The Voice of Reason in an Unreasonable world

I've decided that now that i got my research paper and the third marking period of school is over, I would start a project online in the easy downward slope, before the year ends with the brutal regents spike.

wonder what my mission is?

HE is my mission.

That's right. The big one.

We're gonna Email Jack Thompson.

Why him? Who the hell else is that big of a problem to our community nowadays, and who in their right mind WOULDNT try to sway the guy from his current state of insanity?

But, I can't do it alone. that's why I'm coming to you guys. this is our chance to do something a bit bigger than you and I; it's a chance to get into his mind. make yourselves known, though, and clear the name of video games and other bullshit he's been spouting for ages!

After all: Video games don't kill people, People kill people.

So, if you all want to help out my crusade, which will probably go ignored, most likely (but it's always good to try, right?), start writing your comments, questions, responses, attacks, ect. to Mister Jack Thompson. After all, the world would be a better place, and the satire and fun-poking is only so helpful. time to start rallying people, you know?

a few rules, however, because this might get ugly.

- DONT BE TOO RUDE. he might be off his rocker, but it will only fuel his idiotic fires.
- DONT SWEAR (too much). again, see rule 1.
- Try to be somewhat tasteful.
- Post your messages to him here, so people can look them over and such. I'll put them all together in a month or so.
- Anything else that makes sense as a rule.

think we can do it?

do you think anything will happen?

most likely, no, but it's worth a shot to try.

How do you know he'll read it? Anyway:

"Mr. Thompson...A lot of people are really angry with you for your constant attacks on the gaming industry...especially the gamers themselves, I've read people call you a jerk, a self-rightous idiot, and say you have a hero complex, even. But I want to be reasonable. I've played every violent game you've spoken out agianst(except Bully, that never appealed to me), and have been an avid gamer since I was 6, and I'm now 15. I'm the most calm person in my district, so surely not EVERYONE is brainwashed into a savage by violent games. Isn't it the PARENTS responsibility to not expose children to violent games? Much like how you can outlaw illegal drugs, and they still get used, Violent games(Rated M, at least) are banned from sale to minors. But there parents buy the games for them. So doesn't that mean that the PARENTS, not the COMPANIES are mostly to blame? You may want to start a movement to tighten restrictions on slae to minors, but in either case, the companys aren't at fault. They SAY that "This game is violent, don't give it to kids" with the M rating, so the fault lies with the distributors and the parents. be a champion against THEM, not the innocent!

With a degree of confusion,
Pancake Mix"

That guy who hasn't changed his avatart...

Well, I wish you the best of luck Yoyo. Well, here's my part:

"Mr. Thompson, I've played video games since I was five, and I really don't think that your idea's about video games is some what off. While I'll admit that some games out there are not ment for childrin, that dosen't mean everyone who playes them is going to turn into a killer. I've played games like Halo, and Perfect Dark, and a lot more that are very violent games, but I'm not a violent person. In fact, the only time I have ever been in a fight was when I saw a freind of mine getting picked on at school. And even then, I was nine, and it wasn't much of a fight. So what I'm saying is that, while it's true that some people who are violent play some of the games you have spoken out against, but there are a lot more poeple that play those games and are still normal, happy people.

Dear Mr Thompson,

Hm. Where to start. PM adressed the biggest issue- it's the parents' responsibility. Everything in a child's life is influenced by their parents- personally, I was never allowed to watch Rugrats as a child. If our parents can keep us from doing simple things such as turning on the TV when a certain program comes on, it must be well within their boundaries to restrict their children from accessing video games. Game companies have shown their support for the parents- things such as the ESRB and parental controls programmed into certain consoles (such as the Nintendo Wii) make a parent's job easier than ever- many stores won't even consider selling M Rated games to someone that LOOKS like a minor, unless they have proper ID. A couple of my older friends have told me that "they assualted me like I was trying to rob the place", to show how much difficulty they had purchasing the games that you lable violent and brutal. As much as you may not want to admit it, there are simply some things that are better left up to society. When a country tries to take the place of a parent, then there is no way to know where they will stop.

Think about the weight of the Bill of Rights, Mr. Thompson. Without free speech, you might not even be able to publish (or have) YOUR opinion, unless the government agreed. This is the very right you are trying to undermine.

