Hi TJ...I don't recall any restaurant like that, but it doesn't mean it didn't exist. If I recall, 1970 was a time I don't recall much. My wife doesn't recollect it either.
One place in particular that I do remember was Swoboda's, and it was in Illinois on the state line. They were famous for having old nickelodians and stuff like that. If I recall, the games were much better than the food. Yet another cool place in that very area was called Johnny O's...at that time the best strip bar around.
My fav place in that area was Rob Roys... a great night club. Admission was $3.00 and you got your hand stamped so you could go in or out. All drinks were 25 cents. There was also a motel there, so if you got too trashed you could get a room for crashing in or sex or whatever. :boinky:
Still...I don't remember an airplane.

You know the old saying: If you remember the '60s you weren't there (and 1970 would be close enough...). It might have been someplace else, Fresno, Bakersfield, Indiana....all those flat places look alike to me! ;)

Back to the "American English" theme ..

I always have a sly chuckle when someone over here mentions that they "root for the home team". Slightly different meaning where I come from - hence the nickname "wombat", as in one who "eats roots and leaves" which can have a number of meanings depending on how you punctuate it.

Ditto "shagging" as in "shagging fly balls at baseball practice", which I assume means catching practice for the outfielders.

Presumably it's similar to "batting for the other side"
Went to the JobCentre today, and the Army were there going "Be the Best" ... now T-Mobile just told me I didn't have the qualifications to sell phones, Microsoft said I didn't have the qualifications to answer the phones, and the Army want to let me loose with a machine gun?

How about tea? To you guys its a late afternoon meal, to me its a foul tasting cup of hot water.
Now, about that chocolate cake? As you all know...German chocolate cake is the absolute end for me.

I think I should be able to have fannies AND German chocolate cake. Why have to choose?

Things I never knew---from today's "word of the day" email:

Quote:

This week's theme: words formed by contraction.

blimey (BLY-mee) interjection

An expression of surprise, dismay, etc.

[Contraction of "blind me" or "blame me", from "God blind/blame me";
sometimes heard in the form gorblimey or corblimey.]

Here's the definitive breakdown on the "Soda" vs. "Pop" vs. "Coke" controversy.

More here.
