Veronica finished rubbing her eyes as she sat on the bench, her visit to the Velvet Room a dream that had apparently occurred in a split second. Her phone was still held in front of her, but after meeting Arke she wasn't sure she knew how to start her typing. It was probably related to some of the stuff the school was expecting to keep secret: that meant it could go in her diary but not her blog. "What the hell, anyway," Veronica said with a sigh, "I'm not here to sit on a bench and write to myself, anyhow! A new school, a new mysterious daydream, new mysteries all around to crack open!" And new fledgling journalists waiting to unleash their creative talent, the student thought to herself. "To think that Jung wouldn't have a school newspaper! Kooky antics must go on all the time at a place as special as this, and yet the information circulation is clotted! Tragic." By this point, Veronica had moved from talking to herself to loudly declaring the problem to anyone who would listen. "And what a tragedy that the soul of the journalist remains dormant in this kettle of potential! Think of the opportunities for exciting adventure and strengthening friendships that come in the package of investigative journalism! Why, the different things you would see... And all sorts of talents can be applied! Writing skills, computer skills, graphic design, leadership, an aptitude for picking up new skills..." Veronica figured she had said enough, and the rest of what followed was just rambling as she waited for a promising passerby to take interest so she could focus her sales pitch... |

Meanwhile, a lone figure was making her way through the girls' dormitories, at a significantly faster pace than a brisk walk. To Leslie, however, it was simply a warm-up jog, with a small chance of accidentally bumping into a cute girl and...well, wasn't the next part obvious? At any rate, she wasn't about to get lazy and let someone beat her at something. At anything. EVER. ...Though, based on the sounds of it, she might losing a rant contest with whoever that was. Mildly interested in both the reasoning of the spiel and the girl half-yelling it, she adjusted her route accordingly, stopping to jog in place as she listened. "...We don't have a newspaper? Huh." And that was all. Plus the girl wasn't quite her type. What a disappointment this detour was. With a heavy sigh, Leslie turned around and prepared to continue her exercise...before suddenly realizing something. "...Wait a sec. If there's no newspaper, how's everyone supposed to know how I win at stuff? This is an outrage!" Edited by MagicCereal, Aug 4 2010, 01:11 AM.

Veronica's excitement at having caught someone's interest was deflated as she quickly turned away. Before Veronica could come up with another hook to try and recapture the girl's interest, though, she seemed to have an abrupt reconsideration. "O-oh, right! The achievements of you and every other student in the school will go unannounced! If they are announced, it will be in a brief PA announcement! Imagine, your many-fold accolades falling on deaf ears as careless students make trips to the restroom! If you want the world to know you've won at something, the only way to have it presented is as a headline on the front page of a paper, right?" Hoping she'd poured on the motivation thick enough, Veronica extended her hand for a shake. "Hi, Veronica Mackenzie. I get the feeling we're both new arrivals here? I'm trying to recruit people to... um..." Veronica began to reconsider as she sized up her new acquaintance. She seemed like some kind of eccentric (who wasn't?), but the wannabe reporter hadn't yet put her finger on what kind. Either way, heavily muscled and seemingly single-minded... Despite all of Veronica's earlier praising of the different talents needed to build a newspaper, she figured pitching a position to this girl would be a waste of her time. Time to alter her approach. "Yes, I'm trying to gather interest in a school newspaper. Such a paper would cover school events and would naturally include a sports section," Veronica added, taking a guess that sports fell under the umbrella of things this girl apparently won at. "All I need you to do is sign this petition, for now." Veronica quickly produced the piece of paper. "It's possible I might need you to speak in support, but I don't see it being an immediate problem. Oh, I'm getting ahead of myself. Your name is?" |

"Yeah, really! I mean, victories are always better when it's announced to the entire world!" Though, geez. This Veronica girl sure was focused on this getting a school newspaper thing. Though she seemed to back off towards the end for absolutely no apparent reason. Leslie wasn't entirely sure she got that, but whatever. Who was she to judge? "Anyway, I'm Leslie Battle. And with any luck, you'll be putting that name in your paper a lot!" And...there. Petition signed. Surprisingly, the muscular girl had very nice handwriting. Stylized, yet easy to read. "So, what else might be in it? Sports are fun and all, but I'm pretty sure you're going need more than that." Hmm, what else was in a newspaper? Regular news, business news, arts and stuff news...maybe once it was established she could add some coupons for that shop she heard of. Veronica probably had it figured out, though. At least it sounded that way. And admittedly, she was getting a little curious about the whole thing. |

