Short paragraph answer, like i did in the begining of chapter 7 before i lost my mind... i have the general idea of whats going on and all, and i know the answers, i just cant bring myself to writing one more thing down... D:

even if you guys don't help me, this is my excuse for why i haven't been around today much, and probably wont be around tomorrow when i race to finish it.

and on top of that, my research paper is due in a week...

Chapter 7

Vocabulary
1. Capitulated:
2. Pervaded:
3. Stupefied:
4. Countenance:

Questions
1. Napoleon is growing more distant and is not seen in public very often. How does he deal with the rebellion of the hens?
Napoleon orders the hens to stop being fed, and cuts off their food supply for five days before they gave up and returned to work. Nine of the hens had died in the mean time, though.
2. Why did the hens rebel?
The hens rebelled because Napoleon had kept taking their eggs and selling them out, and they had gotten tired of it.
3. What is ironic about the situation?
The hens were rebelling against the government that had been put into power from a rebellion, but they weren’t having any luck getting their way.
4. What is snowball blamed for?
Snowball is blamed for anything that happened in the night, messing with the cows and other such acts. Napoleon claimed he could smell Snowball in the area every day when something would go wrong.
5. Boxer first objects to the characterization of snowballs behavior at the Battle of the Cowshed as treachery. Confused, he says, “I don’t believe that [snowball was less than brave or loyal at the battle].” But Squealer breaks down his resistance to the propaganda when he says that Napoleon has declared it so. What is Boxer’s response?
Boxer responded with “If Napoleon says it, it must be so,” because of his old saying “Napoleon is always right.” He doesn’t seem to have given up, however, but drops the discussion.
6. What comment on human nature might Orwell be making in this exchange between Comrade Napoleon and Boxer?
He is probably claiming something along the lines of the people are easily shifted when they believe in something like their leader, and that propaganda is very persuasive to changing minds.
7. What is suggested by the “very ugly look” Squealer gives Boxer?
Squealer is probably planning something for what seems like Boxer knows too much and should be stopped before he gets too smart for his own good, so to speak.
8. The bloody scene in front of the farmhouse comes next. How might the confessions or killings relate to Russia in the 1930’s?

9. When the blood-letting ends, what do the animals do? What are their feelings?
10. As they look down on the farm, what are Clover’s thoughts?
11. Why does Squealer say the song Beasts of England is no longer appropriate? What is sung in its place?

Chapter 8

3. Beatifically:
4. Unscathed:

2. Hitler signed a non-aggression pact with Russia, but he went back on it and invaded Russia. How is this represented in the book?
3. What enables the animals to defeat Fredrick’s armed forces?
4. How do the animals react after the battle? What does Napoleon do?
5. Why does Squealer report Napoleon is dying?
6. The narrator begins the next-to-last paragraph, “About this time there occurred a strange incident which hardly anyone was able to understand.” What was this incident?
7. A few days later the animals found another commandment that they “had remembered wrong.” What was it?
8. What one animal makes the connection between squealer’s acts and the commandments?
9. At the opening of this chapter, why did Benjamin refuse to read the Sixth Commandment when clover asked him?

2. How does Squealer once again use language to mask reality?
3. What are some other signs that life is becoming unequal?
4. While the farm prospers, life is harder and harder for the animals. The narrator says if life was hard it was “partly offset by the fact that life nowadays had a greater dignity than it had before.” What was it that gave this dignity?
5. Although the pigs do not believe in what Moses says, why do they allow him to return and even provide him with food?
6.  Throughout the book, Benjamin has observed everything but neither approved nor disapproved of anything. What causes him to break into a gallop; then later read? Remember, he said earlier that while he can read quite well, there is nothing worth reading.
7. Boxer’s removal and demise are both poignant and filled with ironies. Why is it impossible for him to kick his way out of the van? Instead of promising retirement, what awaits him? How were Old Major’s comments to boxer in chapter one prophetic?
8. The final irony is that “somewhere or another” the pigs got money to buy themselves another case of whisky for the banquet held in Boxer’s honor. Where was the money from?

5. Throughout the chapter, the pigs become more like humans. List some of the ways.
6. The animals are amazed and terrified to see the pigs walking upright and once again the bleating of the sheep forestalls any protest. How has their slogan changed?

8. What do the animals observe through the farmhouse window?
9. Pilkington praises the pigs’ management of the farm by saying that there was a good deal of learning they could do from the pigs because “the lower animals on animal farm did more work and received less food than any animals in the country.” What is the joke with which Pilkington concludes?
10. Napoleon tells then that Animal Farm is going back to its old name, Manor farm. What is the final dramatic point Orwell makes regarding the old rulers and the new rulers?
