Well, I'm re-researching since I found out a lotta this stuff a very long time ago.

One problem is, many parts of the Bible were originally written in Aramaic, not Hebrew or Greek. Yet it's hard to find the original texts for reference, and even harder to find people who can translate it. So keep that in mind to take even Hebrew or Greek translations with a grain of salt.

But still, there are a lot of ambiguities where you may think you know what a word means by definition, yet it changes in context of the history of the time. And I'm not a history expert, I only know bits and pieces. So I have a lot of blanks to fill in before hitting full understanding.

This video has a good summary of a few distinctions of re-translations: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvYdG5_vcB8

And this site goes into TONS of detail, taking into account history, translations, and it displays theories from Conservative to Liberal to everything inbetween and then some, so you can form your own conclusions:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_bibl.htm#menu

Sometimes what isn't said, is just as important as what IS said. But, like I said, without historical period context, it can be difficult to realize that.

If you get right down to it though, there's plenty in the Great Book that is outdated, whether rightfully or not, by the changes of society. Indeed, at the time, things functioned differently and often HAD to be the way they were.

Or, those writing and preaching the Bible at its time had to choose their battles. If they got TOO revolutionary at the time, then everyone would think it was crazy and wouldn't believe in the word of God. Telling people back then to let their slaves go or treat women equally or cook pork better so it would be edible with less risk of disease, would have seen God-following and Christianity disappear before it even began.

So they had to condone some things that were wrong. And condemn some things that may not have been bad, but were associated with Pagan rituals.

It's not an issue anymore. Society became "ready" to see an end to slavery and to see women on equal footing with men. Frankly, much of it is "ready" to see homosexuals the same. I guess the fear is that eventually all sins will be waved off, so many cling to the old ways to keep that from happening. But to simplify things, as long as the Ten Commandments are held to, then things can never get too bad if you think about it.

Personally, if I'm going to Hell because I haven't burned any witches or sacrificed animals on an alter, then so be it. I'm so blasphemous. :P

Lots of the passages were letters, so we only got half the conversations. And some group of humans decided which documents to include in the volume, and which to discard. And many discarded texts very well could have been the "real" truth, and some chosen texts may be totally off.

The Bible may be the word of God, but it's the word of God as written by HUMANS. And humans are fundamentally flawed. So by all means, respect it as a great guide, but don't worship it, and don't hold everything it says as the only Truth.

The 10 Commandments were literally set in stone, and Jesus clearly wanted love and peace. You can't go too wrong with these.

@Za: That's what I TRY to get my mother to understand! She thinks everything the Bible says is fact and I'm like "No, no it isn't!" because of the stuff you said.

It's interesting to note, though, that the Dead Sea Scrolls (which are believed to be missing books from the Bible) have texts that go into great detail about the humanity of Jesus and his marriage with Mary Magdalen (which I personally believe to be the truth).

@Kiwi: Twirble's 30?! I feel like that's a lie...

Lol. Well not that being 30 is a bad thing, but I'm not sure anyone, unless they were actually older, would lie about that. XD
ote more than one body of text at a time on this type of forum?[/SIZE]

It is a lie, I never share my name age or other personal info online because I had my identity stolen once and I am still suffering the repercussions. (Or I am one of those who gets depressed when discussing her age.)

Thank you for posting this article; I am glad that where I work we don't let people get away with crap like that. I do wonder if there isn't more to the story, but I totally believe situations like that happen all over the country and remain under reported, like intersexed people having their marriages annulled.
