The Jean Luc Motel was one of those establishments that nearly managed to blend the line between motel and hotel, while still falling short right at the goal line. There was nothing wrong with it; it was a new building, no reputation for bad tenants, courteous landlord, pretty pastel pink paint job. Still, it was a thin building; a thin, tall motel surrounded by all sides on windows. The problem was the rooms, and the first floor rooms could be seen from nearly any side of the building thanks to the windows. Each room was designed so pastel, so unassuming, that it practically screamed "MOTEL!" Nobody would confuse this place for a hotel so long as one of the windows was open enough for them to get a little peek inside.

It didn't help that the place was surrounded on all sides by other small business and low-end restaurants, courtesy of the compact nature of upper eastern U.S. city planning.

Still, this is where the man who'd posted the job offer for Jung Academy students had listed for a meet-up point, and it wasn't hard to spot. The vertically oriented electric sign let them know where to go, reading:

J
E
A
N

L
U
C

The man himself stood outside the building, smoking a cigarette. The man was large and built like a barrel, thick all around. His hair was slick, black, and flat; his eyes were cold and grey, lined with a long scar across the left that trailed all the way down past his lip. His body was shrouded in a tremendous black trenchcoat, under which his white-collared shirt, trim black pants, and equally black tie were visible. As his big, meaty hands went up to grab his cigarette, flick it into the trash, and then prepare to light another one, the conscientious citizens of the modern day avoided bringing their children near him, intimidated by his clothes and all of the second-hand smoke. Still, his presence was so undeniable and his look so impatient that even if he wasn't looking for Jung students, they'd probably have found him by themselves.

Ulysses made his way along the street, quietly staring at the skyline and the buildings as he passed. The evening sun cast a tall, impossibly thin silhouette onto the ground before him and doused the entire city in shades of warm orange and yellow. This made it even easier to find the building; the bizarre pink paintjob had been notable when he had first arrived and taken it upon himself to explore, but cast in sunset colours like this it grew even more pronounced. Not exactly garish, but more than a little disquieting. His kind of disquieting. His golden hair and the dark red fabric of his shirt almost glowed in this light, though he couldn't very well see it for himself.

His eyes drew level with a lone figure, so still and so powerfully built that he might have grown out of the concrete itself. A scene straight out of about a dozen paintings he'd shared venues with. Ulysses met his eyes with a nod and drew in closer to the motel's wall, out of the way of the few evening travellers running errands and making their various ways home. Here was the guy.

"You the guy?"

It had to be the guy, of course. If there were anyone in the universe to have left such a curt note, it would be this serious man with his hard-lined face and vicious-looking scar. He asked, then, not out of genuine curiosity, but out of respect for the same paradigm that had no doubt motivated this man to buy a heavy trenchcoat and develop a taste for cheap cigarettes. His gaze, meanwhile, strayed back to the pastel monument that watched over them. "... Interesting place. You didn't ask me here to repaint it, I'm guessing."

Alex wandered down the street, hands firmly shoved into the pockets of his black TnT jacket. Under the jacket he was wearing a plain red t-shirt and a pair of black jeans. His sneakers barely skimmed over the concrete sidewalk. He was staring at his feet as he walked, glancing up every now and then to verify his location.

He moved to the end of the block and then glanced at the street sign. He was close now. He turned right down the cross street and walked for a few more yards before he saw his destination. He frowned. The motel looked like a train loaded with cartoon characters had smashed headlong into it and they never bothered to paint over the gore.

“The contractor must have been colorblind,” he muttered to himself.

He spotted two figures standing near the motel. It looked like one of his fellow students had beaten him to the meet up. He grunted as he recognized the other figure. It was the FBI agent from his last mission. Perhaps he was the official liaison between Jung’s and the FBI.

He greeted the two with a simple nod.

“Are we it?”

(trying this for the 2nd time, should post less on my gameboy)

Heading down the street is a young and puny teen, looking more like an undernourished tween. He wears the school uniform under his grey hoodie so presumably he belongs around here. He bobs his head idly to something piping through his earbuds, oblivious to most of the world around him. Dark circles sit under the eyes that always try to look down, dreading random eye-contact. Despite it all, he swerves through the thinning foot traffic with the practiced skill of a bullied school recluse.

