Wow. Just last night I saw a marathon on Spike tv of the new show by GONZO productions (creators of Ghost in the Shell and other anime greats.) Afro Samurai and I loved it. The series is a tale of revenge as our quiet main character searches for the greatest warrior in the world, in revenge for killing his father. In this world the person who owns the sacred headband of the #1 warrior in the world is a god on earth and only the #2 warrior head band owner may challenge him (anyone can challenge #2). The world he lives in is a "futuristic yet fuedal" japan. The environment is feudal japan yet some modern technologies are prevelant (flamethrowers, robots, cell phones, RPGs, etc.) Also, the main character and his foul mouthed, loud mouthed, ebonomics speaking ninja companion, Ninja Ninja (who may or may not be imaginary) are both played by Samuel L Jackson. Each of the 5 episodes of the series took about 1 million dollars to make thus making the series in a whole worth 5 million dollars. Here is an AMV to give you a sample of the animation http://youtube.com/watch?v=UW3v-eCBEqc Also a wikipedia article to give you more information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afro_samurai I for one loved this show and its brilliant design. I hope you guys try and get into it too since the 2 disk dvd set with 15 minutes of edited footage too brutal for tv (that's right Spike TV only edited out 15 minutes of material and threw the rest in. They had to put the show on late at night because of language and violence. Because of the time slot they were allowed to say shit without being bleeped. They were even allowed to show the mass violence involved in each episode.) So yea all 5 episodes +15 extra minutes of action coming soon on DVD. |
