Recently I have returned to the cold and lifeless devoid reaches of space known as Sins of a Solar Empire. Knowing quite well that I suck (a LOT) and not even bothering to play online it has become moderately repetitive, the fun kind though. Fooling around and killing the computers with ludicrous strategies (massing light frigates with full fleet cap) is always fun, but the dreams of a space roleplay in such a game have drifted back into my thoughts. All the materials are supplied to us! Set up time is nearly nonexistant and play time is endless! (Online save games! Woohoo!) The only downsides would be once a game is saved we would have to remake each time with the same people and the fact that not everybody has this game. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out the website here. (Yes, the graphics are that good.) The Races: Sins has 3 distinct races (to a point) that you can play as. TEC: They are the generic newbie friendly, really easy to play humans and my favorite race. They excel at making inexpensive warships and upgrading them to be hardy, as well as resource allocation. I would expect the TEC to be the most played. Their super weapon is the Novalith Cannon capable of severely damaging any planet. Advent: Religious fanatics with powerful psionic abilities. Their ships generally have fast-firing laser weaponry and in warfare they focus on swarm tactics with carriers which have higher capacity and many helpful upgrades.. Their ships have less hull strength and more shields than average, but generally higher damage output than TEC. Unlike the TEC who focuses on economy though, the Advent focuses on culture, meaning it's difficult to take an Advent planet and make it your own, and they can cause overthrows on your own planets. Their super weapon spreads their culture to a target planet, causing all sorts of problems. Vasari: Aliens fleeing from some other aliens or something like that. I don't know much about the Vasari because I haven't played a game with them all the way through. They're expensive, powerful, have the ability to move ships quickly between systems, and their super weapon destroys everything around a planet (More useful than destroying the planet itself IMO) However, as I've seen, they're very difficult to start a game as. These guys are all about war. Firstly, we could use the game as a story, going through and playing the game like normal, but with established rules to make it more enjoyable. Or secondly, use the wonderful Galaxy Editor (it's free and, as I've seen, easy to use) to make our own galaxy to RP in, this includes already established empires and that sort of thing. Advantages and Disadvantages. With the first option set up is easy, and garners a little more freedom for people to run the course of their own empire (if that's what they want, roles can be changed easier than one might think.) The second option requires someone to make the map (which can be tedious) using the input of those who wish to join in on the RP, this will be very specifically oriented towards those who request things. Roles! (Not rules those come later.) These are just a few potential roles that one can fulfill, have any ideas for some? Post them! Empire: Quite standard really, build, expand, control, that sort of thing. Mercenaries/Pirates: Take over the role of the in game pirates and have others pay you to anonymously attack someone else, or if your target has a better offer, turn on your employers! Play this however you want. Big Business: Don't like fighting? Love money? You could always focus your endeavors into wealth! Replace the in game Black Market with something a little more legit! Of course, you'll have to have a military force for protecting your assets, but nothing too major. Rules! (Not roles you just read those.) These are just a few potential rules that are here to make the game fair and fun for everyone! Like roles, post any suggestions you have! 1. Stay in your role. That means, if you're mercenaries you won't necessarily be colonizing planets, nor will you be conquering anything. Same goes for a company. 2. Do NOT kill anyone's home planet, this means they lose and won't be able to play, instead the conquerors can subject the losers into servitude. The losers can react how they watn though, if the governing player doesn't manage them, they may have an uprising on their hands. 3. Respect other people's roles! Mercs won't conquer, don't conquer mercs, they're there to be neutral, and unless they attack you, don't attack back and certainly don't go after the home planet, that sort of thing. 4. Don't just randomly attack people without roleplaying it first. The only exception is Visari that is because they're aliens, and regarding them yes, you can randomly attack people, however being aliens you can expect the humans to gang up on you. The other two races are the TEC and Advent are both humans, though VERY different. 5. Be as realistic as possible yet still think outside the box. There are 3 races to pick from, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to follow their story, in fact I would encourage you not to. Characters? Capital Ships are similar to Heroes in Wc3, they're extra large, a limited amount of them, very powerful, level up and you have the freedom to name them whatever you want. They are the "flagships" and would most likely be the people you are roleplaying as. Again, these are just suggestions and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I truly believe that there could be an excellent space roleplay done on Sins with proper rules and the proper people. |
