Ranting About My Radeon HD 4870 X2

Gah. So my Radeon HD 4870 X2 started to die. I created a thread on a forum I frequent about it, and it looks like a lot of people's Radeon HD 4870 X2s have been dying, and theirs shared the same foreshadowing behavior that mine was showing.

So I had to RMA it. Found out that the company that does RMAs (Althon Micro) sends back the same model you sent them, if it is in stock. Otherwise it sends something of equal value (or greater, by law). My card has been discontinued for a while now. But I am hoping for a Radeon HD 5870. I talked to them and they wanted to send the Radeon HD 4870 X2 to me, but as warranty is not renewed with the new card, I want to avoid getting back a card with a bad track record until the remaining warranty expires (August 2010). So I talked with them to see if I could upgrade to the Radeon HD 5870 for a "fee." They said they'd let me know once they got my card (it could end up that their stock of Radeon HD 4870 X2s is out, so I would just get the Radeon HD 5870 automatically). It arrived on Saturday, and they don't work weekends, so I guess I will hear from them later today (Monday), I hope!

Now there are other reasons I want this card. It's basically equal in performance, although edges out the Radeon HD 4870 X2 in some games. It's much quieter, and also runs much cooler. This is a big deal. My old card was a freaking oven, and sounded like a leafblower. Also, the Radeon HD 5870 has DirectX 11 support, which enables me to hold off on upgrading for a bit, perhaps until after Crysis 2 comes out, LOL.

My card was manufactured by Sapphire. Lesson to you all - avoid buying from them. They have one of the worst warranty policies. If you're going ATI, stick with XFX or ASUS. If you're going nVidia, stick with eVGA, ASUS, or XFX (newest generation of nVidia cards are not made by XFX). I should've cared more about warranty when I bought it, but didn't do much research on which company has good/bad warranty policies (as graphics cards really shouldn't be dying so rapidly). Our old GeForce 6800 GT OC was working into 2009 when it was last plugged into a computer - we bought it in 2004. Sapphire only provides two years of warranty.

But now I must wait, which pisses me off. I am an impatient person. It is also my summer break. I have time to enjoy my rig, and the GPU decides to be retarded. Turn-around time from the point that Althon Micro receives my card is 1-2 weeks. God dammit.
