So much for doing a good deed for the day. Although it did spare her the wrath of the wind cells, she was still detained in a rather cold and dark cell with her plane kept as a trophy. They never knew about her glasses doubling as her P.E.T., but the had the smarts not to attempt anything since they likely had signals all over this place.

Being an obedient captive, she never knew that the Navi's she saved in the desert belonged to the Underking. Still, rules were rules around the criminal land, and she was an outsider who entered their territory. Her cell at least had a somewhat comfortable chair brought in as she merely waited with her legs crossed for someone to show up and tell her what they were going to do to her for trespassing. Smart enough to keep her mouth shut while they worked, she sighed, wondering what they would do to her.

Death would spike the ire of her parents and a manhunt of all Mafia members would occur under her brother's direction, no doubt. She was worth something, that was for certain. Right now, she looked more bored than worried as she leaned her head against her hand as her elbow rested on the arm of the chair.

Around nightfall was when Lydia was to have a... Special visitor.

It was quiet, cold, and dark in the pit. Most of the pit's inhabitants at this point were starving, tired, and just in a miserable state of despair. Because of this, the sound of someone walking towards Lydia's cell. His shoes made soft tapping nosies as he approached, the light of the tip of his cigarette being the only illumination as to his face. This man clearly knew the area better than the back of his hand, since he was operating blind.

If Lydia was of those who had a keen sense of smell, she could probably detect the smoke as it wafted through the area.

Giving a small cough, the visitor flicked away his butt, and stuck another in his mouth. He liked these Dunhills. Quite good, they were.

As he reached the entrance to Lydia's cell, he raised his lighter and lit it, illuminating his face fully for the first time.

"Lights." He said, and the cell suddenly flared into brilliance.

"Now, please, tell me who you are and how you happened to come here?" Nick said, a cool look on his face, not unkind, but no warmth or kindness there either.

Her bored gaze was returned to the gentleman in front of her. Her own three-piece suit was a little dirty, but because of her swift surrender and relinquishment of her rented plane, she wasn't roughed up at all. Her nose slightly wrinkled at the smell of smoke.

"Lydia Hamilton, slightly estranged daughter of Captain Humphrey Hamilton. I picked up a distress signal from two Navi's in the desert and they just happened to ask me to drop me off at Zozo. Little did I know the Navi and his brother belonged to the Underking... hence why I was likely not thrown into some of the worse holding cells. Still, my family has protected the Net for generations, thus I am a suspect as a spy. I offered all of my data from the plane to see if they found anything suspicious and the only contact I sent was the obligatory legal message that I was making a rescue attempt. Hopefully you got their plane out of that area..."

She was honest at least. If something bad were to happen to her, it would be less likely to be death if she fessed up to everything that happened. She was a Civilian at this point with little experience, thus also not a huge threat to anyone here.

"I've heard nothing about a plane." Nick said casually, tilting his head. "So you're the one who helped drag Strike and Freedom here? Heh. Anyways, you don't seem like one to be much of a threat, and I have work to do, so come with me."

As he spoke, the cell door opened.

"Oh, but don't try anything stupid like running. People ALWAYS run. And I HATE having to make people clean up the mess afterwards. It's terrible on morale." He said, pulling out his PET and entering in information. "After all, we'd rather have a few new working hands... But you don't look like you could do hard labor.. Hmm..."

With that, he started to walk off, positive that she would follow him.

Arching an eyebrow about being released, she obediently followed the man with the power to free her. He had to be somebody to just walk in and open the door.

"This suit costs more than that cell you put me in, and it will already have to go to the cleaners. Do you really think I am going to add bloodstains to this?"

Her hands were loosely cuffed, so she kept them in front of her as she walked.

"I am from a military family, sir. Contrary to most rich families, I am not afraid to sweat... I just have morals and limits to that said hard work."

She would not yield to a lecher by any means. Nor would she just up and kill someone without good reason. Pride and honor were drilled into her at a very young age, as was being smart about her situations. She would rather take a hammer to a rock than sleep around with some official in order to win her freedom.