He fishes a print-out from his pocket and studies it to check his progress. Jean Luc hotel? Wasn't there something about Jean Luc and Star Trek? He shrugged and tucked it back into his pocket. It was rather.. pink. Well he wasn't a designer, maybe it was meant to sooth or something.

He spotted a trio standing by the place and glanced up and back down as quickly as he could. Adult in a trench coat that looked like a character from a game he played, guy named Detective Dick Gumshoe. A couple of teens, one reminded of himself. Too different to be a family, and unless they were a gang or something his odds of being robbed or beat up were pretty low. Meet people, he repeated in his head. That was what Victoria had said. Well, here goes.

Leon put on his best hollow smile and stepped up to the group. He hoped he wouldn't look like too much of an idiot if they had nothing to do with the job.

He reached up and pulled his hood down then pulled one of the earbuds out. "Hi. I'm Leon. You guys here for the job?", he said.

The agent looked between the guys that had assembled, then crossed his arms across his chest. "I don't know if this time's worse or better. All guys, which is probably how it ought to be, but come on, what age are you, ten? You really a student?" the man asked, putting out his cigarette to avoid breathing the smoke all over the kid. He figured he had license to smoke in front of the regular students, since a lot of them probably did it themselves, but even he couldn't let himself do it in front of such a young-looking child.

"Anyways, you're all here for the job. Thanks for reporting. FBI needs you guys on this, cause we just don't have the equipment to handle shadows. You guys probably know a thing or two more about shadows, but just in case, I'm going to give you guys a couple of pointers before we start out," he began, sensing that a few of the kids still didn't seem to have their wits about them. "I call people out here to take care of released demons when they come up. You don't have to risk your physical body on it, don't worry. I'll get to that later. Anyways, guns don't do jack sh- er, crap- against these guys. The FBI needs spelunkers to take these things on, and Jung won't let us get our hands on you, ergo, I'm soliciting your help in secret. It is important that it stays a secret, you understand?"

Sticking his hands into the pockets of his trenchcoat, the big man resisted the urge to dig back through and get another cigarette. "I know you know the drill," he continued, giving a nod to Alex, "but the rest of you guys oughtta pay close attention. These are special binoculars that duplicate the slumber and spelunking effect of those machines from Jung's. They're worth more than I make in a year, so for God's sake, be careful with them," he explained, bringing out three long pairs of binoculars and handing them over. He seemed to show none of the care that he'd warned them of; rather, he probably just had a grouchy attitude about having to hand over such technology to kids.

"Your target is on the third floor up there. Her name is Maxine Hall, she's a teacher. Specifically, she's comin' in to teach at your school. I don't want to get you guys involved in this too much, but maybe I can bounce some thoughts off of you. Listen up," he continued, hushing his voice a little bit as though he didn't want others to hear. Only now did the three realize that the streets were becoming almost completely empty, save for a few other men and women in black trenchcoats. "This teacher was involved in an exchange program at another school in Japan for two years. Now she's come here, but she's been taken over by a shadow. There are no coincidences in this world, especially not damn, big, sloppy mistakes like that. Somebody in your school's a rat. I don't know who yet. Hell, must be multiple people for this to slide through. She shoulda been put down a long time ago, but she's already through with the early stages of transformation."

"Somebody in your school intentionally imported a shadow, trying to bring them in and integrate them into the Jung teacher body. Why? Hell if I know. If a possessed did it, they should already be able to get your secrets whenever they want, so hell, could be anything." He'd made himself too anxious now, so kids-be-damned, he had to go for a cigarette. Lighting it quickly and popping it between his lips, he gave a slow draw, then continued. "I'm gonna be here watching your bodies while you're asleep. You'll have full FBI protection; that's good protection, trust me," he continued, opening up his coat. This revealed to them not only his signature combat shotgun, but also a strange sniper rifle, currently disassembled into two pieces.

