Wasn't sure whether to put this in the manga discussion or just the general board, so...I posted it in general. xD According to the Nabari LJ comm, some people believe that Nabari no Ou is just Kamatani's "self-satisfaction" manga (or in some cases anime). Does anyone here agree with this, based on the final chapter, the new guidebook and the -al fine- drama CD? Just out of curiosity. :/ I personally don't agree. I think Nabari is a beautiful manga as it is, and I think that the -al fine- CD is a great ending for it. I also adore the anime. I have never encountered an animanga that managed to keep its title as "my favourite __" for as long as NnO has, which is almost two years. x: |

Well eventhough i havent read the final chapter and new guide book or anything (since i cant read japanese..) i have to disagree! I think nabari no ou is a master piece and i absolutely love it! I really enjoy both the manga and the anime and eventhough i havent been able to finish it yet, it will still be one of my favs. |

I'm not exactly sure what self-satisfaction manga means. Can you explain that term a little more? |

I haven't read the last chapter/volume yet, nor the guidebook, and I haven't listened to the CD, but nevertheless. I don't agree with the "self-satisfaction series" and whatnot. I mean, it's an awesome series, and how would she be satisfying herself with it when it doesn't obsess constantly over one point? It has a nice flow to it, so there really isn't any room for this "self-satisfaction" stuff. That's my opinion, at least. @ Phones: I'm not 100% sure, but I can give a vague definition. It's where one is somewhat selfish and seeks to do what pleases them, and not necessarily what pleases others. |

Oh, I see! Didn't JK Rowling say that was how she writes Harry Potter? I do think that it took her a long time after Yoite passed to get her stride again with the writing. Like she didn't know what to do without him. I don't think that this would be self satisfaction if she gets affected like that. |

I agree. Shounen Note is more like her self-satisfaction >_>. |

I suppose she deserves a self satisfaction after likely breaking her own heart a million times writing Nabari! |

Honestly this just means that how well Nabari is written shines through. |

As a writer, I really, really see nothing wrong with "self-satisfaction" writing. It's important to write what you want to write and to write what you would like to read. In fact, writing for your own self-satisfaction is the humblest way to approach writing-- after all, you're assuming that you're the only one who is ever going to read it! Plenty of awesome mangaka indulge themselves in their series--- goodness, just look at Fumi Yoshinaga. Pretty much everything she's ever written has had gourmet food, law mumbo-jumbo, gay men, or some combination of the three in it no matter what the demographic is supposed to be. So... while I have no idea if Nabari no Ou was written with self-satisfaction in mind (only Yuhki Kamatani would know for sure) I really don't care either way. |

I couldn't care less what "self-satisfaction" 100% means, but the mindset that these people are saying this in feel wrong to me. I don't think we can judge Kamatani-sensei on this one, especially when the plot was so darn long and intricate. Hell, if it was really just for self satisfaction, she could've just ended it with, Yoite died, Miharu feels heartbroken, no more Shinrabansho. T_T Honestly, she probably wanted to bring Yoite back too (because who wouldn't), but didn't... |
