Morgan stared at his hands as Layla told the story of his psyche, nodding occasionally to show he was still listening. When she first came to the wights, he bit his lip. When she arrived at the two boys in the river, the blood drained from his face. The chest freezer and the corpse inside it made him squeeze his fingers together. A flush crept up his neck.

When she got to the fight in the antechamber, Morgan’s head snapped up in surprise.

“You saw them?” he asked. “Then you...nobody’s ever seen them.”

Were the demons really in my mind? he thought. The shadows in the corners nodded as one.

Then Grant added what he had seen on the bridge. Every word twisted a knife into Morgan’s heart. When Grant was finished, he let out a long breath, and said, “Her name was Andrea. She was...a close friend.” My best friend. “She died in an accident last year. It was on Christmas Eve.

“It’s because of Andrea that I’m here in the first place. She told me about Jung’s. Her uncle was a psychiatrist, and he worked here for a while. That was the only thing I didn’t forget, the name of the school.”

He sighed. “I had completely forgotten about her. The two months in which I knew her were just a blank. I must have been repressing the memories, I guess. Whatever you did in my head – opening that locked door – made me remember.”

He looked at Layla, Grant, Veronica, and Nathaniel in turn. “Listen, you’ve done a lot for me. Without you, my memory of Andrea would have stayed lost. You deserve an explanation. What that thing with...my face...said...well, he wasn’t exactly...he...was right.”

Morgan waited for the demons to start screaming at him, but they stayed silent, watching. They’re genuinely scared. If he was ever going to talk himself onto death row, he would never have a better chance.

“Okay. Where do I start? The beginning, I guess. The dead kid you saw in the river, his name was David...I forget his last name, but it’s not important. His name was David, and the other boy...that...was me.”

He should have stopped there and let the others absorb that, but he plunged on, half-afraid that a pause would give the demons their opportunity.

“We were in the woods, just messing around one afternoon in the summer. I realized things were following me. They were like shadows that could move. David couldn’t see them. They followed us all the way down to the river, and when we were crossing it, they started to scream.”

He rubbed the pads of his fingers against his temples. Just talking about it gave him the faintest, deepest stirrings of a headache. “When they scream, it’s...it’s unbelievable. Like power drills in your ears, all the time. Drilling into your brain. It gives me migraines that can last for days. Sometimes they scream at me because they’re angry, but sometimes, they scream words. And that afternoon, the words were...’kill him.’

“So I did. I had to. It felt like my skull was going to crack and my brain was going to run out. So I grabbed a big rock and pushed David over and...well, you saw the rest.”

The river had been cold. The blood had been warm. He’d puked a couple of times, once in the water and again in the bushes, on his way home.

“They’ve been there every day of my life since then, telling me where to go, telling me what to do. After David, they would sometimes tell me to kill other people. I...stayed strong. I learned how to ignore them, and how to block them out.”

Morgan lifted a hand and pointed into the corner. “There are nine of them. One’s standing there.” He moved his finger to behind his bed. “One there. Two by the door, one in that corner, one next to me. Layla, there’s one right behind you. There’s one next to Grant. And...”

He trailed off, frowned, re-counted. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight...

He jumped off the bed and threw open the door. The hallway was empty.

Eight.

“There are eight. Not nine.”

He slumped against the doorframe, stunned. The never went further than a room away. They were always there, always following, always watching.

But one was gone.

Morgan slid his glasses off. “There are only eight. They’ve been following me my whole life, making it a living hell. You...when you were in my head. You...got rid of one. Killed one.” He polished the lenses with the hem of his shirt. “Thank you.”

Nathaniel placed a hand on his forehead, still shaking from the fatigue he endured in the psyche. He had instinctively checked his body for any visible wounds, and, thankful that he found none, he focused his attention to the tale Morgan had explained to the rest of the team. The sounds of a repressed psyche which physically manifested into hallucinations and voices that only he could hear. It made the whole school sound like an asylum.

It dawned on Nathan that this sort of thing was probably COMMON among the students in Jung's Academy. Not exactly sure whether this was the only effective place to heal his own past wounds, but judging from the trip to Morgan's psyche, it certainly did seem like it. one notable point was how, upon the massive false Morgan's defeat, Morgan had stopped hallucinating one of the "demons" haunting him.

"So this is how traveling in the psyche works. It seems to also be a form of therapy, albeit an unconventional one," Nathaniel mused. "We managed to kill one of them... but does that mean that each of us have the same sort of monsters in our own minds?" Nathan asked, his eyes glancing at each of the members.

Veronica couldn't keep her tired and half-awake look up while listening to Morgan's story, so she gave up trying. She very highly doubted anyone would have their attention on her, besides.

She gave Morgan her full attention as his story played out, but a separate part of her brain operated her hands. They unconsciously fumbled around her side, searching for the phone that still sat in the backpack beside her bed.

