This has probably been done, but, Ive been thinking bout past shows lately. So, what was your most memerable/ weirdest concert exp. including even the planning stages etc? I went to see the Grateful Dead in Iowa,Des Moines, in dec. of 82. Very small place, bout 2500 cap. Long sold out. We thought we would try anyway. Got to the theater and had to sit by the ticket window all day with about 250 other completely fried heads(Madison the night before) There was a rumour that some tics would go on sale maybe. Well, bout an hr before show time the window goes up and there is a mad squeeze to get there. I was shuffled back a bit and didnt have much hope. AS time went by, I was getting closer and was getting qiute excited as well. Soon there was 1 person ahead of me. The tic lady told this guy the next 2 tickets were not together, diff rows etc. He turns to me and asks if I want them! Holy shit! Of course, I just want to get in the door! She sells me the tics and immediately closes the window. I turn around am facing the quietest bunch of burned out heads ever. Had to make my way thru bout 150 ticketless tour heads w/ the last 2 tics to the show. God what a show it was too. (But that is another story) |

I gotta think my concert experience tops them all. A lot of folks will not believe this, but I'm sure if you did some research you'd find that I'm telling the truth. It must have been around 1972 or 1973. My friend Al used to get to the Ticketron outlet on Monday mornings before his first class at Purdue/Calumet. Well, he happened to get us two tickets in the 2nd row at the Auditorium in Chicago for Jefferson Airplane. The concert was great. All the heavies in the band were still there...Jorma, Jack, Grace, Paul, and Papa John Creech on violin. Well, Grace was in fine form, and liquored up to the max. She was drinking 16 ounce Budweisers like a champ. The drunker she got, the more beligerant she got. And the more she agitated the crowd. Someone in the crowd said something, I'm still not sure what it was. But it was all she needed, as she bent over and pulled her long black dress up over her head, exposing her bush to the crowd, and God, and all to see. As God is my witness, I am not making this up. I'm not a liar, and I stand by what I saw. The guys in the band were dumbfounded, and I fully expected a cop to come out and pull her off the stage. Nothing like that happened, but I do not recall very much of the rest of the show.

She wrote about it in her autobiography http://www.twbookmark.com/books/35/0446523...excerpt352.html My best concert memory was the first time I went on the barrier, and I got three bruised ribs, my ears were ringing for four days later from the support act, and the entire right hand side of the front 4 rows fell over in the crush. I always book my ticket on the internet, but recently I booked some tickets for a concert when I was too drunk to remember that I did it, and only found out because I got the tickets through the post! |

Went to the JobCentre today, and the Army were there going "Be the Best" ... now T-Mobile just told me I didn't have the qualifications to sell phones, Microsoft said I didn't have the qualifications to answer the phones, and the Army want to let me loose with a machine gun? | |

Stupid cold FEb. 78. Skipped school for a road trip to Iowa to see the Dead. Bout 30 miles down the freeway we stopped to pick up a hitcher(you really could do that then). We were 3 kids in a red Maverick, big jug of red wine, small pink things, and a big bag of seasoning. Asked him where he was heading, said Arizona, to get the f#$% out this cold. WEEELLLL we is going to rock to the boys in the band tonight. By the way, we have a couple of extra tics, need one? Let me think on that as he pulled a bag of his own blend out. 40yrs later he asked if we would like to trade for a tic. Why sure, barter system rocks. The deal was made and then he says enough of that second shelf shit. 140 yrs later we arrive at the venue. Gen admission, scooot down to the floor, right in front.Holy shit, what a show. Made Dicks Picks Vol.18! Anyhoo, after the show, we deposited our guy at the freeway and decided we should take all back roads home. About 45mins later rounding a sweeping curve we were confronted by a dirth of cops , rescue vehicles, tow trucks, etc. OOPS! to late to turn back! We slowed as we should and noticed a van in the ditch upside down. Bummer. Then we saw the SYF on the door. We slowed even further when we saw who was standing by the side talking to the cops. There was Bob Weir. Holy Crap! What should we do? Hey Bob, need a ride to Minnesota? No, we have it under control now. Okie dokie then. See ya tomorrow night. Bob had a solo show next night in St. Paul. Me, I made back to school in time for the bell.

Isn't it amazing what goes on at concerts? And a lot of these things have to do with San Francisco bands. Perhaps its got to do with them being a lot like their audiences. Another strange thing that happened to me concerned a Florida band...Spirit. It was at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, which just happened to be the worst shit hole to have a concert at. Randy California, God rest his soul, was out front before the show copping acid. He had some pretty good shit, too. By the time that show let out at 3:30 AM, there were kids sprawled out on the hoods of cars, and puking in the streets. Not a pretty site. I think the Chicago cops were more concerned with getting people out of there than making any busts...but God knows there could have been a number of them. By the way, where is Ali? With all the shows he's been to, surely there must be at least one memorable one. |

Okay, you have to tell us exactly which search terms you used to find that!
Hey, that had better be meant as a compliment! There is an excellent book, San Francisco Rock 1965-1985 that covers all the great bands (as well as some forgotten and forgettable ones) and has some great pictures of all those folks back in their heyday, and before their heyday (e.g., the pre-Airplane "Great Society," and the pre-Dead "Warlocks", etc...). If I get a little time and can squeeze the book onto my printer/fax/scanner, I'll try to upload a couple of pictures! |

One cannot but love the Airplane, but in my book The Great Society were even better! There are few sixties bands that mean as much to me as those guys! <- Darby Slick!(Btw, my day began at 7am today with a chat about Grace Slick with a friend of mine on Myspace! She really has haunted my day, but who's complaining?!) |

Jorma lives on a big farm in Ohio. Every year he holds seminars on how to play his style of guitar. My good friend Scott attended one a few years ago, and Jack Cassidy was there. Scott's wife Stephanie had to move their car for some reason, and he saw her walking back and talking to some old man. Turns out he was Arlo Guthrie. They all had a big hoedown while sittig around a fire. He said it was better than any concert he'd ever been to. On the subject of Grace...and I think Ali and Sandad can vouch for me on this...she had the same effect on guys back then as Beth does now...if that makes any sense. I could not imagine another girl from that era that I'd want to be with than her. She was one wild chick indeed. |