"That's the point. It's a jailcell. Luxury is not supposed to be one of the finer points." Nick said as he walked. "As for hard labor, you wouldn't last a day. Most men only last three. Then again, we are working them twenty hours a day."

Then, thinking things over, he nodded. "Hmm... Wealthy family means a high ransom. Good idea we didn't just shoot you. But even still... Something about you strikes me in a peculiar way."

Holding out his hand, he snapped at her. "Your PET, please. I know the 'guards' left it on you, so don't bother lying to me. Chop chop."

She stopped and raised her eyebrows, impressed that he was able to catch that her glasses were something more than what they were.

"Hmph... you are the premier crime organization for a reason..."

Removing her glasses, she folded it up and put them back in the electronic case in her pocket. Offering it to him obediently, but not without a slight scowl across her face. They now had access to her personal information and her Navi.

"I have a personal attachment to my Navi, so please leave his data alone. I know it is moot to ask such a thing in my position, but I thought I would at least put in the request. Though I must ask, what tipped you off? I programmed this to mask signals."

She was starting to become impressed with this man, putting one of her hands in her pockets and looking more relaxed. It was very strange how cool she was despite being a prisoner.

"Oh, I have my ways." Nick said with a grin. "Thank you."

Flipping through the pet, he nodded and mused. "Innovative design. Haven't seen one like this... Who designed it? It looks to be near GD standards in tech."

Finally, accessing the data on Phalanx, he observed the navis root coding. As in, one step up from binary.

"Hmm...." He said, scanning the information. "Immunity to fire... Useful... Useful."

They were now out of the Pit, and headed towards the apartment complex nearby, which Nick had made his own currently. "So tell me, besides being rich and military, does your family have any other little secrets? And talents that you have, please list them."

"My family has been Net Battlers of the highest form since its early conception. Arthur, the Navi handed down through generations will likely go to my brother. I have not had the honor of meeting him yet as father has been using him for his missions. Most of his tactics and use of battle chips are implemented in my style for Phalanx... I am sure the family secrets would be around somewhere, but they would likely send cash to free me before they even let anyone touch that. I shirked my "responsibility" to join the ONB for the sake of the family name, so I don't have access to everything they have. They were hoping I would join once my Civilian status was upgraded."

Crossing her arms, she sighed, deciding to let her own personal secrets out.

"I programmed that P.E.T. and my Navi with my own hands... five years went into that Navi after trial and error. I could create another Navi for you if you so desire... I am sure that would weigh a little better in my release. As for personal skills, I went to Culinary School after High School and I recently passed my three star exam a couple of months ago..."

She did want out of here, but the realism of that happening was slim and she knew it. Giving them something they wanted so that she could return safe and sound (without compromising her honor) would get her out faster.

Nick nodded. "Ah, that's good. But the PET itself. Who manufactured it? Surely not you..."

As they reached the apartment complex, Nick opened the door and immediately rushed to his work desk. He had things to work on. "Hmm... I could definitely use your skills. Maybe this will be more than just a simple ransom..." He thought aloud as he picked up one of his newest works and started fiddling with it.

"Software and hardware are my specialty. I merely replaced the back earpiece which would function as a hearing aid and made a microcomputer instead. I still have to jack it in to a larger computer, but I can still store my Navi and pick up signals. The glass to make the screens, however, was done by a high school friend of mine who works for a holoscreen company. He also helped with the wiring. I have to recharge the bloody thing every other day, though, hence why the glasses box has a battery set up. I would not be able to make an entire vehicle or something of that sort, but I could probably program its weapon systems with enough time."

Looking over his shoulder on his desk, she was curious about his own work. Weapons, maybe? Spying devices? She had a slight mad scientist streak in her and was naturally curious about new programs and the like. She said nothing, however, likely thinking that mum would be the word to an outsider.

Nick's desk was littered with half-completed projects, most of them in shapes not revealing to their purpose.

"Hm. Might have to get his name, have Global Dynamics hire'em. He's got good workmanship, really. High quality. Would he be willing to work for one of the largest corporations on and off Earth?"