"Now, this is no small thing you guys are about to do. As such, you might have questions. That's okay, but make them quick. Maxine's up there in the fifth floor window, middle from the right side, and it's open for you guys to use your binoculars. She's in there under the guise of being sick, but that sounds like a cover; she might be alert. As such, she may try to retaliate when you enter her mind, but don't let that bug you. FBI will keep you covered. Just know that once you're in there, you can't communicate with me in any way, so if you got any questions, let em out now."

Ulysses turned his eyes back to the agent with a start. Until the man had begun to speak, his eyes had been fixed firmly on the motel's painted facade, not even seeming to take notice of the two other students who had gathered in the meantime. He glanced between them now, the complete void of expression on his face making his gaze just a little unsettling. Shoegazers, he concluded. Not that they weren't trying. He'd seen many people try for the kind of smile the younger one was putting forward, but none of them had yet measured up to this kid's level of forgery. He met the mask with a more natural smile of his own. Kid had guts, showing up for this kind of thing. Least he could do was try and put him at ease.

He took his set of binoculars, his grip flexing idly as he listened to the agent's... Briefing? Felt good somehow to use such a big, important word and actually mean it. His smile grew as the demon's identity and circumstances came to light... But now there was a bitter edge to it, a sort of cold mania reflected in his eyes. "Those are some big moves they've made to take it this far. I think I like it." It almost felt like vandalism, interfering with such a large-scale plan. On the other hand, they'd slipped up and ruined the magic, or else this agent wouldn't be telling him exactly who and where their ace was. Such sloppy execution deserved punishment just as much as whatever it was these demons were actually up to, as far as he was concerned.

The plan seemed simple enough. Some voyeurism, a jump into whatever it was that people kept inside their skulls, big question mark, go home (if not quite happy, then at least with some new things to think about). He shook his head softly, his eyes downcast. "Probably none you'd answer for some kid you just met. Just give me a good place to stare into someone's window from, and I can wing it from there."

"Ulysses Corta." He turned to face his fellow students, his face suddenly dead serious. YOU-luh-sees, followed by a brief, ducking bow. He barely even hated the sound of it anymore -- funny how quickly you got used to these things. "I'd be more cordial, but I guess we have something to take care of." His eyes flickered over to Alex. "I take it you've done this kind of thing before... Lemme know if I'm about to get myself dream-killed or whatever." That enigmatic smile returned again, heralded by a soft chuckle. "But besides that... Let's just have fun with this, yeah?"

Alex listened to the agent’s mission briefing with a passing interest. He knew that he should be paying better attention, but agent’s words had sparked an internal dialogue that was drowning out the conversation going on around him. The target this time was a teacher, one who was being transferred to the school. Last time it was a student who had been corrupted. That made more sense to Alex. Being overtaken by the shadows was a real risk for the student’s of Jung’s academy. That’s why they were chosen to go to the school after all. But a teacher, one from outside the school, that further implied an organized effort to infiltrate the school. He wondered if he would run into Carver again inside the teacher’s psyche.

The agent handed over three of the special binoculars. Alex took his in silence, noting that the agent was warning them about breaking the expensive devices. He looked around at the other two students. One couldn’t have been older than ten or eleven to look at him, a tiny thing. Alex doubted the kid would be of much help in a physical altercation. The other guy looked like he could take a punch at least. However, the psyche was nothing like the real world. It was dangerous and Alex was the old hand expected to lead them through to safety. He didn’t think he was ready for that kind of responsibility.

The taller of the two students, Ulysses, was talking to him.

“Hm? Oh, yes, once. Name’s Alex.”

Alex paused. The last time he had infiltrated a psyche, there were four students. Him, Ted, Catherine and Yoko. Now there were three of them. Him, Ulysses and the kid. Did the kid give a name? Oh, yes, Leon. Yoko had been useless, but Alex doubted that these two would be much better. They were too new, too green. Alex himself was little better, but at least he had some experience.

“No,” he told Ulysses. “There is nothing fun about this. I’ll do what I can to see us safely through, but make no mistake; people’s lives are depending on us in there.”

The boy's smile dipped as he heard what was going on and what was expected of him. He thought this was for tutoring or to do some cleanup. They could have asked him to wash cars or do anything else but combat? He barely just got to the school. Sure, Victoria had told him to.. To..