Also, I have a request. If you actually take the time to read this (it would be rather closeminded of you to hold your current stance without looking at what your opponents are saying), I would like a complete list of crimes where videogames were PROVED, beyond reasonable doubt, the motivation. Then I would like you to take a step back, and look at that number compared to the actual number of juvinile offenses commited. I think you will find that the former, if such a list actually exists, is far outshadowed by the latter.

The truth is, there is no way to prove that videogames are the cause for everything. Children nowadays have so many influences bearing on their minds- music, television, peers, current events, even alchohol and drugs. Videogames are one of many factors that could cause teens to make such irresponsible choices.

Finally, I'd liek to share MY personal experence with videogames. I play videogames on a regular basis- not as much as those who call themselves "hardcore" gamers, but still a good amount. My favorite games, currently, are Far Cry: Vengence, and Call of Duty 3. Both of these are "violent" videogames. But I have never carried brutality out of the play experence. In fact, it's often the opposite- taking out my frustrations on computer-generated images often helps me to stay calmer the rest of the time. Most of my other games are arcade type games, or RPGs, or puzzle games. The truth is, "videogames" is such a wide term that you can't say something like "videogames cause violence". True, some people play violent videogames. But that doesn't mean that's all they play, or that violence is the only play method in that game. Many times, these games call for strategy or puzzle solving. I am a gamer- I am also a nonviolent, mentally stable fifteen year old.

I hope you actually take this letter seriously; from what I have heard, that's not very often the case.

Sincerely,

Jules Guidry

It might be a short one but at least i made it:

Mr.Thompson I have played video games since i was eight years old and i really dont think that your idea about video games is allright,I might not be the the most quiet boy of my school but i dont go hitting people because i play very violent games. If the games that are violent should be taken away then why not also the violent movies, and comics, and TV Shows..They are exactly the same thing just that videogames are playable. Also to prevent young children from playing those games is why the rate them but if some seller sells the games without caring about their ages,or parents buy them to their children, then they are the real guilty.

With a lot of respect

Don't bother. Any of you. Trust me on this, a reasonable 14 year old emailed Jack Thompson, and in CLEAN, ADULT LEVEL WRITING, make a counter argument to Thompson about each of his beliefs. It was well written, fair, and absolutely polite.

Jack ignored the bulk of it, called the kid a pixelante, and melted into threats of "I'M GONNA SUE YOU!" and petty name calling. No wonder he's alienating more and more of the world.

No, actually, I want to see his reply to this e-mail.

I will then proceed to copy-paste it to Word, save it on my computer, and e-mail it to the prosecution of any court case in which Jack claims videogames are the culprit.

That, and look at it from time to time to give myself a good laugh.

Heck, if he responds like this in that way, let's email it to the next newspaper that carries a story of him....

But I'll print my copy out, make duplicates of it, and frame it for posterity. And laugh my sodding butt off every time I see it.

To Mr. Jack Thompson

I am a gamer. I've been one since as long as I can remember. I was practically raised with an NES controller in my hand. I beat Suer Mario Bros. Before I could walk. The others who have written to you (Jules, Pancake Mix,) have gotten the basic point across. It's up to the parents to ensure that children do not get games they are not ready for. When I was a child, I was given a copy of Duke Nukem for the Nintendo 64 by an aunt. When my mother saw me playing  it, she took it and returned it, getting me Bomberman 64 in return. Now, in this tie and day, parents are not paying attention to what their kids are playing. Kids could be playing God of War 2, and their parents will not mind. Now, with that in mind, there are some parents that will take the game, return it, and get something like Kingdom hearts 2. To those parents, I salute them. To the parents who let their kids play those violent games when they are in a state of mental development, I have to ask if they are doing their jobs as parents. I also have to ask where the kids got those games. as far as i can tell, there are 2 possibilities:

1: They were sold the game without an ID (wherein the fault lies with the store)

Or the more likely situation:

2: The parents or some relative is buying them the game. (In this case, the fault lays in the adults hands.)