Still listening to Morgan with half of her concentration while glancing down at her shaking hand, hidden from the view of the others behind the sheets. What had she been thinking of doing?

If Morgan's a murderer, you were going to report him. Murderers belong in jail. It's the right thing to do.

After becoming his friend, going inside his head, and seeing his private thoughts... she was just going to pull her phone out and call the police? Have him hauled off? Could the police even come here...? And if they could, what would happen to her?

You'd get out of this place. You'd get away from these people... and these machines.

Something about the tone in her inner monologue made Veronica feel like she had to get away from it, and she turned her attention fully back to Morgan. She was interested that he was reporting definite changes from how he'd been before they entered the world of the psyche, and his physical distress suggested he wasn't lying. Still, repressing a memory like that... was it possible?

"...We're just happy we could help," Veronica told Morgan after a brief moment to find her voice. Interestingly enough, even though he'd just confessed to a murder, it didn't feel like it affected her friendship with Morgan... like it was something that happened in another world or universe. "But, and I apologize if I'm being blunt here, but... if you're really in the shape you're talking about, maybe we'd better put a rush order on the rest? I mean, we can't put studying too far off, but if we got rid of one, eight more trips and you're home free, right?"

That's a good idea. Stay in your books and in someone else's head.

Veronica paused in her speech and frowned as if thinking of something unpleasant. "I don't have a right to be genuinely concerned for a friend who might be being driven to murder by his own brain?"

No, that's good. You're a good friend, and when you want to, you can keep a secret well. And keeping a secret from the police is kind of fun, isn't it?

Veronica was starting to feel slightly squeamish. "I-I mean, I know this must be a shock. Nathan probably has a point, and we may all want to do some investigating," Veronica said, having to choke out the last word, "But it might not be a bad idea to keep a particular eye on what you have going on... if you want, I mean. But uh, a little later. Not right after all of this."

Morgan pushed his glasses back up his nose. He hadn't noticed Veronica's reach for her phone, but the demons did; they stared straight at her hand as she moved it, although there was no way she would be able to see them.

"I don't think there has to be any big hurry," Morgan said. "Ever since Andrea died, they've been really quiet. They've hardly spoken to me. And since I woke up, every time one of you guys says something, they jump away from you. They're scared of you. I don't think they'll be a problem just yet." He shot a cold glance at the nearest few demons. They stared back, eyelessly and impassively. "And if they do become one, then I'll be able to deal with it. At least, I'll tell you guys about it before I...before it gets any worse."

"Interesting. Theory proven. Easier than expected." Grant thought as Morgan rattled off his history. He admitted to murder. It had been a long time ago, but there was no statute of limitations on murder. "He doesn't seem repentant, either. Insanity plea, I assume. Voices are a fairly easy way to convince someone you're insane."

As he continued speaking, Grant couldn't help but find himself distrusting Morgan. Andrea's "accidental" death was significantly more suspect with a murder in his history and voices constantly telling him to do it again, even if he was capable of ignoring them.

He was glad that he wasn't the only one growing distrustful. Veronica had clearly become very uncomfortable. She mentioned something about only needing a few more trips to fix Morgan, and about possibly keeping a closer eye on his problems. Grant felt like he had to agree. "It seems likely that Morgan's issues are much more serious than others' here."

Grant wasn't sure how to feel about Morgan now. He didn't feel like this affected their friendship, specifically. He seriously doubted Morgan was planning on killing him. However the murderer hadn't yet been brought to justice, seemed very willing to blame "others" for his crime, and was likely still dangerous. He wasn't planning on abandoning him, as it did seem as if they had a completely legitimate chance to fix him here. That was something that he felt was unlikely in the case that Morgan was carted away. He also couldn't know if Morgan had already been brought to trial over this or not.

What he did know is that he wasn't going to let this end up badly. Though he may have lost some trust in Morgan, he was still trying to be a friend, and was trying to get better. That was close enough to justice for now. Until he stepped out of line, Morgan would be alright by Grant.

"They should be scared of us." Grant said with a smile. "We really showed them what was what in there. I'll take care of it personally if the situation gets any worse." Grant realized a bit too late that that may have sounded a bit cold or harsh, and that so he backpedaled a bit. With a warm and almost genuine smile, a nice change from the momentarily serious stare he had been directing at Morgan, he added "If those birdbrains start bullying you, we'll just go back in and put them back in their place for you." He made sure to look at the rest of the group when saying we, as if there was any doubt as to who his pronoun referred to.

"You seem to be holding up well though." Grant made a mental note to chat with Veronica about this situation later. He trusted her a bit more than the other two. He would have to probably chat with them about it as well.

