I just got told I had to go to hospital as I dropped a printer cartridge on my foot, and it caused a bit of a swelling and some blackness, on an already existing injury. It's in the accident book as well. So I drove (yes, that's how bad it is) up to the surgery, and they have given me an appointment for tonight. No way am I spending 4 hours in a queue for such a crappy injury! I probably wouldn't have bothered, except because of my existing illness, foot care is essential. Of course, everybody in the office knew about it before I had walked back upstairs, and so the embarrassment was the main benefit about getting out of there. |

Went to the JobCentre today, and the Army were there going "Be the Best" ... now T-Mobile just told me I didn't have the qualifications to sell phones, Microsoft said I didn't have the qualifications to answer the phones, and the Army want to let me loose with a machine gun? | |

On the other hand, be glad that they are as precautious as they are. Back in 1998 I broke my heel when I fell off of a transfer car. I was denied workman's comp by a doctor who was nothing more than a company stooge... all the while I could not put pressure on my foot. I would go through with that appointment, even though you may not consider it a problem at the moment.

Quite right ... I got a load of antibiotics (at least I can show them I wasn't faking it in work) and some painkillers. |

Surely one thing I found out in 30+ years of working was to always cover your tracks...and to always get things documented. That way, if anything would happen to go seriously wrong you would be in the books, so to speak. |

Do you know, I've just been thinking about how our policy stands up in real life today. When I went to the accident room, there were 5 people in there including a cleaner, and someone who operates the band saws; people were told before I was ready to tell them (the majority of the office knew before I had told them) ... now what if it was a diabetic problem? there is no more right to spread about what happened than if I had, for instance, HIV. When someone told a trained first aider about it (directly in front of me), she surmised that it might be because of poor circulation because of my diabetes; I have perfect circulation, and she announced it in front of an open room. By the time I left the surgery, every single person in the company knew. Do you know, I am getting quite annoyed at this, because I know we are a very professionally run company, but exposing holes like this makes me wonder. If I can keep people who I like out of the fire, I might bring this up, as I am a department head. I wouldn't drop people in it for the sake of it, but there are some severe failings here. I do have to work with these people though? Advice? |

Here in the states we have privacy laws that forbid people in that woman's position from talking about your situation...because of that very problem. For instance; If I were to ask a nurse or doctor how you are doing, they would not be able to answer me. This might seem a little problematic, but in the long run it is designed to protect the patient. Revealing something personal about one's health could prove disastrous. And I think you also see where they are going with your diabetic condition. If they can place blame on a pre-existing condition, they will do just that. |

i used to work with a bloke that had HIV and i didn't find out about it until i'd been at the job for a few months, honestly i was a little freaked out by it. Part of my job was doing first aid and the idea of doing first aid on a person with HIV scared me a little. But you can't catch diabeties so i think its a little different, people who need to know should but it should end with them. |

I should have pointed out that I have only revealed to three person (our FD, and the man opposite me, and the canteen lady - so she doesn't put sugar in my tea) that I was diabetic, and it's got throughout the factory. Anyway, my anger has subsided into disappointment; but I think it needs to be addressed on Monday, because of the leak. The point I was making about HIV is that any first-aider should be aware of the condition, but not have 5 people in the room, including cleaners. And it should have not got any further. |
