I just put a new set of Champion plugs, Morose blue max wires, MSD Blaster coil and stock cap and rotor in my small block Malibu. Ran great for one weekend, now has a occasional misfire from #4 cyl. I pulled the plug and it looks ok. I changed it with a new one and after short drive, miss came back. I tried changing plug wires between cyls and no change. Do you think its a bad cyl? I was told to check compression but it ran fine before I "fixed" it so I don't think its the motor. I thought maybe a bad coil? If so, why the one cyl? Ideas please! |

I do not believe there is any damage to your engine or compression problems. I would say it is a possibility but the car ran ok before the tune up. You did not mention any spark plug readings for oil, fuel or other deposites. The problem manifest after a plug change and coil, cap rotor change. Is the cap free of damage? You mentioned swaping plugs and wires between cyls and problem would reappear shortly after. Sounds like wires & plugs are ok. A Blaster coil was used, but you did not mention if you used a ballast resistor. If you did, my advice is to remove it. Factory built resistance into the coil positive on many cars & the ballast resistor lowers the input voltage too much. This defeats the purpose of a high energy coil & you will only lower the lifespan of the points to 30k miles. (provided you are still using points. If not then no problem omitting the resistor. Did you check ignition positive wire for 12 volts? You may have a weak positive from the ignition switch, but again, the car was fine before you " touched it". Try the above basics & let me know what you find... Mike |

Hay Mike, I think you nailed it. I was using a stock points distributor with the Blaster coil and, YES, a ballast resistor. The coil instructions said it should be used with points but no other information about it. Anyway, I took it off and NO MORE MISFIRE. I drove around a better part of Sunday and it ran solid the whole time. You said points life would be shorter without it. Is there anything I should look out fore because I'm not using it?
