What specifically is it about the songs you like that makes you like them? For me, lyrics play a big part, and I enjoy a song that has a meaningful verse in it. Passion is another big part, that's why when I see an artist choking back tears while singing, I respect them so much more. I also like a good beat and tune (who doesn't though to be fair), and the biggest kicker for me is being able to relate to the lyrics being sung. I have a lot of songs like this, and I like them all the more for it. Contribute now, people. |

i really like a good hook, there's nothing worse than an album full of songs with no memorable parts (i'm looking at you, new incubus album) also a raw, almost de-tuned, sloppy punk sound. and a distinctive voice. |

Back on that lyrics point I mentioned, does anyone else have that? Like, they hear the lyrics to a song and it just resonates with them? |

can i just put it out there, she fucking butchered that song. it's supposed to be a fragile song, full of emotion, where you can hear the cracks in the singer's voice, straining through the emotion. it should be raw. that cover is completely devoid of any conviction. what a piece of shit. |

Everything plays a part to me, though. I guess, just make it memorable. I guess I just want substance, I suppose I would have to talk about songs I LOVE as opposed to like, because I could write a million word essay describing what could make me enjoy a song. And with those songs or albums, I guess they just make me feel something. Feel something beyond just listening to music, it could cut to my core with raw emotion, make me so powerfully jubilant around my surroundings, that really make me think about things, or just give me a feeling inside of, I don't know, content? Music that makes me feel in a way other things couldn't. I suppose I could go into further depth with examples etc. but this is getting tl;dr you know? |

I was actually thinking about this earlier today. It really depends on how I'm feeling. There are some times when I just want to listen to something where the vocals are just terrific. Then other times I want something I can jump around to and sing to and not feel like, oh shit I'm absolutely butchering this. But if I'm just listening to something for the first time I listen for an interesting tune without a ton of repetition, just something pleasing to the ear. Then some good lyrics (if it has lyrics) that aren't about stupid bullshit. I love it when a song comes on that completely embodies what I'm feeling at that moment. I think emotion from the singer is definitely really important, and it can make a song really great. |

When every element of the song works perfectly, and the music touches you on an emotional level (ANY kind of emotion) and just makes you think "now this is a good song". It's difficult to explain it. When I write music, I like to create music that can connect with people on an emotional level. But it's difficult to explain how to do it. It's like writing a novel in a way - music has to grip the listener like novels have to grip the reader. Good lyrics are certainly a contributory factor to a good song, and it's always great when but are certainly not essential. I listen to Rammstein and Finntroll, who sing in German and Swedish, respectively. I understand very little German and virtually no Swedish, but it doesn't make me enjoy their songs any less. Also, listen to this song - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qlMP3L0jJc - an album intro song by Nightwish which is sung in Finnish, and excellent proof that you don't need to understand the language for it to be a very emotional song. |
