMera feud. Yep, the show still sucks.

Genie Francis (ex-Laura, 'GH') returns to TV, but not to daytime

General Hospital (CTV/ABC) — Francis lands TV-movie; Monaco stays on GH
Emmy winner Genie Francis isn’t waiting by the phone for GH’s call: she’s starring in Hallmark Channel’s The Note, which premières Dec. 8 and also stars Ted McGinley. Meanwhile, Francis’s former co-star Kelly Monaco (Sam) has re-signed with the soap. Also, this should make Josh Duhon (Logan) happy: Logan and Nikolas beat the living crap out of each other on Friday, while Trevor threatens Ric’s life. Can’t we all get along, people? Former Port Charles hunk Jay Pickett (ex-Frank) begins playing detective David Harper on Oct 9. Pickett temporarily replaced an ailing Ted King as Alcazar in March 2006. Look for Tony Geary (Luke) to return to Port Charles in the week of Oct. 8.

Guiding Light (CH/CBS) — Daddy dearest?
Now this could be awkward: Frank Dicopoulos's (Frank) daughter Olivia has been hired to play Matt and Vanessa's daughter Maureen beginning on Oct. 16 —and will no doubt have more of a storyline than her father! In story news, Alan kisses Natalia on Friday, while Beth is rushed to the hospital!

One Life to Live (A-Channel/ABC) — Timbaland: OLTL-bound! Who’s next? Justin Timberlake?
Just got an e-mail from our sexy pal Catherine Hickland (Lindsay), who advises us not to miss today’s show, saying, “It’s a goodie!” Don’t worry, Cat. We wouldn’t miss any day you’re on for all the sex with Brad Pitt — we need to know if our suspicion that Spencer raped Lindsay before she killed him is correct.

Meanwhile, OLTL has been on a rock ‘n’ roll kick all year, featuring the likes of Mary J. Blige and Nelly Furtado. Now, the soap will welcome Justin Timberlake’s best friend in the business, Timothy “Timbaland” Mosley, who will appear as himself on daytime’s best soap on Oct. 9. Timbaland will perform "The Way I Are" from the Grammy Award-winning producer's second solo album, Timbaland Presents Shock Value. "I am very excited to have been afforded this opportunity on OLTL," says Timbaland. "This is a new experience for me. I am looking forward to having a great time and sharing my music!” Memo to executive producer Frank Valentini: we’d love to see Justin Timberlake bring sexy back to daytime. Hint. Wink. Nudge. In casting news, OLTL has cast a new love interest for Viki; Brian Kerwin (ex-Greg Foster, Y&R) debuts in late October as Charlie.

Also, TV Guide caught up with Tuc Watkins (David) at the prime time Emmy Awards and he told us he's thrilled to be on Desperate Housewives. "I'm having the best time. Everyone's been so nice," he reports. As for his return to OLTL this fall, Watkins sadly informs us, "I'm only back for a little bit to wrap things up, and then I'm off for the foreseeable future. But, you know, I never say never when it comes to OLTL."

Passions (DirecTV/SuperChannel) – Sheridan attempts to kill her daddy!
Is anyone out there still watching Passions? Today, Sheridan does us all a favour and tries to kill Alistair, while Tabitha and Kay travel to a new dimension (how about reality?), and little Ethan goes missing.

The Young and the Restless (Global/CBS) — Lauren: the sound of reason
Let’s cut to the chase here: this Thursday, Lauren tells Michael she’s sick of Lynn Marie Latham’s writing, and she won’t tolerate any lying in her family anymore! Also, Phyllis gets a familiar cellmate, Jack confesses, and Brad causes trouble for Sharon..

Kassie DePaiva (Blair, above) and Trevor St. John (Todd) rule 'OLTL'

MASTER CLASS: THE BEST OF THE BEST
Trevor St. John and Kassie DePaiva, One Life to Live
As star-crossed lovers Blair and Todd, Trevor St. John and Kassie DePaiva could easily be phoning in their latest on-screen reunion (this week, the dysfunctional schemers tie the knot for the umpteenth time), but the actors are actually hitting their stride as their characters fight for custody of baby Tommy. As a result, St. John and DePaiva are doing some of their best work of their careers thanks to their understated yet powerful take on their characters’ dysfunctional love for each other.

Most of the credit goes to new headwriter Ron Carlivati, who wrote beautiful scenes for DePaiva and St. John this past week, which in turn helped re-establish Blair and Todd as the super-couple they are meant to be. We’re thrilled St. John didn’t bail earlier this year when his contract expired, because his delicious and often-times hilarious take on Todd Manning — a spoiled little rich kid who wants what he wants yesterday — is inspiring and infectious to watch.

Also, St. John looks like he’s having fun on-screen with Todd’s psychosis, something Roger Howarth (ex-Todd; Paul, ATWT) never communicated through his acting. Also, it’s nice to see DePaiva’s Blair written as the smart and compassionate woman Todd fell in love with years ago. Simply put, the Manning family is the new Quartermaine Family (GH) — and we can’t get enough of them.

RANT OF THE WEEK: Brooke tells Nick she was raped on B&B
Next to Stephanie learning Brooke was raped by Andy, we’ve been dying for Nick, the only person to ever truly love Brooke, to hear the shocking and devastating news. In our mind, Nick would have gone ballistic, and would hunt down Stephanie and kill her. Unfortunately, when B&B finally wrote the highly anticipated scene, most of the reveal happened off camera, with Nick basically shrugging off the incident by offering friendly support and compassion. Huh? If this reveal were written as it should have been, Jack Wagner (Nick) would have his Emmy reels in the bag by now. Instead, the soap is making Ridge, who sexually assaulted Brooke in the past, the hero of the story — and that’s been a crime in its own right.