Then, as the object he was holding sparked in his hand, he dropped it, cursed, and picked it back up. "Dammit, I'm really not sure if this is-" Suddenly, the square flexed in his hand. "HA HA! Success!"

Taking a small ring from the side, he slipped it onto it. After a few seconds, a loading bar popped up.

"It's a prototype PET I'm developing. Enhances the navi placed in it, flexible screen, quite a benefit. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the flexi-screen to actually work as a touch screen as well. AND I had to have it stay sealed, for various reasons. Hmm... Now for the programming."

Rolling the screen around his wrist, where it attached to itself as a sort of bracelet, he plugged several cords into it, and smiled as he started typing rapidly at the computer. "See, before I was.... What I am now, I was actually a scientist. A good inventor, and whatnot. Most of this stuff is my work. If you want to ask about something, feel free."

"If you can find a proper headhunter, I am certain he will not mind so long as you never drag him long from his forum games. Rodney could use to live the high life for once. We were never an item, but I tended to befriend the outcasts in school. My parents could care less about my social circle so long as they stayed out of trouble."

She lifted her hands to her chin as she examined the items with her eyes, looking at his prototype P.E.T.

"The glasses are not a touch screen either, but Rodney is also fairly well with air-hollo technology. It would require a bigger power source, but it might be easier to launch a Dimentional Chip that way. The launch software for that requires LTD fields, and with a pressurized air screen instead of a plasma screen, you may not use as much energy from your P.E.T. to launch. Screens tend to overheat a lot faster and the airflow of air-hollo screen will put more energy into the execution... though it will likely have to be a plug in. The smallest air-hollo screen I've seen is about the length of a windshield wiper. Still, the speed of the human hand is far greater than just typing."

If he trusted her enough to show her his private stash of inventions, then she had a feeling that he was beginning to like her. In what sense, she had no idea, but developing that 'shine' would prove useful to her. The fastest way to a man's heart was not through his stomach, but the ribcage. Reach his interests and he won't kill you.

She knew how to play social time in her circle. Adding this little gem, even as a foe, would widen her contacts. Surely this guy had friends... or even better... enemies who could become her friends if things got sour. She didn't expect it to, since he seemed to have a... soft streak for some things.

"Should I ask your name, or is it none of my business as your captive?"

"Well, I do have ideas for your glasses..." Nick said, looking up at her, his PET's bar half full. "Maybe a small camera in the corner of the inside frame to pick up eye movements, and register that way. Besides, who needs a touch screen for glasses?" He laughed at his own small joke, and went back to typing.

"Nichothedes Sayre's the name. Sorry I didn't introduce myself properly. I've been occupied with things."

"I had thought about something like that, but I would have to remove the signal protection software to make room for it. The high frequency verbal commands work well under my breath."

She tilted her head slightly at Nicho. Tapping her fingers against her arm, she raised an eyebrow at him and paced slightly in his apartment.

"Why... are you trusting a captive that you might ransom with your personal space?"

"Because, quite honestly, I feel a bit for you. I was sort of thrust into the same situation." Nick said, "I didn't WANT to be running this whole show, but at the same time... It's nice. Which is why I'm giving you free run of New ZoZo. You can't leave, though, so don't even try. I like you, and I don't want to have to add you to a long list of names."

Then, picking up the PET, he reboot it, and looked at it. "Heh, almost complete. Somewhat of a lucky charm, you are." He joked, looking at her. Then, pulling out his PET, he slipped his finger into the ID ring on it and spun it rapidly on his finger before catching it and scanning the newer PET. "Functional... Functional... Exceeding standards... Yeah, this works out quite well!" He said, laughing in good spirits.

Then, setting the pet down, he snapped his fingers twice, summoning a small trapezoidal robot that wheeled past Lydia's feet. "Take this to construction. It works perfectly." He said to it, before putting the PET into it's compartment and sending it on its way.

"So, since you're here, and will be until getting ransom... What would you like to do?"

Placing her hand on her hip and sighing, she knew that she likely would be sent back to the cell if she did nothing. Pacing with her head down, she made several moral arguments, trying to figure out how to get out of this dilemma. After a couple of moments, she paused and threw her hands out to her sides.