One more thing that needs to be taken into account is the state of mind the player of these games has. My sibling is, quite simply, off his rocker. He ditches school, hangs out with delinquints, attacks and harms students, and the like. He happens to play the same games I do. I am a student at a private high school, I have NEVER ditched in my school career, and while I don't like some of my classmates, i still remain civil with them, as to not cause strife. If Videogames were to blame for my brothers actions, then why have I not commited the same actions? Simply put, our brains are different. I have Asperger's syndrome, and my brother has ODD, Which makes him disapprove of any form of authority. Videogames may help him become a little more violent, but Videogames also help me be less violent. I take out most of my frustrations on video game characters, so that I can relieve stress. I also use games like World of Warcraft to help build up my patheticly low socialization skills. i'm not the only one who plays games to take off stress. In my class, everyone has a game to play to relieve stress, the most common one being Guitar hero.

I sadly have nothing else to say at this point, Mr. Thompson. I eagerly await your response

Dear Mr. Thompson. You are probably writing me off as another victim of the torture you call 'Video Games', and wants the torture to continue. Sadly enough, you are wrong. Because I think it is a very sad thing that your name can be used as a joke or as an insult to a person.

I've heard of people shouting out phrases such as:

"Oh god, he's a Thompson!"

"Our society is being poisoned by the Thompson."

And many more, but let's cut the crap. Was writing for a simple reason, which is to tell you that the amount of kids who actually do what they're taught from video games is close to nil.

Let's try out a simple theory.

To play a video game, you need a console. you also need to buy the game itself. To buy both the console and the game, you need money. Lots of money. You also need a TV, which is also a lot of cash. Then you also need to apply for electricity in your home to play the console and the TV. To do that, you need a house and a steady income of cash for the bills. To get a house, you need to fork out a lot of cash and also wait a few years for your response to live in a flat, or if you want it on demand, you must fork out even MORE money for a house immediately.

All of this, requires that you get a job and need a lot of money to scrape by.

As society does not offer a lot of high paying jobs to everyone, this means you need to cut out the non-necessities.

You do not need a TV, or a game, or a console. In fact, you do not need electricty. You need water. Food. And a bed. That's it.

So if everyone were to follow the above method, the TV Company, the Media, the Electric Company not to mention the Video Game Industry would be closed down. And without Electricty, the Computer Industry would also have to close down.

And because so many industries and companies must close down because of no customers, less people and less people have jobs and more and more are fired because there's not enough industries who have jobs.

More and more homeless and poor people. Not enough jobs. Not enough priveleges. And because everyone is now poor, the world cannot get back on its feet. if the industries were to start up again, nobody could afford to buy their stuff, and they would have to sell cheaper, inducting a loss.

The world is affected and society will collapse.

Video Games is not a necessity, and neither is TV, or Electricity, or a Computer. But the fact that you can read this e-mail proves that you have all 3. Which would also naturally mean that you agree that some things are required and others not but it's good to have them anyways.

Let me repeat:

You don't need a TV. You don't need a computer. And you don't need electricity. The only things you could ever need is food, water and a home. But you have a TV. and you have a computer. And you have electricity.

So by having three, you have three things that you do not 'need' but you have.

So this means you justify that things that are not needed does not necessarily mean things are not useful.

And because of that, the world will continue to have TVs, Computers, Electricity, Air-Conditioning, and yes, Video Games.

So you can try to get the world to relinquish all that it's achieved. But it won't and can't be done. Also, it would be best, if you attempt to put the blame on the Arms Industry. After all, senseless violence requires weapons. If the world has no such things as guns, or rockets, or missiles, or nukes, nobody is going to be able to hurt each other. And when it still happens, it just proves that violence will always be present so long as people cannot accept certain things.

Sincerely.

S. Leonhart

Dear Mr. Thompson,

As you have seen most points have already been covered by the previous (who it must be said are better with words than I am anyway) people. I would just like to add by pointig out again that video games don't have the effect of inspiring them to murder on the majority of gamers, as a matter of fact any that I can think of at this momment in time. For example I spend most of my free time playing video games (almost to the point where some would call it unhealthy) and yet I am, in my opinnion at least, the least violent person in my class at school. One must remember that there are games that aren't violent at all and even when one takes into account the number of children around the world who play them, the number is so large that in the few isolated cases where people believe video games are to blame for a certain person's behaviour may other factors must be taken into account. I just wanted to give you somehting to think about.

Eagerly awaiting a reply,

Matthew Shannon (Vitrolic).
