All right, you louts, time for a history lesson. My name's Augustus, and I'll be your lecturer. And you'd better listen up, or I'll bloody well stab you, I will.

War's about to break out all over Magvel. You'd have to be some sort of moron to not see that. We've got Necromancers running around stealing Sacred Twins and trying to resurrect the Demon King and so on. They're a right bunch of assholes, I'll tell you that.

Yeah, and so what? What's this all about, anyway? Well, I'll tell you. In the beginning, the Earth was without form, and void. But that's a bit farther back than anyone cares, so let's skip to a couple hundred years ago, to the Stone Wars, which laid the foundations for the clusterfuck that's about to go down here.

Welcome to the world of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

Posted Image

Now, this will be just an introduction. We'll begin in earnest next time. For now, let's meet the major characters of our history.

Dramatis Personæ

Eirika
Posted Image

Ephraim
Posted Image

Our Lords are these twins, the prince and princess of Renais. They are the children of this guy:

Fado
Posted Image

The king of Renais. A General. King Fado dies at the start of the Stone Wars, one of the first casualties, when Castle Renais is unexpectedly attacked by Grado forces. Rather an odd thing, royal families were quite good friends. If you don't think that there's more than meets the eye here, go get a lobotomy and do us all a favor.

Vigarde
Posted Image

The emperor of Grado. General.

Lyon
Posted Image

And his son. The emperor's a hardass. The prince is a weak pansy, despite being a Necromancer. That's all you need to know for now.

Seth
Posted Image

A Paladin. This dude here is Eirika's retainer, who rescues her from the castle as it gets invaded. He's probably of Jehannan ancestry, although I don't think there are any records confirming this.

And now, Grado's Gemstone Generals. They're basically badasses of one sort or another, and the best Grado has to offer.

Glen
Posted Image

Sunstone. A Wyvern Lord. Generally a nice enough guy, who's not afraid to do what he thinks is right.

Duessel
Posted Image

Obsidian. Great Knight. Honorable to a fault.

Selena
Posted Image

Fluorspar. Mage Knight. Loyalty, thy color is orange! And thy name is Selena!

Valter
Posted Image

Moonstone. Wyvern Knight. He's one sick fuck. Just look at him. He'll kill your women, eat your babies, and rape you. He was a Gemstone General before, but was dismissed for being a sick fuck. And now he's got his job back. Life's a bitch, eh? He and I have a bit of a shared history, but I'll get to that another time. He's the one to lead the assault on Castle Renais.

Caellach
Posted Image

Tiger's Eye. A Hero, although there's nothing heroic about him. This guy's an asshole who'll do anything for money and power. Originally a mercenary, but as the Stone Wars started, he was brought in to help out and instantly rose to the top.

And the last of the Gemstone Generals.

Riev
Posted Image

Blood Beryl. Bishop, believe it or not. This guy's the worst of the bunch, if you'll believe it. Think Valter's bad? This guy's worse. Caellach is an asshole, Valter's more insane than I am, but this guy's just plain evil. Forget rape, murder, and eating babies. This guy would just as readily just eat the souls of all of the above as any of that. If you want proof that light is not synonymous with good, look no further than him.

And while we're at it, let's introduce the other leaders of the various nations.

Pablo
Posted Image

A Sage.

Klimt
Posted Image

A Bishop. Two members of Carcino's Council of Elders. Pablo's a dick, Klimt's a basically a pretty cool guy.

Hayden
Posted Image

Ranger. King of Frelia. Pretty friendly with the Renais royalty, but unlike Vigarde, he doesn't randomly go all "Take over the world!" for no discernible reason.

Ismaire
Posted Image

Queen/Swordmaster. Just accept the dual classes and move on. The Queen of the White Dunes, they call her. Queen of Jehanna.

Mansel
Posted Image

Pontifex is his class, and Pontifex is his title. The ruler of Rausten. Fun guy. His descendant once helped me buy a table, so this guy's all right in my book.

And finally, we get to the source of all our troubles, now and then.

Fomortiis
Posted Image

The Demon King. Fine, fine. Humans are the source of all our troubles. But this asshole doesn't help.