Layla opened her mouth, then closed it again as she realized what she was about to say would sound ridiculously cheesy and probably a little stupid. No matter what his reasons or excuses, Morgan had killed people, and just flat-out ignoring that was a good way to make an ass out of herself. Even so, the revelation that the shadow's words hadn't all been just hot air didn't weight nearly as heavily on her as she thought that it should have. It was just a fact of his past to her, in the same way that she felt like she shouldn't have been there at all.

Was it careless to take this so lightly? Most likely. But Layla felt like she had a right to be careless now. What was the worst that could happen? She could die? Already happened once, and it wasn't that bad. And if Morgan's words were to be believed, the 'demons' most likely to cause that were scared of them.

Once Grant spoke, she added her own sentiments. "What he said. We'll even knock off some more of them if it comes to it," she said brightly. "Don't you worry about it. We're here for you." Or if the others ended up backing out, then she was at least.

"I..."

What was I expecting? ...for them to push past me and go running for the teachers or the police. You...you dumbass, you just told them that you see invisible things and kill people. What did you expect them to do? Not this...

"You...guys. Thanks. I'm not...I don't...I don't really know what to say. If they start bothering me again, I'll keep you up to speed on it." Morgan rubbed at his eyes with the back of his hand and put his glasses back on. "Look. I'm not under any illusions that what I've done is...okay. I don't want to hurt people. I make it quick. Almost painless. I'm not some sadist who rapes people or carves them up while they're still alive." Just the thought of doing that, of the blood, made the bile rise into his throat. "I have to do it to stop the demons."

He pressed the heel of his hand to his forehead. "I should get going back to my room. I didn't sleep very well, and I imagine you guys didn't, either. I'll...see you in class, I guess."

And that was how he left it, before the others could change their minds and start giving him what he really deserved. He grabbed his backpack from where it sat next to the bed he'd used and walked out with a second look.

Well, the secret was out now, and there was no taking it back. Whatever happened to him now was bought and paid for in blood and death. God, I wish it wasn't like this.

Veronica thought that Morgan sounded like he was trying to put a spin of relative innocence on his acts, but she figured she shouldn't mention it. Assuming he was telling the truth about being driven to it by some sort of demons, Veronica had some pity for him. She imagined that if she was in the same situation, she'd be saying the same thing.

Except I wouldn't be talking in the first place.

Regardless, Morgan had wrapped it up in what she felt was a tidy enough way. Veronica decided she just wanted the matter closed for discussion at the moment... maybe some time to gather her own thoughts. Sweat and swimsuit be damned, she threw aside her cover, hopped up, and grabbed her bookbag's strap. "Good work out there today, folks... that goes double for you, Layla and Morgan. Get some sleep and don't forget to study a bit, too!"

Turning and walking out of the room, Veronica thought more about Morgan's condition. If she'd heard of his situation before arriving here, she certainly would have assumed he was insane and under the influence of hallucinations. She wasn't entirely discounting that possibility here still, but considering the strange circumstances surrounding the school, she was starting to become more open to the prospect of the supernatural. The secret technology that allowed them to each share the same dream, a coherent demonstration of the psyche in which they all had amazing powers, was a bit hard to explain in the realm of a wonder drug or a virtual simulation... so who knows, maybe Morgan really wasn't crazy but actually possessed? Who knows...

Veronica imagined an exorcist being called in and holding a hand to Morgan's head while reading scripture. The idea made her shiver...

She realized, however, that she was still smiling in spite of it. Feeling that wasn't at all the right face for the occasion, Veronica re-equipped a distracted, neutral expression as she headed to her room.

Study, right. Layla had forgotten almost entirely about studying. She'd just started here almost, and she already had a test in less than a week! How embarrassing would that have been, if she failed psychology because of unconventional, hands-on therapy expeditions? "R-right, yes," she said, immediately putting the other issues that had cropped up since she woke up out of her mind. "I should...go do that."

She stood up, turning to wave to the boys still remaining in the room. "See you around," she said, then left to return to her room as well.

Nathan wanted to say something to help Morgan out, but refrained from doing so out of fear from saying something completely off base. The girls had already dismissed themselves from the group. Seeing as there was no longer any other business that needed to be conducted here, Nathan decided to dismiss himself as well. He glanced at his watch and noticed that it was already quite late in the night, and glanced to Grant.

"I guess I should get going too. I wouldn't want to be late for classes tomorrow and get detention." Nathaniel said to Grant, before leaving the room.

Grant couldn't help but be slightly disturbed by the way that Morgan spoke about what he did. Or how he spoke about it. The way he speaks about it almost implies that he has done it multiple times." He reminded himself that he was considering Morgan completely innocent until he stepped out of line in the future.

Then he hurried out of the room, to get some more sleep. Veronica mentioned something about studying. Layla agreed. Nathan left to make sure he woke up early enough to get to class.

With no reason to remain in the room any longer, Grant, too, made his exit.
