I happened to be absent for a month and a half and recently came back into roleplaying; however, during this time, I came to this board about 5 or 6 times a day to see what was going on and looked a little more into the out of character posts. I am especially concerned about what Rabarta (Joel, didn't know if he still accepted to be called by his board name) said in his own topic. I noticed a lot of doomsaying these days about this board and frankly, this bothers me a lot. I see peoples leaving for different reasons and I see a bunch of doomsayers preaching the end of this board and enjoying themselves about the chaos they notice or create. I don't intend to flame or to blame anyone about this, but I would like to perhaps give a few suggestions about how we might bring this board into something more enjoyable for both the staffs and the players; and maybe obtain their personal opinions or suggestions regarding this issue. --- First, let's see a few facts that may point out what is currently happening. 1) The staff members don't feel appreciated and are flooded by work, which forces them to choose between the board and their real life; and their choice is understandable, as our real life is far more important than the board. 2) The influx of new members has trouble keeping up with the senior members that are leaving, and the board seems to be losing in popularity. 3) Roleplaying may have gotten out of hand, as several complains from senior members came saying that the way to roleplay here changed, and not for the best. 4) We are invaded by advertising from other boards that are stealing our members progressively. 5) Some member feels that they aren't listened to. --- Now let's see what may be done about this situation. 1) Of course, there's little that we can do about this, staff members are also humans, not some kinds of robots that are supposed to do everything that you ask them. The only solution that I can think of is to lighten the staff members work; by finding a way to divide their work more equally, instead of the actual system that say: " The one that see it or receive a PM about it; is the one that will handle it ". Perhaps, the thing that used to be within Brian sig is the solution; divide the work between the members so that they may work more effectively, such as: One handle the Job BSS and receive periodic help from another one; another one take care of the wanted, hit and liberation board; another one handle the new NPC/player profiles and may also take care of transmitting player requests to the staff(May also be given to another person). For the admins, one of them take care of the group banners and group changes, while another one handle the events and another one might handle the development and players suggestions. 2) Perhaps some advertising or modification to the actual system might help, I'm not exactly an expert in that regard(Nor am I in anything else in that post, some may have better suggestions). 3) Perhaps the suggestion of updating the rules may be a good start, one of the main problems with the newest players and some older ones is that no one has the same same idea of how to roleplay. Maybe the members may create their own versions of the rules, clarifying the obscure aspects of roleplaying and by doing so, adding a roleplaying etiquette so that everyone may enjoy themselves. I may be willing to take part in this and giving an insight about what I noticed, but I'm sure that many of you would like to take part in making the board into something you'll enjoy. There's also the board etiquette that is obviously lacking, such as the far too common bumps and double posts, which may need to be added. 4) I see that board advertising may have gotten a little out of hand; some members have begun advertising their own board out of the affiliate sections, saying that their board is so much better and using their board as a reference to add their own ideas to the board without any solid evidence. There's also the invitations to the members that are leaving, saying that this board is going to hell and that theirs is far better, inciting members to leave for their own. If those members are only there to advertise their own board, maybe there's something wrong about this... 5) The fact that members don't see it, doesn't mean that they aren't listened to, maybe laziness is to blame in that regard, as they never really give any example of what they want and don't suggest and concrete idea regarding their suggestions; and there's also the fact that several things such soul unison and beast out(before it got implemented) were suggested without any solid system again, again and again. Don't give a vague idea without any way to implement it, this only contribute into making the admins angrier. --- I don't believe that I am right, but I don't believe that I'm in the wrong either; so the best way to stop those doomsayers would probably involve a better cooperation between the members and the staffs, so that we may create something that will benefit every single members in some way. Perhaps you even have some ideas of your own, so why not all head in the same direction and help each others in that regard? Feel free to give your opinions on what I have said and see if we might come to a solution to make the board even more successful. Note: This isn't a complain or flame topic, so refrain from doing any of these. My goal is help in the development of the board, I like this place and I hate it when peoples spit on it. |
