STRAIGHT OUT OF THE LA TIMES; Concerning Sony and the PS3

"Sony Corp. has patented technology that would prevent its PlayStation (3) consoles from playing used, rented, or borrowed games - raising questions about whether the electrons and entertainment giant may attempt to redefine what it means to own something in the digital age"

In other words

Anyone that buys a PS3 can't rent games, can't borrow friends games, and can't buy used games. You have to buy brand new games, which are probably going to be at least 70 bucks a pop.

Sony's all ready estimated to lose $300 mil

This very old news and its been in debate for far too long. Sony has also confermed that at this point in time, the technology is nothing more then a rumor

Eh.. the way I would invision it would be like this.

One PS3.. one game.. one serial code.

Once you activate that serial code once.. it nullifies it. Therefore, whenever you put the game in, you enter the serial code for it, and if it doesn't match your PS3 copy.. you can't play it.

Something like that, needs to be elaborated on a bit more. But you should be able to catch the general idea of what I'm aiming for here.

Even if they do do that, someone is obviously going to find a way around it....

A rumor?

They patented it. You idiot.

They can patent it all they like, it doesn't mean that they are going to use it. With consumer backlash from all this, they stand to lose billions when no-one wants to buy the console (RRP in Australia - $999 btw). At most, this is a great publicity ploy by Sony to get people talking about the console.

There is nothing in the article (I found the online version) that says that Sony are going to use the technology; only that the papers have been filed in April 2000. Note that it was in April 2000 that they put the papers in. That was 6 years ago.

All the article mentions is the patent itself, then nothing but a history of the proposed technology. Sony would have made an announcement by now about it because if they release the console without mentioning that one very costly condition in their consoles, they are actually liable for a false advertising lawsuit from many unhappy customers who want to do as little as take their game over to their friends house to play the game.

Btw, the LA Times is the ONLY newspaper to pick up this story. Nothing is mentioned anywhere else recently about the patent or the technology. Gamespot.com had the same type of thing up many months ago with better information including a quote for a proper Sony rep (something the LA Times does not have.)

So before you go calling me an idiot, you should get your facts striaght.

Idiot

And for reference sake, here's a link to the article in question:

And the one from Gamespot.com (Which is more informative):

That's the stupidest thing I ever heard in my life. Within 6 months of its release you will be able to put a mod chip on it and play burnt games.

Didn't you read Speed's post?

And they had it on the KTLA News this morning.. they're not sure if they'll put it in the PS3, but there's a chance.

No chance, like what Killjoy said.

And for what speed said. No chance also, they tried that with ps2 and got nothing. We're in an age where new technology is brought up every day, they might stop the mod chip for the first 6 - 12 months, but after that a way will be found.

Here's what I think will happen.

Sony plays the market, releases PS3, and then about a year or two later, BAM your PS3 needs an addon or something along those lines. So they come out with a slimmer version of the PS3 like they do with every other console they make.

That new slimmer console eleminates the old PS3's and this time it comes with copyright protection.

Yeah, but like I did with PS2, I and everyone else can keep the old version. And if you do then you can continue to copy games and play them. They just can't stop it, no one can.

Hmm, see your theory proves to have two major bulletholes in it.

1) I kept my old PS2.. it broke down from old age.

2) Depends where you live. In Canada, we have the sole right to own one backup copy of anything we've purchased.

In America its breaking the law.

Australia.. iunno.