Then it hit him. The conversation he and Victoria had in the Velvet Room. He winced as he held his head, trying to disguise the sharp pain that struck him along with the head rush. It was like adrenaline had been building up for awhile but he had fought it back and now his heart was racing and sweat was beginning to appear on his brow. Shadows. They were going inside a teacher's psyche to... pacify her personal demons. The shadows were spread from every bad thought, every bad vibe, every doubt and self loathing. If she had been planted here did that mean the shadows wore her like a mask? Was she even salvagable or were they about to go into her and carve up what was left of an empty husk?

He gritted his teeth and some part of him snapped under the pressure. He reached out and took one of the devices the man was passing around and he laughed. The smile was back on but a bit more dopey and carefree than fake. Whatever. This was an adult telling him what to do. He could do what he was told. He said something about the FBI too so he must be part of them or a policeman or something. It didn't matter anymore. Thinking hurt, threatened to remind him of his own nightmares. He would just get in there and do.. Whatever. He would let the other guys lead and he would follow. Maybe he could even be helpfull.

Other than the laugh the boy had remained silent, though conflict had showed on his face earlier. His eyes raised to meet the agent's gaze and his carefree visage melted a bit with a sudden worry "S-sorry Sir but. Uh. I was wondering.. If we don't do so well in there does that mean the teachers is.. Uh.. Your gonna.. You know", he asked, unable to finish the question but he raised a shaky hand stuck out two fingers and thumb, immitating a gun, which he pointed at his own head. He swallowed, his mouth dry as he made it go 'bang'.

"Hey, I don't know why everybody's laughing all of a sudden, but cut it out. I mean, whatever you gotta do to relax, but ain't nothin' funny about this crap," the FBI officer scolded the three, keeping his cigarette between his lips as he spoke. "And as for your question, kid, let me put it this way: lotta people in the FBI got a lotta different ideas about what should be done with these shadows. As it stands, if we shoot one to put it down, for starters, we'd be extremely lucky for them to actually be injured by our bullets. For closers, research division would have our heads for it. When all of this is over, whether that teacher's still possessed by a shadow or not, we're taking her alive. If she doesn't have the ability to... touch people and turn them to gold and deflect bullets with her skin, it'll be a hell of a lot easier," he grumbled, seeming increasingly grumpy. Despite having asked for questions, he sure didn't seem to like asking them.

"Anything else? We oughtta get on this," the big man murmured, looking back up towards the building as he waited. "Just go ahead and plug those binoculars up to your eyeballs whenever you're ready. Uh, carefully, of course. Binoculars can cause eye injuries but... I hope you guys don't need to be warned about that," he finished, imagining what a situation it'd be if his spelunkers outed themselves with self-inflicted injuries before the mission even started.

"Mm. Ours among them," Ulysses noted to Alex, that faint smile still upon his lips. "Don't worry, I'm not about to forget why we're here. I'm just... savouring the moment, I guess." He spread his arms, the gesture equal parts an expansive motion and a simple shrug. He had to admit, albeit inwardly, that the concerns Alex and the agent seemed to share weren't too far off the mark. His mind was absolutely crackling with anticipation, and he wasn't even entirely sure why.

With a final placating grin directed at the hardcase agent, he began to cross the empty street across from the motel with a deliberate backwards gait. His eyes were fixed on the fifth-story window just right of center, his soft-soled shoes picking out a path over the uneven cracked asphalt with catlike ease. Suddenly he spun on his heel on his heel, his thumbs hooking into his pockets, his fingers holding the binoculars in a death grip against the front of his thigh, his shoulders dropping into an uncharacteristic slouch. The result, from behind, was the fairly convincing image of a kid who had absolutely no reason to be where he was going, or much of an idea where that was.

When he turned once again, inches from the rough brickwork of the building across the street, his smile had vanished, his eyes flickering ever so briefly upwards before settling back on the other two. With a curt nod he settled back against the wall, his legs crossed, the cold mortar sending a shiver over his body as he raised the binoculars to his eyes. His jaw muscles tensed; whatever he could see, he wasn't quite pleased about it.

Alex glanced upward toward the window where his target was staying. He didn’t have a good enough angle from where he was standing to see the teacher. He doubted that the FBI agent had set up a room in the building across from the motel for them to use. He and the other boys would probably have to hunker down on the sidewalk across the street and spy from there.

