Now here's a thing!!! I recently bid on, and (only just) won, on eBay, a copy of Mean magazine (Issue 4, 1999), purely on the strength of the cover photo, which is that sexy pic of Beth with wine glass and fag in hand and showing her knickers, posted on the previous page, which I particularly like. I was more than slightly horrified by the fact that I was paying about fifteen quid (including postage from the States) just for a cover photo. So imagine my delight when I opened it just now to discover a full length feature on Beth, which includes such gems as: "Six feet tall and flat chested with pale makeup-free skin and shaggy brown hair that has not been chemically altered, she looks seriously out of place in Southern California." PLUS six more smashing photos, in which Our Gal is modelling various different outfits! Suddenly my money seems really well spent. Nice quality paper too! Now I expect you guys are totally familiar with all this stuff, but if not I am going to have to find some way of getting it on line for you! Edited by Ali, Jan 30 2009, 11:18 AM.

Sounds like you've got a real find there, Ali. I have that picture mounted on cardboard and covered in acetate. I think I got it from Go-Quickly. It would be nice to pop the wrap on it and have the goddess sign it. If not, it's still a real keepsake. I get a lot of comments from friends when they come to visit. |

That was the one from Harp magazine...the one Ali referred to is Mean Magazine. It is the one with Beth squatting with a cigarette in her hand. Under the name Beth Orton it reads "Seyengeist of the Times." Does anyone know what a seyengeist is? |

Think it means "free spirit", or something close. |

Went to the JobCentre today, and the Army were there going "Be the Best" ... now T-Mobile just told me I didn't have the qualifications to sell phones, Microsoft said I didn't have the qualifications to answer the phones, and the Army want to let me loose with a machine gun? | |

Rob is right about the mag, and what it says on the cover. Seyengeist is not a German word known to me (or babelfish, for that matter). I suspect it may be a misspelling of 'Sehengeist', which would mean, literally 'seeing spirit', or something like 'seer', or 'revealer' (of our times). The reason for the high price of the mag was presumably because it also has a Tom Waits feature, so I was bidding against Tom Waits fans too! The inside photos of Beth, which I may have seen before, are: 1 B leaning forward facing the camera, wearing a pale leopard-spotted short dress, legs wide apart with a radiator behind, big clock on the wall partially behind her tousled hair 2 B with glass of wine again, in chair, eyes concealed by white floppy hat, wearing long shorts, both legs up, one tucked up, the other stretched out, pink mules 3 and 4 Two shots of B wearing a dark T shirt with a huge angry tiger's head print on it, the first just of her torso and upper legs, with a red & white multi-strand bracelet round her left wrist, the second a gorgeous full face shot with upper body, also showing tiger's head and bracelet 5 B sitting on floor with knees up, shot from the right side, partially hiding her face from the camera behind a blank canvas, pale blue shirt, rolled-up navy jeans showing her calves, those pink mules again 6 B squatting in a little black dress, from the left side this time, apparently on a diving board over a swimming pool, holding on to the edge of the board with both hands and looking straight at the camera, with 'red eye', those mules again Ring any bells, you guys? That's one lucky radiator! ! & 2 ring a bell, but 3 through 6 do not, though I think I've seen the tiger shirt in other photos. Also, my German-English dictionary does not contain "seyen" but I agree it may have been met as a variation of "sehen," or maybe they were just making up words. Googling it only brings up an instance of adjacent woers "seyen geist" in a German-Swiss history book from 1721. |
