So here we go, I'm letting it all out of the tank with this one. Starting with the Aoshima FJ40 hardbody (no Bushwhacker for me) and a BB-51 chassis. The fit is amazingly good, like they were made for each other:

Posted Image

Only about 3/4 inch of the frame shows below the rocker panels. I'm keeping the full interior.

Posted Image

Painted the body Tamiya AS-14 Olive Green (no more short-bus yellow) and did the grille in white.

Posted Image

Added some body armor:

Posted Image

Since I'm using all the interior, there's no room for even a compact tranny like an R2 with an outrunner, so I decided to use a divorced t-case and GD-600. The t-case is a cut-down Pede tranny with a Jato input shaft, coupled to the GD with TLT cups and bones:

Posted Image

Converted the dash to left-hand drive and moved the wipers to below the windshield, and made a t-shirt for the driver. He seems upset about something.

Posted Image

And no FJ would be complete without the frame poking out the front, so I made an extension and front bumper, with tow hooks out of brass.

Posted Image

Axles will be RC4WD T-Rex 60's, tires are Geolandars, wheels to be named later.

Much more to come. Stay tuned.

Saw this on the other boards, and didn't comment.

I figured I'd save the comments for this place.

And with that I have this to say, awesome so far Stu!

The T-shirt is made from silkspan paper, used to cover model airplanes. It's cut in two parts, glued on with CA and painted with Faskolor. The Faskolor makes it shrink a little and conform some to the body. Enough to make it look like a T-shirt anyway.

Gotta upload some more pics to imageshack, I did more cool stuff last night.

Well, here's a little update.

Made a swing-out tire/jerry can rack, with a tethered pin so I don't lose it on the trail.

Posted Image

Then I whipped up a luggage rack, with reverse lights.

Posted Image

Then just for giggles, I turned down some TLT shocks, made some sleeves with brass tube, and painted them white:

Painted the luggage rack and loaded it up with a tent (tire foam wrapped in nylon) and a water can.

Next up is a carbon-fiber canoe

Three layers of cloth (inner is a carbon-Kevlar weave) and four ounces of resin. This may be the strongest part of the rig:

Posted Image

Then, I added some 4-inch PVC pipe to stash my fishin' pole in:

Posted Image

And, I got some wheels from createacrawler. These are without a doubt the awesomest wheels I've ever used

Posted Image

They're a modular wheel, so I can change up the backspacing, offset and overall width to suit my whim. Troy was kind enough to include some extra wheel halves.

Well, I got sick of waiting for the T-Rex axles, so I rolled a set of spares (Hi-Lift front, TLT rear with lockouts) under it and started to roll on this thing before I forget I own the thing.

Posted Image

Axles go under, with a mostly-parallel 4-link that frankly I don't like, but there's no room for anything else up front (maybe a Panhard bar) and I chopped the link mounts off the rear so deal with it. The inboard shocks (TA02's pictured here in the back, when I thought I had springs that were strong enough to hold this hog; I've since changed back to the TLT-KYB's in a droop setup). The links are weak, 4-40 allthread just isn't up to a 20-pound rig with a brushless motor. Anyone want a steel pretzel? I got 8 of 'em

Posted Image

Junk in da trunk. The receiver is under the dash, along with a servo (the one that looks like a CB radio) to turn the steering wheel when the wheels turn. But it doesn't work; it just binds up. Gotta make a real steering column next time I take it apart.

Posted Image

Drinking and driving's bad, mmm'kay?

Posted Image

All the flex it's got

Posted Image

Scale flashlight made from a model-car headlight and some chrome sprue

Posted Image

The swing-away, does.

Posted Image

Outside, it drives pretty nice. It's no crawler, with a severe rear weight bias, too much weight up top and high gearing, but it's a lot of fun to wheel. Not as tippy as I feared, and fast enough to be entertaining

Posted Image

You can't really tell, but the headlights are on. A separate 6V pack runs them.

Posted Image

Yay, I found some mud!

Coming soon to a trail near you.

Time to show the piggy a little lovin'

Posted Image

Added limiting straps (charity red shoelaces I got at the London Marathon) :D so the tires don't bind up in the wheelwells anymore.

Posted Image

Now there's a little clearance, and the thing can actually move as the suspension cycles. Still plenty of flex as you can see.

Posted Image

Added a Wild Willy winch with one of EtypeR's delrin fairleads. I'll add a servo next time I take the body off, which is a major operation.

Posted Image

Bungee cords and toolbox

Posted Image

Shot a little flat clear on the windshield. Looks like I need a new wiper blade :D