“Not a lot of cover,” Alex observed. “If we are going to be doing this on the sidewalk, make sure you keep an eye out. If that Carver shows up again, we are completely exposed out here. We’ll do our part though.”

Alex followed Ulysses across the street and hunkered down against the wall. He glanced up at the correct window and focused his gaze on the teacher. He brought the binoculars up to his eye level so he could stare through the lenses to the teacher beyond.

Leon's expression muted as the adult chastized him for his outbutst and he mumbled "Sorry, Sir". As he took in the response though one of his eyes twitched in mounting tension. Turn them to gold? Bulletproof? Great. Just.. Great.

He followed the others, still unsure what exactly he was supossed to do really, he had never even seen a spelunker device and now he had some magical government binoculars that were supossed to imitate them. He put them up to his face as he was instructed and tried to focus in on the window. Was he just supossed to see her? Meet her gaze? Push a button when she was in focus? He waited on Alex to go first, or so he hoped.

"We haven't found that Carver guy yet, but I've got my best men on lookout, watching over you. You can't see them, but they can see you. Don't worry, I've got a lot of them on this, working in groups... Unless that bastard's got three or four other shadow buddies we don't know about, all assigned to the same group, you're covered," the detective continued, sounding assured, although his eyes were now darting around the upper stories of several building suspiciously. It was obvious that he still hadn't entirely gotten over being double-crossed by one of his men.

Everyone took up their positions further down the street and brought their binoculars to bear, some more quickly than others. Up inside the Jean Luc, they spotted their target: a woman in her early 20s with orange-gold hair and a rosy complexion. She was dressed rather provocatively in a short, semi-transparent white sleeping gown; her hair was down, hanging just to her shoulders. Her body made it hard to stare, especially her long, adult legs, as she stepped around her room... Almost drunkenly. Perhaps actually drunkenly? That would certainly be the ordinary thought, considering she had left her window open while dressed in such a way.

Her eyes were covered by thin-rimmed, shining glasses. Knowingly, she removed the glasses and gave a glance towards the window, as if seeing them. Even more eerily, she mouthed words that were impossible to understand, then gave a warm, alluring smile. Her eyes, as Alex may have suspected, were an impossible, supernatural shade of gold.

Before the three had any more time to think, they could already feel the world fading around them. The big FBI agent came over to shield them, apparently having gotten some word from his lookouts, and other FBI members ran out to gather up the kids and move their bodies. As the last remnants of their hearing and vision faded, they saw the woman move to the window... and begin to float out of it, surrounded by golden light. Or perhaps the dream had already started?

When the three spelunkers came to, they found that they were surprisingly sore; not just bed-sore, but actually stinging. What they found when they investigated the sensation was that they had been dragged away from the building, which had resulted in painful skinned, sore spots popping up in several places. Presumably, it was better than the alternative; they had seen a supernatural being floating down towards them with possible evil intent earlier, after all.

There was no sign of Maxine; FBI agents busily swarmed around in black coats. The Jean Luc actually seemed to be on fire, which provided further evidence that they could have been in serious, real-world danger. Two FBI agents came over to help the children off the asphalt, but the big guy they'd seen earlier was nowhere to be found. "Hey, you three. The POI just went down; figure we have you Jung's guys to thank," one, a short, pale-skin woman in heavy gear, informed them. She and her partner took back the binoculars as they spoke. "We couldn't do this without you. Here, the boss told us to give you this. Payment, for facing the risks just as much as finishing the job."

The dollars they'd been handed looked foreign and useless. Did they have any value? "Er, don't actually try to spend that. From what I gather, the suggestion of the money... influences your dreams... and then you have it in your dream? Or something? It's all too confusing for me," she sighed, speaking in a hurried voice. She sounded like she probably had grown up in the north-eastern U.S. herself. "I hope you guys will consider helping us out again in the future. It's best if we can get in touch with ones who've done previous work. As for Maxine, we're taking care of her now. Her mental state probably wasn't so bad when she was affected, so I don't think she'll be as hard to bring back as that student friend of yours. I hope Jung's not too slow on the pick-up, though, figuring out that she needs to hire another new teacher. Just remember: keep quiet about it!"

