BOSTON BOMBINGS! :O

on the 31st of January, in a kind of big city in Massachusetts (which is a state, apparently) the city of boston (which is apparently is said state, Massachusetts) came under a violent, obscene, and attack... OF STUPIDITY.

Aqua Team Hunger Force, airing on Adult Swim after 12AM, used a marketing campaign of leaving circuit boards wrapped in black electrical tape around the city, and when turned on, LEDs would show one of the shows characters flipping the bird. The devices included a light sensor, so the LEDs were only on at night.

and now i copy from wikipedia.

A Turner Broadcasting System marketing campaign involving leaving magnetic lights around various populated areas of the city went awry as several police agencies suspected these devices to be bombs of some sort. Turner confirmed the packages had been placed as part of a guerrilla marketing campaign, and a statement released by Turner Broadcasting at approximately 4:30 pm EST that evening clarified that the packages were in fact magnetic lights, not bombs. (A-DURRR)

Portions of the Turner statement read: "We regret that they were mistakenly thought to pose any danger. The packages in question are magnetic lights that pose no danger. They are part of an outdoor marketing campaign in 10 cities in support of Adult Swim's animated television show Aqua Teen Hunger Force."

"They have been in place for two to three weeks in Boston, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland, Austin, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Parent company Turner Broadcasting is in contact with local and federal law enforcement on the exact locations of the billboards. We regret that they were mistakenly thought to pose any danger." The devices had been up in the cities listed for two weeks before the Boston incident occurred.

The marketing company responsible for the campaign, Interference Inc., has made no comment on the situation and their website has also been down. Peter Berdovsky, an employee of the company, has been arrested by Boston police under a recently enacted law that makes it a crime to place "hoax devices" that panic the public.

In other cities the devices caused little or no discernible reaction. A Seattle police spokesman said "We haven't had any calls to 911 regarding this." Police in Philadelphia removed 56 devices without incident. The New York Police Department removed 41 devices according to NYPD spokesman Paul Browne. The NYPD did not receive any complaints. When they became aware of the situation in Boston they contacted Cartoon Network, which provided the locations so the devices could be removed.

Arrests

As a result of the bomb scare, two arrests have been made. Peter Berdovsky, 27, a freelance video artist from Arlington, Massachusetts, and Sean Stevens, 28, of Charlestown, Massachusetts, were facing charges of placing a "hoax device" in a way that results in panic. Additional charges are being considered against the Turner Broadcasting Network and marketing firm. The two initial suspects have pled "not guilty." When Assistant Attorney General John Grossman described the devices as appearing like bombs, the suspects reacted with amusement, and there was snickering in the gallery.

In the first public interview of the suspects with their lawyer in front of the court building since they were charged, the suspects brought up the topic of '70s haircuts and refused to discuss anything else, amidst reporters' accusations that they were not taking the situation seriously. Their lawyer repeatedly told the various reporters that they were told not to discuss the case. According to Fox News, fans of ATHF mocked Boston officials during the press conference, calling the arrests an overreaction while holding signs supporting the actions of the two. These signs had slogans such as "1-31-07 Never Forget," making light of Mayor Tom Menino's comparisons to 9/11.

Prosecution of Stevens and Berdovsky

At their arraignment, Assistant Attorney General Grossman said “It's clear the intent was to get attention by causing fear and unrest that there was a bomb in that location," however Judge Leary said that it will be necessary for the prosecution to demonstrate an intent on the part of the suspects to cause a panic. The judge continues “It appears the suspects had no such intent, …but the question should be discussed in a later hearing.”

I read this on Nodwick.Com. I'd like to say that, in part, does EVERY SINGLE electronic device = a bomb? I think the residents are a wee bit paranoid, if not at (at least) 10% fault. Seriously, in this case it was the equivalent to a Lite-Brite(tm) being left on the street.

This, along with This video, has knocked my faith in mankind's intellect down a few pegs.

Fuck this stupid Florida!

I read that yesterday. I can safely say I've never laughed harder in my life. Pancake Mix stated my feelings exactly with his last statement. And aside from that, Aqua Team Hunger Force is funny enough without all this. I wonder if they'll do an episode about it...

Blah, I hate that show. How anyone can just put that stuff all over the city without police or civilians watching confuses the heck out of me. Heck, if they were set up that far ahead, how come no one noticed the ads until now?

watch the CIA or the FBI or the IRS or the FEDS comes onto this site because we're using so many of their "hitwords" that they screen for in one place and arrest us all. O.o that would suck.

Think of it from the terrorists perspective.

Best way to set bombs? Make a bunch of harmless little light up things, make only one or two of them actually bombs.

Bingo, you've got a massive set of damage. Boston kinda had to react this way, no matter how stupid it seems.

Is the potential loss of life worth it even if it appears to be nothing, but could be dangerous?

No.

you'd think in the two weeks it the things were sitting around for before they were reported one person would have the good sense to say, "You know, i'm going to take this thing apart to see if it's a bomb or not before they decide to shut down the city on account of there being one every once in a while. <<"

but i guess not.

y'know, they didn't have to arrest those guys, though.

Brian, you're argument is moot by the fact that the TV company SAID THEY DID IT.

Normally, a bomb squad checks to see if anything is ACTUALLY AN EXPLOSIVE before doign this sort of thing though, might I add. They cordone the area off, and check it. If it's a bomb, then kabbom. If not, they re-open the area, not nearly incite a riot.

And hitword system you say? *cracks knuckles* YOU ASKED FOR IT, FBI!

Al-Qaeda
Afhganistan
Israel
Pakistan
Iran
Iraq
Bombs
Nukes
Weapons of Mass Destruction
Anthrax
Smallpox
Muhammad
Assassination
Terrorist Plot
Infidel Americans
Satan
Jihad
Osama Bin Laden

Watch them call my cell phone in 3 minutes, XD.