The rest I'll introduce as the history gets to them.

And that's the way it is. Any questions?

So you're back, eh? Excellent. Introductions ain't necessary here, so let's get in to the actual history this time.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

So, hope made people blind. The gods are assholes.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

And if not for them, old Fomortiis would have assraped us with a cactus.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Yeah, Grado was one badass motherfucker. Garm in one hand, Gleipnir in the other, kicking ass and taking names. If he saw his legacy today he'd weep at how his once-mighty nation had fallen.

Posted Image

Of course not. Peace never lasts. Lasting peace means everyone's deader than Latona.

So, let's take a look at Magvel itself, without all them fancy letters and lines. Just the land:

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

And with each Stone as its core, the five major nations formed. Each also keeps a pair of Sacred Twins, weapons used by their founders, and Grado's friends.

Posted Image

Sacred Twins are the Flaming Spear Siegmund and the Thunder Blade Sieglinde. Although they don't really burn or shoot lightning, so they're not all that awesome.

Posted Image

Sacred Twins are the Winged Lance Vidofnir and the Serpent Bow Nidhogg. Yet here there not be dragons. At least not in any significant capacity.

Posted Image

Sacred Twin weapons are the Ice Sword Audhulma and the Piercing Gale Excalibur. Ice Sword in a desert. I guess Grado's friends were going for irony?

Posted Image

Sacred Twins are the Holy Staff of Latona and the Divine Light Ivaldi. Well, finally, something that makes sense. I guess Latona wasn't gonna put up with any shit.

Posted Image

Sacred Twins are the Black Axe Garm and the Shadow Void Gleipnir. While Grado's nothing more than Renais' bitch today, before the Stone Wars, it was the world powerhouse. The Fire Emblem belonged to them, too. Rausten's got the Fire Emblem now, although it's a different one.

While only Rausten's Stone remains now, back then each of them still had one, and they kept the monsters and whatnot at bay.

Posted Image

While Carcino even today is distrusted, back then it was just an emerging nation, with not even a century to its name.

And it occurs to me that I had not actually given the date for the start of the Stone Wars. 200 years ago is rather vague. So here it is.

Posted Image

So, they've all been peaceful for 800 years or so, more or less.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

And this is why peace isn't a good thing. Everyone gets complacent, and the first asshole that notices that force works will easily open up a crate of whoop-ass on you. So Grado just rushes to the capital with no resistance.

Posted Image

And Ephraim, who's pretty much the only leader Renais had that was worth a damn, disappeared. Yeah, Renais is done for.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Front gate's fallen, garrison's fallen, Vigarde's troops inside the castle walls. Fun times.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

That's right, Renais just surrendered. Probably the only sensible thing Fado did, for what good it did him.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Renais's dead, and Fado's asking about bracelets. He just being loopy, or saying something significant? You decide!

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Seth and Eirika escape, and Fado stays behind. To die.

Posted ImagePosted Image

Outside:

Posted Image

Posted ImagePosted Image

Franz went on ahead. But the other two were just a bit too late.

Posted Image

Because here comes Valter.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Posted Image

Valter attacked Seth, wounding him. Seth is less successful.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

And so, Brave Sir Seth turned about, and gallantly he chickend out. And took Eirika with him.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted Image

They stop right before the border to rest.

Posted Image

But all is not well.

Posted ImagePosted Image

Bur Eirika decides to fight.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

So, where do our heroes stand? Here are the records we have of that battle:

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

As well as the Grado soldiers:

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

It would appear that Princess Eirika took Seth's Steel Sword, and fought herself, despite not using said sword. No records of the reasoning behind this strange move survive.

Posted Image

Posted ImagePosted Image

After weighing her choices, Eirika decided to attack the closest.

Posted ImagePosted Image

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

She hit him twice, but the Grado soldier was unable to land a single blow.

Posted Image

The enemy response came swiftly. They attacked.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Eirika killed the first one with ease. But the second was not far behind.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

After this, Eirika took to hiding in a nearby forest.

