Just wanted to vent some steam over impending Maths prelim (Thursday)and my inability to make the slightest sense of the subject. Bloody algebra, dividing roots and raising powers to powerswhy do I need to know this shit? The P2 class I work in has enough problems with number bond to 20, it's unlikely that I will need to explain simaltaneous equations to them even when I'm in P7  If I pass this I'll be back on dispensing loaves and fishes to all, via a keyboard...rant over.

Cheers for that, I would ask, but I'm not sure where to start! Not too bad on some of it, but the Unit 3 stuff argh! Quadtratics, changing the subject of formula, trigonometric graphs are are the spawn of the devil. The only bit I can do if the thingy that looks like standard deviation but isn't (*the thingy with plus/minus). Might drop you a pm tomorrow if the tutor i have engaged doesn't get it through to me, cheers.

Howdy Streppy!, I am also around to help. My undergrad degree is EE. I've had up to Vector, differential, and multi variant Calculus (one I took from a professor in Cambridge, England). I'm rusty but can probably help. Also, a lot of great reference sites on the web. BR, Dave |

Cheers, Strepsil Junkie. The only support I can lend you is moral support. Math lost me about 40 years ago. I can see that you are trying hard, though. I believe that with the help you are getting from your tutor and the help from the guys on the forum that you will make it through this course. Alas, all this to work in a nursery school.

English lost me ... I completely suck at it. Scraped a B in English Language GCSE, and a B in English Lit ... bit worrying as I got an A* in French, and I speak English (of sorts) everyday
Anybody who can write at length, and with lucidity about poetry deserves some respect (and a slap) |

For what it is worth Streppy... Math is one of those subjects once you learn/master, it becomes part of you. Can't explain it, don't understand it either. It really is the least common denominator (no pun intended) in language. Heck, I can't remember but the months my children were born in, on a good day maybe the year if I do some quick arithmetic, but never the day. My wife has written the dates on a card that I carry in my wallet. But I can recite the quadratic equation from 20 years ago.... Go figure... Keep up the efforts... they eventually turn into accomplishments that you will never lose. Best Regards, Dave |

Bah. Just got in from the exam...did VERY VERY BADLY on paper one (non calculator) Not announcing the result as am too ashamed. However paper two went marginally better, though unlikely I will even remotely scrape a pass. Indices, changing subject of formula, surds and simaltaneous equations areas of extreme vexation. Oh and knowing when to use sin/cos. Basically all of it except volume, percentages and reading trig graphs. Am heartily disheartened. I'm a language person, logic escapes me. Am going off to bed with a good book to escape all this hideousness. Only thing keeping me going is the fact that last years paper was a stinker and SURELY they won't do that in two corresponding years... Have a glass of water on me, Ade.

That's disheartening to hear, Streps. ![]() Just remember, exams aren't everything, and maths is only a portion of the syllabus. God knows over the years you've been around here, we know you've progressed nicely enough anyway, so it's only a mere set-back in the grand scheme of things. And there's always tomorrow! And then the thing that is becoming more and more apparent these days, especially with technology - is that it isn't your fault for not understanding it, it's the person who is telling you, in whatever format, not telling you properly. Chin up, and don't forget to ask for help if you want it! Another way of looking at it, explained in a different way, might help you out. God knows I only knew how to write constructively for English by getting someone else to help me, as I was going nowhere fast with the teacher. |

Just a quick suggestion for your trig functions.... I learned the phrase 'sohcahtoa' to help me remember functions. Sounds indian and is pronounced 'sock ca towa'. Means: "SOHCAHTOA" is a helpful mnemonic for remembering the definitions of the trigonometric functions sine, cosine, and tangent i.e., sine equals opposite over hypotenuse, cosine equals adjacent over hypotenuse, and tangent equals opposite over adjacent, Arcs are easily derived... Every little bit helps....Hope this does. That is how I recall the relationship.... Sorry to hear about the test, but they are only tests...not reality (real world). I am a firm believer of basing the future on the past, but that is after you get out of school. Make your mistakes in school and learn. That is the way it should be. In the real world there are tangible costs associated with mistakes. Shake it off and learn from your mistakes. Move forward and you will be fine. BR, Dave |

I agree with your line of thinking...but what do cosines and tangents have to do with changing diapers and cleaning up after children?

Cheers for all your responses to this. I just need to get my head round some of the more complicated bits and try not to let it affect my confidence too much. I can understand to a certain degree why you need it for the teaching course, as primary teacher in Scotland could potentially teach up to 14 yr olds, however that is unlikely. It's the complete lack of relevence of surd denominators to everyday life that hacks me off. |