Back in the real world, dusk had just about finished paving the way for the night. The shadows were long, but incredibly faint, and the dim red light of the sunken sun did a much poorer job of illuminating the world than the fire blazing in the motel. Ulysses accepted the money with a tacit nod, idly rubbing at his cheek as he sat there. He hadn't even expected that to work, much less sting like that. Folding the foreign bills into his front pocket, he quietly thanked the agent and got to his feet. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw other figures on the ground stirring nearby. "Right, then. If we're all done here..." He turned to find his partners --

What?

He doubled over coughing, screwing his eyes shut against the unexpected wave of sensation. What he was seeing was nonsense. Granted, there had been... minor flickers since the incident at the gallery, but he'd kept them down by a myriad of debatably healthy means. He'd left the full experience behind in Maxine's dream-world, hadn't he? The whole point of his Persona was to keep that sort of thing at bay, wasn't it?

The fit subsided with merciful speed and he tentatively returned to his feet. "Sorry about that... As I was saying." His eyes moved from Alex to Leon and then back again, his focus seeming to avoid their eyes. "I'm guessing neither of you feel like going straight to sleep after that... ridiculous adventure." A faint smile crept back over the corners of his mouth. He gazed off down an avenue, drawing himself up to his full height as if to see just a little bit farther. "I know a cafe not too far from here that isn't in the habit of closing down for the night. I don't know about you two, but I don't think I'll sleep right until I've talked this over and made sure it really happened -- and I'd much rather be indoors with some coffee than next to a burning building surrounded by FBI."

He took a few steps off down a side-street before turning on his heel and directing a beckoning tilt of the head at the two of them. "So how about it? It'll be on me."

Alex opened his eyes and returned to the real world. With his awakening came a throbbing pain in the pack of his skull. He wasn’t in the same place where he had gone to sleep and could only assume that he had been dragged away from the fighting. Judging by the pain in his skull, he must have cracked his head against the ground while being dragged.

Several agents were running around, most likely dealing with the aftermath of the battle against Maxine. The motel was in flames, further evidence that a shadow’s real world abilities mirrored those it had in the psyche. Two of the agents broke off from the rest and headed toward Alex and the other boys. Alex accepted the hand of one of the agents and was pulled to his feet. The female agent thanked them and handed each of them some kind of currency.

“Yeah thanks,” Alex muttered. “And no problem. We’ll keep this on the down low.”

Alex ran a hand through his hair, pausing to rub the aching spot on the back of his skull. Ulysses was talking to them. Something about not being able to sleep and wanting to get some coffee. Alex didn’t see a problem with going to a coffee shop for a while. At least until the pain died down.

“Sure,” Alex said. “Might as well.”

Leon came to laying on the sidewalk. He sat up slowly and groaned with a wince as his head swam. He idly took in his surroundings and his disheveled condition. The pink motel was burning down. Huh. After being so close to the carnage moments ago, it just didn't seem quite so shocking. Maybe even tamer? Unless the flaming flamingo started screaming about immortality anyway.

He was relieved that his hoodie was back, and figured that was why he was spared scrapes or other damage from being manhandled like Alex and Ulysses. Well, he was pretty light too. Probably just got tossed to the spot. He idly clutched the mp3 player hanging from his neck as he tried to go over events in his head but they seemed sureal and fuzzy. Clearer than his meeting with Victoria though. Maybe he had to go at it a bit more to get used to spelunking?

He accepted the help up from the FBI agents, returned their gear and nodded as they were sort of debriefed. He scanned the area and mumbled, maybe just loud enough for the agent to hear him mention "No Moses.."

He quietly accepted his payment, vaguely remembering if he was of much help. When Ulysses mentions the cafe he nods quietly and replaces his earbuds, turns his mp3 player on a quiet volume so he can still hear, and slides his hands into his pockets. Something about Ulysses creeps him out a bit, something he knows he should remember from Maxine's dream but he was scared out of his wits and spends half his waking hours in a daze as it is. The dark circles under his eyes look even deeper now as he stifles a yawn and waits for Ulysses to lead on.