"Well... I doubt any other job other than becoming a criminal myself would help pay for that ransom. I can always claim duress from you people once my parents are able to pay. I will take the jail time until my court date. What price would you set on my retrieval, anyhow?"

She would never have to attack the ONB... there were plenty of Rogues out there which she could pound into submission. That, and she could improve the neighborhood of those she conquered.

"Hmm.... Well, if you were working to pay for your own freedom, it would change just about everything!" Nick said, looking at her, quite suprised. "Honestly, you see, it's all about my personal beliefs. I'm not such a bad guy when you look at me honestly... My history as a NetSavior proves it. It's just that recently, I've realized that society on a whole has a serious issue. It's really messed up, over various reasons, and my ranting on it would fill a book. What my goal as leader of the NetMafia is that I wish to weaken society, through both monetary crimes as well as those of a more... brutish nature, until the very capstone leaders are rotten to the core, weak as infants. Then, power could easily be exchanged to those who could do better with it. Me, maybe, possibly others too. So, honestly, if you were working for me, to pay off your debt, the more you did to help my goals, the better."

Then, pulling up various emails on the large screen mounted on the wall in front of them, he began cycling into his 'plotting' mind. "Now, I have two jobs for you... The first more difficult than the second."

The images on the screen showed Modmax in battle with other navis. Modmax himself was tinged green throughout, identifying his status as a criminal, while ONBs had their rank, and had similar tinge, this time red. however, a majority of the navis had nothing, only a slight grey tinge, and occasionally a number over the head.

"Rogues. Mercenaries. 'Bodyguards'. Whatever you call them, they're nothing more than hireable backstabbers. There are too many of them committing crimes not associated with the NetMafia. Your goal, job, and overall purpose for your time here is to try to both raise support for the NetMafia, by recruiting rogues, ONB, and occasionally a civilian. Furthermore, if any rogues are to deny any and all offers made, you are to pursue them with unrelenting and extreme prejudice. You are to target them. Go after the rogues. Make them join us. Ignore the ONB if you can, and only fight them if they insist on making your job difficult."

Then, clearing the screen (and his throat), Nick's face hardened, and bitterness filled his voice as various images, both of humans and navis, began appearing on the screen, each with text next to them.

"Tantalus. The name has many meanings, but most recently, it is the name of a criminal organization. Started about two years ago, it was led originally by Shiin, formerly of the Chaos Union. He was succeeded, or he installed as a figure head, by a Nation Z general and his puppetmaster navi, Nigyotsukaiman. After a crushing defeat by both ONB and opposing criminals alike, they fell apart, and were haphazardly mashed back together by a Mat Acora. Of course, after his supposed death, it drifted apart again."

Spinning his PET again, he looked over his shoulder at her. "Now I hear rumors of it surfacing again, this time as a more rogue oriented group... But lead by a NetMafian. One of the UnderCourt, too. I want more information. Research it, find out who they are and what they plan to do. Take no action against Tantalus itself, though if the individual rogues step in your way, do what you want, but inform me of everything. I cannot have this stand."

"Father is going to have my hide..."

Having both hands on her hips, she blew a stray blond lock from her eyes and grimmaced. His intentions were not ignoble, but a former Net Savior? Bah! He wasn't a horrible person, but the road to hell for the both of them would be paved by his good intentions.

"Better you than that swine Underprince. He and I have already crossed paths. Beasts like him have no place in humanity. I will... go see about spreading the word. Damn, I feel wretched..."

"Don't be." Nick said, pulling up further images, this time of various ONB. Some were beating up rogues and civilians (in spars, most of them, but Nick would never admit to that), others were blatantly carrying items like rocket launchers, handguns, and other weapons in public. Finally, the last was of Mike, Comissioner of the ONB, shaking hands with Taylor Steele. "These are all ONB committing heinous acts. Acts that I let happen, because I felt it was for the greater good. Actually, no. I didn't feel like it, I was told to feel that way and I did. They are the reason why I am where I am now, and, to be honest, I fully intend on going back to them once I am finished with my duties here."