"Thank you very much, Leslie! Ah, and you have a competitive signature, the kind I'm sure people will be seeing in autographs! Maybe I should hold onto this one in case it becomes valuable?" Veronica laughed at the end, making it clear that this last bit of flattery was intended to be a joke. "Now, to discuss the newspaper further... the main content would probably cover school events, both recent and upcoming. Another section would be devoted to sports and competitions, and perhaps another to clubs and student highlights. I plan to be doing a lot of the writing and research myself, but hopefully I'll find someone around that can help me with the presentation, layout, and printing..." Veronica had been lucky to have the school club already set up at her old school, so she didn't have to personally seek the funding. Things could be a little more difficult here. "Oh, and there might be a section on politics for people who can't be bothered to turn on the news, but... I figure things might be more interesting here than what's going on in the world around us, hm?" Veronica was hinting at the strange business they'd been briefed about. She didn't want to get too direct with it, though, since she wasn't sure if she'd just dreamed up the whole issue in that blue room. Besides, she had a penchant for being indirect and dramatic when she got the chance. Regardless, she was happy that Leslie could apparently spare a bit of interest for her project. That was probably a good sign for the newspaper's future. Veronica thought about asking Leslie to take part as her first character interview, since she could sense there was something "dynamic" about her new acquaintance, but she figured that could wait until later. |

Leslie laughed a little bit at the prospect of her signature being valuable, partly because she kinda hoped it would be one day. And the newspaper seemed interesting enough. She'd probably read it, at least. But that last bit about things being more interesting here than the rest of the world...she couldn't really argue with that. "Tell me about it...going into other people's dreams and beating the darkness out of them? That's...kinda hard to swallow. But so far, everything seems to look like it's the real deal. If it's all true, you could probably write a whole book every week just about that." She really, really wanted that to come out as a joke, but it just didn't. Something was just too weird about it all. "I guess we'll know for sure soon enough, huh?" |

"Yeah, it's all too weird to believe," Veronica agreed. "I'm pretty open-minded, so I can buy the idea that these strange dream monsters exist and that students could turn into demons, although I'm not willing to take the latter at face value until I see some proof. But the idea that Jung's academy sends students to fight them? Like, with weapons and stuff? It's just too bizarre." Veronica remembered meeting that strange yet familiar creature called Arke in her mind, though... Supposedly, Arke was a part of herself. Was that what the daydream had been about? Was Arke some kind of weapon to help her fight the shadows? And if so, how on earth was the school influencing these changes on its student body? There were too many pressing questions and the answers didn't look imminent. "Well, I, for one, can't imagine how I'm supposed to fight when the time comes. I hope it makes more sense then... I can only imagine that the students will gain some sort of special powers or abilities, because I'm sure the school didn't pick me for any weapon training. Well... with all that, you can understand if I'm not exactly thrilled about my first trip into Jung's nightmares. If you had to fight, do you think you could do it?" |

"Well..." Come to think of it, how WERE they supposed to fight in people's nightmares? "...I dunno. But if it's really why we're here, I don't think I have much of a choice. I'll have to find some way...although, would they really let us do it if we didn't have some way to fight back?" Leslie had a feeling that that thing that lady did with the tarot cards she saw a little while ago had something to do with being able to go into dreams and not, ya know, croak in 5 seconds. "Well, dream worlds are probably really weird. It wouldn't be that far fetched if we actually did get some kind of power while we were in there, I think." Keyword being think. "I guess we'll find out when the time comes. But anyway, no point worrying about it before it happens, right?" |

"True, but that's easier said than done," Veronica replied with a smile. "Well, even besides that, I'm kind of interested to see what Jung's coursework is going to involve. I got the idea that the school must be part of some secretly-funded military operation and stuff, but so far everything looks fairly normal... Aside from, you know, that weird video and orientation. It looks like we'll otherwise be enjoying a fairly normal class schedule." Veronica realized she might be getting a little nerdy there, being excited about classes. "Well, besides the school newspaper I hope to get, I'm sure there'll be lots of interesting activities. Do you already have in mind what you're going to be looking for?" Veronica shifted on her feet before moving over to a wall and propping herself against it, her arms crossed behind her head. "I'm thinking of also going for one sport, but I don't know which... maybe track? It would be cool if we could get some ultimate Frisbee going here!" Veronica grinned, thinking of the signed Frisbee in her backpack and once again relishing the fact that she had a chance at a fresh start at Jung's. |

Veronica's phone went off immediately as she finished asking Leslie about her plans. Veronica raised a hand in apology to Leslie. "Sorry, looks like I have to run. Anyhow, I'll be around the dorm, so you'll see me again soon. Good meeting you!" The student turned around to run off and took one sprinting step before she remembered her backpack. She laughed and hooped it haphazardly across one of her shoulders as she walked quickly towards her room, opening her phone to begin talking on the way. | ||||

Before Leslie could respond, Veronica was gone. Darn. Oh well, wasn't the first time a girl had abruptly ended a conversation with her. At least this time it wouldn't be awkward the next time they met up. With a nod, the athletic girl resumed her jog, quickly losing herself in various thoughts brought up just before. |
