Just like the good old days...party like it's 1999!
I am just now watching the local news, and apparently they couldn't get anyone from either company to talk, so they interviewed the guy that owns the Japanese restaurant downstairs from YouTubes offices...

Having heard "Frankie" for the first time - thank you for the pointer - I can't believe that Beth has the brass neck to claim a full writer's credit for "God Song". Still, I suppose it's nothing new for the old-timers to be ripped off by the modern generation, is it ? |

Wow, it gets pretty sticky trying to find out who actually wrote Frankie in the first place. Frankie history In Beth's defense, during interviews for "Daybreaker" I do remember her talking about where she got inspiration for "God Song"- she never claimed that it came off the top of her head. She did indeed give a shout out to the fact that she had sung "Frankie" for the Hall Willner shows and wrote it from that. And, if the song dates back to oral circulation from the late 1800's, well there is no one to receive royalties anyway! There are so many different versions at this point too- google for the lyrics and you won't find 2 that match! |

There used to be a song way back when called Frankie and Johnny. It has that song in it's roots. There is a line that goes; "He was her man, and she was doin' him wrong." And vice versa. At best, Beth shoulda gave credit to 'traditional.' Perhaps we can research that tune and come up with the truth. Methinks it lies somewhere in Mississippi delta music...It has that feel to it. |

This page gives a good indication of the complexities involved in tracing the roots of 'roots' music! http://bluegrassmessengers.com/master/frankie1.html There's already a hundred years of history behind this one famous song, which Beth has given a new lease of life to (twice over now)! [Oops! I missed your post, Kathleen! Looks like our researches took us to the same swampy place!] |

Couple of bits... "I'll tell you a story about 'God Song', and how that came about. I was doing a Harry Smith project. You know Harry Smith? The folk anthology? [The seminal three volume The Anthology of American Folk Music]. They wanted me to do two songs, and I'd been busy, and the day before the gigs, the CD arrives, you know, the folk anthology, and the idea is there are particular songs they want me to song. So I tried to put the CD on, and for some reason my CD player decided to break that day. So all I had was the words, and the chords at the top of the page. I had never heard the song 'Frankie And Johnny' before. 'He's my man and he keeps doing me wrong', is the chorus. So I just had these words, and I just made up my own melody. And I sang it that night, and I was like, "Fuck I Love this,' and I was like, 'I'll just do a cover of it, 'And then I was like, 'Oh, fuck it!' And then I heard the original, and mine is nothing like the original. And I was like, 'What if I wrote my own words to the chorus?' So I started just messing around in my own time, not for anyone else, not for any reason, but for my own thing. And then I was just more interested in the idea of he's my man and I keep doing him wrong. And now, maybe this is my answer to that song, maybe this is me being Frankie. Maybe, maybe, I'm the modern-day Frankie and I'm just admitting that actually I'm doing him wrong, or maybe he is God, and maybe when you reflect on someone, you reflect on your relationship to God. And... I don't know... If you want to get really into it, there is a literal sense in what I'm saying, but what I'm saying is also really not literal. It's kind of a ... I don't know... I just really get into all that... For me, it's like this on top of this, that underneath." http://www.beth-lehem.com/lyrics_dy_07.html “The Harry Smith people sent me four or five songs I might sing,” Orton remembers. “I chose ‘Frankie and Johnnie,’ but as I so often do, I put off learning it to the last minute. When the deadline came, my CD player wasn’t working and all I had was the lyrics and the two chords. So I just made up my own melody. Then I took that melody and made up my own verses, my own modern-day slant on the story. It came so easily that I realized what a natural progression it was from British folk to American country.” http://harpmagazine.com/articles/detail.cfm?article_id=1661 |

Thanks for that, Sam. Seems I read that same article before. You found it on Yap's site? I think so. If all this is true, this is exactly how traditional songs come about. Beth didn't know the melody so she changed it to fit her. That is exactly how songs evolve. I just saw Peter Frampton on TV yesterday, and he sang the song "I Don't Need No Doctor." I've heard several other artists do it several other ways. This is just that...evolution. |

Speaking of plagiarism, it appears Barbra Streisand is now ripping off Beth's act, telling an audience member to "Shut the fuck up!" Beth should sue!

Typically enough, the same day my copy arrives. Can honestly say it was now a COMPLETE waste of money. The Bono thing was alright though. Martha Wainwright's song is awful. I fast forwarded 2 or 3 tracks though |

Sorting out some old VHS tapes from my loft, found Beth's appearance on the Big Breakfast show, interviewed by Melanie Sykes, in a cafe/market with a basket of mustard. |
