Shade of Grey

Story: 9/10 The story was great, especially the end.

Music: 10/10 The music was Pwnsome. Kudos to David J Franco

Graphics: 10/10 Uses sprites, but I like sprites.

Controls: 10/10 Smooth controls. Very Basic.

Gameplay: 10/10 Classic Platformers

When I first heard of this game I really didn't care much for it. I assumed it was just a gimmicky RPG. I was wrong, this game is no gimmick, and no RPG. It is actually a very challenging platformer.

This game is the most fun I've had on the Nintendo DS in a long while. If you are a fan of the Mario Bros or any of it's spin-offs (DK, Yoshi, Wario, or Peach) this game will make you feel right at home. Now granted this is not a Mario game, but it stays true to the mario principles, jump, kick, collect tons of coins, search for hidden passages. And thanks to it's design features you can create any hero your hearts desire, even Mario, luigi, peach, or yourself :o

Design Features:
So lets talk about it's design features first. You don't have to be an artist. You can draw a stick figure and it works just fine. You can use as little or as much art skill as you want. Sketch with your stylus or use the grid for pixel per pixel accuracy. You don't just draw your main character you also draw weapons, platforms, vehicles, obstacles, and tons of other stuff (Don't worry, you will be recognized for it at the end credits). So let your imagination soar or pick a theme for all your creations.

Story Mode:

A big part of this game is it's story mode. Story mode occurs in between stages. It gets annoying after a while since you can't advance stages until you perform the neccessary sidequests, but it will be worth it in the end. Now for the story, there was a Village where the Raposa lived, the raposa are these strange almost Hamtaro looking creatures. Among the village there was a very distinguished rapo named Wilfre. He was very respected among the Rapo, but he didn't understand why he wasn't allowed inside the Creation Hall, a temple only for the creator himself. One night he sneaks into the Creation Room and draws into the Book of Life. His creations came out as shadow creatures & not as he designed. Angry that he couldn't create he rips the book to shreds and tosses it's pages into the wind & leaves the village. After the Book is destroyed the village goes through tough times becoming a cold & dark land that forces the Rapos to move on. The mayor's family are the last remaining in the village. As they prepare to move, the mayor's daughter Mari is contacted by the creator who sends them a new Hero to restore the Village. Oh and did I mention, YOU are the Creator.

The Creator:

It's funny the Creator is *** to the Rapos, and being the creator helped me understand what it's like to be ***. No matter what you do your subjects are never happy, they always ask but never thank, and if anything goes wrong they blame you for it even though you had nothing to do with it. For example; It's cold and they want the sun, You give them the sun and now they are hungry, you give them food and now it's too hot, you give them clouds but now they wish for night, you give them night and now it's too dark for them ::mad Half the time I wanted to smite them, have them feel my wrath. But where is the love in that?

The Game

Ok now to speak about the actual game. First thing first, this game is not short. That been said, it's only 12 stages long. Don't worry, those 12 stages are epic and will keep you busy for a long time. Each world grants the Hero special powers so each level is different in it's own way. World 1: Basic abilities + SnowShooter, World 2: Basic Abilities + Wings + Exploding acorn shooter, World 3: Basic Abilities + Scuba Sult + Homing Star shooters, World 4: Basic Abilities + Giant Hero & Basic Abilities + Sword.

What are the basic abilites? Jumping, Ground Pound, shoving, Flip Kick, Run Slide, Dash, & Uppercut. The last 4 moves must be unlocked so good luck.

So in each level you must jump, kick, run and fight your way through crazy levels filled with cleverly hidden passages. You must find in each lever 3 Rapos, 4 Pages, 3 secrets, and 100% shadow goo. Good luck finding it all. In addition, to advance in each level you must stop and create items to aid you in the stage.

The End

Don't Worry no spoilers. But the end really pulls the game together. The final boss was so tough I needed a cheat code to beat him, and I haven't used cheatcodes since Banjo-Tooie. The final cutscenes made me choke up a bit. Oh and it had a great song, 'The End' by David J Franco, google it. :D

Overall: 11.0/10.0

The game is awesome and i reccomend it to everyone. The game truly went above and beyond my expectations. II wish I could give it a higher rating but a lot more features could have been added, like a wifi feature to trade designs, that would have been sweet. But it didn't. Perhaps the Wii version will.

So yeah, great game filled with adventure, mischief & even love. Play it, you'll laugh you'll get angry, you may even shed a tear, I did. If you don't play it you won't find out if Cookie & Isaac will ever agree on a price for Mayonnaise, or if Officer Cricket ever captures Thief ZSasha, & Will Isaac tell Mari he loves her before she is too busy being mayor, Or will he leave on an adventure and leave Mari by herself, and What the rapo is wrong with Mike's ears?! GAAAAAHHH!!! THIS GAME IS SO AWESOME! PLAY IT!!!
