Not to eclipse http://forum.bethorton.org.uk/index.php?showtopic=1452 !! but I thought I might chip in the 3rd good bit of news (well, good news for me!). I had an interview today with the "Institute for the Blind" in my home town, and I was offered the job earlier this evening. Effectively, I will be the head of the department, and aside from the usual IT stuff that comes with IT jobs (i.e. switch it off, and switch it on again!), I get to teach the workers IT stuff, who have a wide range of disabilities, and get them up to a qualification standard (CLAiT); develop some systems to help them out (databases and that), effectively re-design the website, sorting out where the money goes, and all of the other sort of stuff a dogsbody gets to do! It's a charity organisation, and I am really delighted to be working with them, as they have just moved into a bigger premises, with the shop-floor workers actually constructing all sorts of things with the furniture industry (and looking at them, they are very good quality, but are having problems with imports ... I did hear the term "cheap shit!". I have worked in IT with a different charity before, and this is basically my ideal job ... multi-faceted, and giving help to other people, who have had considerably more problems than I have. Just depends on my referees now ...

Went to the JobCentre today, and the Army were there going "Be the Best" ... now T-Mobile just told me I didn't have the qualifications to sell phones, Microsoft said I didn't have the qualifications to answer the phones, and the Army want to let me loose with a machine gun? | |

Hearty congratulations, Ade! That is good news indeed, and not just for you, but for all those people you are going to be helping. If your referees know you like we know you, how could they possibly fail to deliver glowing reports?! Best of luck, mate! (I reckon you will always land on your feet, whatever.) |

Go get 'em. Ade. Tell them if you can teach all the pinheads on this board,(like me) you can get through to anybody. I like your approach to teaching, and no matter how stupid the questions might be, you always provide the right answer. Good luck. |

Congratulations!! And this will keep you out of trouble...I've suspected your light posting the last few weeks means you've spending time in Ipswich, based on what I've been reading in the news!
Seriously, that sounds like a good fit for you. The upside to non-profits not having a lot of money to throw around is that you get exposed o a lot more and can demonstrate your ability to make tight resources go a long way, which is a skill that can pay off in future jobs!

Yeah, I only have to keep out of trouble from now on!
This is extremely important to a charity organisation, and obviously something I told them when I got interviewed! It's about getting value for money ... spending the money on specific packages when they are needed With the training, I suggested using OpenOffice, which saves about £2000 a year for something this size. Also, the last guy they had was a bit taken with some package that cost them $xxx, which I can, hopefully, turn around, using the same sort of skills as I already gathered from a few things such as my, (sort of running) Beth website (there is alot going on on a server-side level, which people might not appreciate). Good learning project, that was! edit: http://www.bethorton.org.uk (might even partially work!) Still have to transfer directories over, so it will take a while for 100% working! Anyway, I am going back, and will be having XMas lunch with everyone in the company next Wednesday, and I hope it will fit me well. Met the staff, and the workers, today, and it is definitely agreeable! |

Cheers guys, This means so much more to me than the interviews I had coming up at M$ and Hewlett Packard in Bristol. Obviously, I get to stay in my almighty WALES!! to start with, but it's the rest of it that is more important. P.S. Mike: I have finally seen that your (now old) MSN avatar was a jar of Vegemite! I think I prefer your new one
