Yesterday afternoon I was upstairs watching tv and Mama was in the basement reading. I heard a loud "ka-chunk" and Paula shouted. I asked what that was, and she said a bird hit the window. Well, we have birds hit the window all the time, but nothing of that proportion. I looked outside, and there was a rather sizable bird laying there. He was knocked out cold, and was barely moving. I determined him to be an American Kestral...a bird of prey about the size of a small falcon. I let him lie, and went in the house, checkig on him every few minutes. Soon, he was moving his beak, and turning his head a bit. This was when I called my friend Jeff, who knows wildlife like the back of his hand. Just when Jeff pulled up, the bird rose up and flapped his wings and headed right for a large white pine in our yard. He landed about three quarters the way up, and after talking to Jeff for a few minutes we headed off to find it. It was up in the tree lying on the crotch of a big limb, when Jeff said he thought the bird was dead. It moved again, and headed for another tree. This time it got into a roosting position and stayed there. This bird was wounded. Jeff stayed a while, and we checked on the Kestral one more time. I got up this morning, and after a cup of coffee I went out to find him. He was gone. Not a sign of him, and no bird on the ground. I will go out and check another few times today, but let's hope and pray that "Kelly" makes it. I will keep you all informed. Rob |

If you are short of birds, I have some crows I would like to box up and send to you. Noisy, obnoxious little buggers, and they seem to scare most of the other birds away when they come around. |
