Agreed.. some of my best buds smoke. And they're good people. It's just for personal reasons that's all. And they always keep their distance and suitable places to smoke. |

I should have phrased this better. Whenever I tell people I hate smoking I don't say I hate smokers. I don't think people who smoke are disgusting, I think smoking itself is disgusting. |

I just don't like the smell that seems to permeate everything around a person who smokes a lot. It gets like embedded in them. |

anyway cigarettes are shit and will probably cause you problems in the future, anyone who thinks otherwise is in denial. Anyone who thinks they have to smoke because it's the social thing to do needs to reconsider their priorities. both my living grandparents suffer from smoking related shit today, even though they both quit before i was born. I'll never touch the stuff. Edited by BURNOUTFREAK, Aug 20 2014, 03:52 PM.

My dad used to smoke and now he has a touch of emphysema, and my great-grandfather died from throat cancer. I can't smoke anyway because of meds i'm on for blood pressure. |

Dude who do you think you're talking to? Everybody knows the repercussions of cigarettes, and the 'problems they cause in later life' aren't being ignored due to some perceived invincibility, but because they believe the short term effects of the cigarette outweight the possible negative effects it could have in the future (whether this be through direct thought or instead through foregoing the stress of not submissing to addictive effects). We'll have to wait a while to whether or not they were right Another interesting point is the way that cigarettes seem to be an 'acquired taste', where you can simply ask why acquire something that will probably have negative effects in the end anyway? This is an odd one, and I haven't thought about it much. Same goes for coffee and tonnes of other shit: Are the experiences you get from acquiring a taste for something worth by the effort and the possible negative consequences? tl;dr smoking smells bad, idgaf if you smoke but I probably won't like how you smell, burn stop acting like you're trying to pitch 'cigarettes are bad' to a 1980s crowd |

idk i just feel like everyone reads the cigarette warnings, and everyone knows what the effects are but they don't really internalize it. Sure everybody hears about car accidents but when you're actually in one it's different. Suddenly instead of being something that happens to other people it happens to you. I had something like that on a smaller scale when the doctors thought I had Cushing's Syndrome (a syndrome usually caused by a tumor in the adrenal gland). Turns out I ddin't but the week waiting for the test results felt like hell. I think hearing about it more actually desensitizes you to it. |

McDonald's is bad for you and can cause you serious health risks as you get older. Why don't you get angry about that instead? There's so many things that, like smoking, have negative effects for a person as they get older. Why specifically talk about smoking? Everybody knows it's bad for them. If they want to having a fucking cigarette let them. My grandad died from cancer and I smoke a lot. Fuck it. I'm gonna die anyway. I fucking enjoy smoking so why shouldn't I do it if I want to. |

i've never smoked a cigarette. Can one of you guys that smoke explain to me what positives you get out of it? Like does it just relax you or whatever? Everyone always says stuff like coffee and fast food have negative effects too, so smoking shouldn't be singled out. But with coffee and fast food I know what the positive effects are - coffee gives me some energy and fast food sometimes tastes good - and so that outweighs the potential negatives for me. But with smoking I don't know about the positive effects - all I see are the potential cancer and the smell etc. Maybe if I understood the other side i'd be different. |