Posted Image

But O'Neill came looking for her.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

And he found her.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Records show that O'Niell was able to wound her, but it was minor. By the time of the next battle, all any wounds she received were inconsequential.

Posted ImagePosted Image

O'Niell broke off the attack, but Eirika did not let up. She attacked.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

This time Eirika broke off the attack, but O'Niell made one last-ditch effort to kill her. Reports say that his next attack would surely have killed the princess, but she managed to dodge the attack and deliver a spectacular finishing blow that one sees only in storybooks or theater. Whether this was an embellishment or not is not clear. However, it should be noted that the sources are not exactly unbiased, as the only people who witnessed that battle were the two winners.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Me? I say it's complete bullshit. These flourishes look fancy up on a stage, but in real life they're the quickest way to get yourself killed. Either that, or O'Niell was dumber than a lobotomized brick.

So, Seth and Eirika had a short discussion while they rested after the battle.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

I gotta ask, what was our little princess expecting? Sunshine, and daisies, and lollipops? Ach! It's war! People die. They bleed. They stink. But even so, soldiers live. Get used to it.

Yes, strengh is the most important thing. Strength of arms, strength of mind, strength of soul. You need all three to survive, to win, to conquer. Brute strength alone will simply get you killed just the same, so don't think that the world's all that bad. We cling to life because we realize it's worth fighting for.

Posted Image

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Well, she wasn't fully stupid, at least. Then again, if she were, we'd all not be around, so I suppose that's some consolation.

After this rest, they picked up their weapons and went on to Border Mulan. But that's a story for next time.

And that's the way it is. Any questions?

Back? Excellent. Now listen up. Prologue's done, so we're going for real this time.

Posted Image

We pick up at Border Mulan, where Grado troops are about to make an attack.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Posted Image

A Frelian soldier informed Princess Tana of the approaching soldiers. Of course, the border was weakly defended, and the soldier recommends withdrawal. And before we continue, let's introduce our princess properly.

Tana
Posted Image

The Princess of Frelia. Pegasus Knight. Eirika's best friend, basically. Doesn't seem to have been too smart.

Anyway, Tana refused to abandon Eirika. Then she got a brilliant, mind-shattering, unprecedented idea.

Posted Image

Genius!

And so he left for reinforcements.

Posted Image

As that happened, the Grado forces were making their plans.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

So he walked up to the fortress....

Posted Image

And he did just that.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Bloody showoff.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Real smart, Princess. Confront a guy in heavy armor and a giant spear alone. He'll obviously bow to the will of an enemy royal. Well, at least she told him who she was. She'd probably have been killed otherwise. Although I somehow doubt that was why she did it.

So, she gave this speech about how if he does anything her father and brother will hunt him down or whatever. I call BS.

So, she got captured.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Posted Image

Outside, Eirika and Seth have arrived.

Posted ImagePosted Image

Posted Image

Seth was a practical one. Of course, Eirika would have none of it.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

So, they attack.

Posted Image

Two people against full squad.

Our records say this about the Grado commander.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

The commander, naturally, saw their attack.

Posted Image

But reinforcements came!

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

And so, they joined the fight.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Franz and Eirika recognized each other.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

And he spoke with Seth as well.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

However, Grado reinforcements chasing Eirika also arrived soon after.

Posted ImagePosted Image

It was not enough. Eirika, Seth, Gilliam, and Franz fought them off and challenged the Knight commander.

Posted ImagePosted Image

And they won. Of course.

Posted Image

They rescued Tana, caught up, and then proceeded unopposed to Frelia's capital.

Posted ImagePosted Image

There, they met with King Hayden.

But all is not well.

Posted ImagePosted Image

Too bad. Renais is no more. At least until the end of the war, but that's for later.

Posted ImagePosted Image

But there is good news!

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Eirika decides that sitting around doing nothing is unacceptable.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

In the end, he relents. He cannot spare an army, but he can spare a few soldiers.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Before Eirika leaves, she meets with Tana.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

All good questions. And all will be answered in due time.

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Posted Image

So, Eirika, Franz, and Seth, accompanied by Moulder, Gilliam, and Vanessa, set off to find Ephraim.

And that's the way it is. Any questions?
