Look here.

In short, as the description says: Sonoma County, CA officials separated an elderly gay couple and sold all of their worldly possessions. More details at the journal.

Please please PLEASE spread this wherever you can to get the word out. If we work together, we can do something to at least prevent this from happening to anybody again and to raise awareness.

You can also share your opinions or talk about your efforts and general thoughts about gay rights below.

I'm just...I can't even put into words how this makes me feel. I sincerely hope the county gets sued to kingdom come.

And just....they can't get that time back. 20 years and a lover. Gone. Even if everybody makes an effort to help Clay, Harold is gone. They'll never see each other again on this earth. It's irreversible.

I mean, how cruel do you get?

EDIT:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/04/15/hos...dex.html?hpt=T1

President Obama has asked the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a rule that would prevent hospitals from denying visitation privileges to gay and lesbian partners.

Well, thankfully some progress has been made. Regardless, only one issue (visitation) has been addressed, so we have to keep working to get the other issues (selling of their possessions and house, ignorance of their will, and then some) addressed as well so we can make sure that this situation is prevented from occurring again in its entirety.

EDIT 2: Here is a petition to can sign if you think the local news should raise awareness.

That's....that is aweful...

And exactly why I hate America's "ideal" and government. I hope Clay gets most of what he had back, but he can never get his partner back and THAT is just....UGGGHHHH!!!! *shakes fist at California*

I bet the Christian zealots would jump on that story saying "Well, the county was right and they were sinning so this is God's punishment." YEAH, STFU!

*throws things in her anger*

@Kirvee: At the same time, I don't want people attacking "Christian zealots"...

Not everybody's like that. A hell of a lot of them, but not all. Because I am Christian, and well, I posted this. XD;;

There are just a lot of people who like to hate in general. The Christians tend to be more outspoken is all |||OTL

Eh, not that I'm trying to disagree with you.

....what I think I'm trying to say is...

Instead of picking unrelated people to be angry at due to past actions and reactions, I think we should just focus on trying to help? I hope this isn't offensive or anything ;;

@Kuma: Ah, I know, sorry. I wish I knew more Christians who actually see past the Bible, but I don't. =(.

I think what I was saying was that the people who basically hump the Bible everyday will be praising the county while the logical/moral/sane Christians will be defending Clay. Did that make more sense? XD.

Yeah =(.

It just ASTOUNDS me that after TWO civil rights movements, America really needs a third one to achieve equal rights for all? I mean, really? Talk about "learning from the past"....

@Kirvee: Erm.

I'm sorry, I have to correct you again lol orz. It's more of an issue of people picking and choosing what parts of the Bible they want to believe/follow. Homosexuality -is- an established sin, as they love to point out. However, it is also established that -God- is the judge, and we are only to love our neighbors as ourselves and walk in love.

So we are supposed to look past the homosexuality and any issues and reach out to them and love them anyway, because God loved us despite all our sin.

@Kuma: Ah, we'll have to agree to disagree, as the Metaphysical half of my belief teaches that love, no matter what, is never a sin.

But yeah, I know there are people who pick and choose what to believe from the Bible, which is exactly why I don't listen to it. All I need is God and Jesus, I don't need a book that was written hundreds of years after Jesus' death.

@Kirvee: Oh, no, I'm only saying that the issue isn't that the "Bible humping" Christians can't see beyond the Bible, but more that they're picking and choosing what parts of it they want to believe. Technically, even according to their own beliefs, they shouldn't be pointing fingers, but they ignore that in favor of believing selectively.

Edit: And I didn't see your edit before I posted. Oh well.

....I could get into a long discussion about this but I really don't want to so.

Let's just spread the word about this article, yes?

President Obama has asked the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a rule that would prevent hospitals from denying visitation privileges to gay and lesbian partners.

CNN isn't the greatest news source, but rest assured things are getting better and hopefully things like that won't happen again.

Regardless, as a gay person, stories like these make me glad to live in Canada.

@radio: I know about that already too, lol. I'll add it to the OP.

But the issue is, that wasn't the only problem. Their possessions were also auctioned off and their house was sold. This rule will not cover that.

And I'm appalled at the fact that it was even necessary for the President to establish such a rule. What state is this country in that hospitals would deny visitation to partners just because they're the same sex? How hateful can you get to separate an elderly couple and ruin their last times together, just because they're gay?

@Kuma: I have to agree. That's just... asdjlkgajslkdglaskdg -sobs- I heard that story earlier, actually. The night I did, I was crying while praying. It was ridiculous and I couldn't believe that... I mean... that's just... -sobs- Yeah, Christian too. (': Yey for thinking the same. Love, in its purest form, can never be a bad thing.

I find it ridiculous too that they need to establish that kind of rule. What kind of biased, heartless people would refuse them that right.. just because... I mean, that's inhumane.

@La Radio: Glad I live in Canada too. :'D Proud Canadian!

@Kirvee: -hugs- ;A; I can't believe some people. The people who separated them... I don't know what gives them the right. I. Really. Don't.

@Kuma: There's no way they can ever make up for this. No one deserves to die alone...

I know. It sickens me, the cruelty of humanity.

THERE IS A PETITION YOU CAN SIGN IF YOU THINK THAT THIS SHOULD MAKE THE NEWS TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS.

@Kuma: I don't like getting in religious arguments either cuz it unneccesarily pisses people off I don't mean to piss off.

But fyi, my mom is one such religious zealot (my dad too, but not as much as her) and she hates on gay people to the point that if I even try to buy a book on gay rights or gay issues in general, she'll refuse to buy it for me (this is a problem because I have no source of income, therefore can not buy my own stuff yet).

She doesn't even know I'm bi, and I'm never going to tell her cuz I know her attitude is such that she would kick me out (or worse, be encouraged even more to "fix" me).

We're in the exact same state we were in when women and other races had to fight for their rights. Like I said, we shouldn't even BE in this state after going through it two times before. But you know, IIRC, the Church was a major roadblock for those two movements as well....hm...

@Radio: OMG Obama actually DID something!?!? I was under the impression that he was going to pretend he cared about gay rights but never do anything useful like almost every other President has done.

But that's good. But like everyone else has said, it only fixes one problem.

@Chi: It may be bad karma to say this, but I really hope the people who made the decision to do that to those poor men get what they deserve. I think the most fitting thing would be if a similar situation but twice as worse happened to them personally. Karma is a bitch like that.

Holy fuck.

This is like, the first time I'm ever saying the f-word intentionally. Seriously. But I'm pissed off.

HOW could they have done that?? I won't make judgements, but I'd like to see how the county would feel if he was in Harold's and Clay's shoes. Seriously, this is just inhumanely cruel. I'm apalled at how insensitive--probably a bit of an understatement--the county was, and the people who didn't do anything about it. Seriously, JUST because you're a homophobe doesn't mean you should deny people of the ones they love!

Sorry, ranting. *goes off to sign petition*
