I remember Ford Cortinas (and Anglias), and not just in my Matchbox collection. I don't think they ever really sold in the US officially, but back in the days before safety and fuel mileage regulations, I think you could order one through a Ford dealer or possibly buy them abroad and ship them here. At the "import car show" when I was kid they had them on display (as well as a number of other cars that didn't really sell here in any numbers above what you could count on your fingers). and the English Fords, along with certain French and Italian cars, were only bought by eccentrics or masochists. I remember having kept brocures for years for things like the Vanden Plas Princess and the Swiss luxury car Monteverdi, but unfortunately these all got tossed out along the way and now I don't have them to sell on Ebay.

And of course, let's not forget LeCar by Renault...quite possibly the shittiest car ever known to modern man. They had three lugs on each wheel, and drove like a mini lumber truck. What a piece of shit they were. |

I drove a Renault LeCar for a week or so back in the 70s, and I thought it was kind of fun, as long as you weren't in a hurry. I had a worse experience with one of it's big brothers, however: one of these spontaneously caught fire and effectively totaled itself while I was driving it. I guess that's what inspired the ad agency to show a guy dressed up as Tony Orlando taking his girl on a picnic in the warm glow of a nuclear explosion.

Jesus, I'd sooner not drive than drive something that horrific looking. Saying that, I actually CHOSE to buy this, in something that can be described as Claret / Burgundy ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Opel_Corsa_C_5-door.png Reliable (apart from the electrics), but kind of wishing I bought a Suzuki Swift. Next car will be a Lotus Elise, or Exige. Not going to do well on mpg, but it will be fun parking in a 12" window! |

Well AT THE TIME it wasn't that bad looking, and the retractable soft roof was kind of cool. I didn't own one, I just happened to be driving one when it self-immolated. If you want an Elise, you should instead be like your fellow techie billionaires and put down a deposit on a Tesla, which is based on the Elise platform and shares a lot of parts. I parked near a prototype last year, and that is one tiny car...I doubt I could fit in it! |

For all the shite Euro/Indian models out there, let us not forget that the good old USA is responsible for some really crappy cars, too. My old nieighbor drove an AMC Gremlin... an orange one, mind you , and an old buddy had the AMC Pacer...a really cruddy car. The Pacer caught fire after only 25,000 miles. I guess that was all it was designed to go. The Gremlin lasted for a long while, it's just a shame we had to look at it so long. Which leads us to the Geo Tracker...a poorman's SUV. After 75,000 miles, you'd better be looking for a junk yard to retire this baby to. A true "throw away" model. |

Last time I drove an Elise, I could barely fit in it. All well and good driving a sweet car, but if you look like a rem getting in it sideways, then there is probably not much point! Suppose the car isn't that bad, apart from that horrific grill at the back. I generally hate old cars though ... even the ferrarris and the Mercs. |

One of the more desirable sports cars is the Chevrolet Corvette. It's style and balls has made it a classic. But get into one of those on a long trip and you'll feel every bump in the road. A friend had one and his life long desire was to drive one cross country. it's a good thing he took the trip with the title to the vehicle on him. He stopped in Missouri and traded that bad boy in on an SUV. He said he was getting beat up in that Vette. |

All this talk of the Cortina makes me nostalgic! I learned to drive in Dad's '74 Cortina station-wagon - for some strange reason the Aussie office decided it would be a really good idea to stick in a 250 cubic inch (4.1 litre for the youngsters) straight-six instead of the 100 and 125 fours that came as standard everywhere else. Went like the clappers but so nose-heavy you didn't dare hit the brakes! |

I have a straight 6, 4.0 litre engine in my 98 Grand Cherokee. It is great out of the blocks, but a little iffy on the highway. Still, that engine is a beauty. Mine is over 10 years old and still going strong. It has over 138.000 miles on it, and shows no indication of failure. I don't see why it won't go over 250 thousand miles. |

I think our forum overlord should add a forum titled "Stolen Car" where we can discuss the pros and cons of various engine/drivetrain configurations (an Ali can show us the Ferrari he parks in that parking spot...)! |
