“That is the most intense training you’ve put me through, Serge, going through the obstacle course seven times, and running up that damned hill twice, what else you got planned for me today?”

Sergeant Thompson comes into the room from around the corner and walks over and sits down in the chair across from me.

Sergeant Thompson: “Nothing else, you’re done. And the only reason I did that was to prepare you for the Taking Hold of the Flame Battle Royal, you’ve got to be ready, you’ve got to be in the best shape of your career. I’ve watched some of the tapes from the past Battle Royals that you’ve been in and you really weren’t all that in shape, plus, you‘ve got a huge match this week against Mister Showtime, and you didn‘t have a match last week so you‘ve got to be prepared for that too.”

I know he’s right, I just wont admit it. I hate it when he’s right. Anyway, I walk over to the locker and take my bag out of there and then sit down on the bench across from Sergeant Thompson and lean back against the set of lockers behind me.

Sergeant Thompson: “So, let me ask you something, Chris, man to man, no strings attached. What do you think about Nancy?”

That question takes me by surprise. I find it very hard to believe that there’s no strings attached with that question, because he’s Sergeant Thompson, when it comes to a young woman in his family he becomes very protective of here, I should know, happened to one of my buddies.

“She’s nice.”

Sergeant Thompson: “Nice?”

“Yeah, she’s nice.”

Sergeant Thompson: “Well, I’m going to tell you something, Chris. She likes you, she can’t stop talking about you. When you invited us to Atlanta last weekend that was the greatest thing that’s ever happened to her. And quite frankly, Chris, I want to see her happy. I hope your not doing this just because she looks good.”

“No way, not a chance. Honestly, between you and me, I liked her the first time she called me. Just one of those connections people make. You know what I mean?”

Sergeant Thompson: “Yeah, I know what you mean. I felt that way when I met my wife, she was standing across the room, and I was sitting at a table in college, she was standing in the line to get her lunch, and our eyes met and we immediately hit it off. I knew from the first time I talked to her that she was going to be the women I spent the rest of my life with.”

I think about that for a moment, just thinking if I want to spend the rest of my life with Nancy, she’s beautiful, she’s smart, and we haven’t even been on a date yet, although I would like to take her out to dinner sometime or to a movie or something. I raise up and rests my arms on my legs and scratch my nose.

“I hear you man, but, I have to get to know Nancy just a little bit better. I mean, I’ve barely gotten to know her really, I’ve gotta spend some time with her, just me and her, and get to know her. I have to get to know what she likes what she doesn’t like and things that she looks for in a guy…”

Sergeant Thompson: “What she looks for in a guy? I can tell you exactly what she looks for in a guy. She looks for a guy like you. Last Saturday night, Chris, when we got to that hotel she couldn‘t wait to see you, and then when we were into the hotel room, when you were in the restroom, she looked over at me and smiled and I could tell that she was truly, well, in love.”

Yet again, I’m taking aback by this statement made by Sergeant Thompson, I can’t believe that he said that, it just takes me by surprise.

“Well, I’m not sure if I’m there yet, because quite frankly, for me, at least, I think you have to get to know somebody in order to love somebody, and I don’t think I know enough about her to say that I love her. I mean, I like her, but, at this point in time, I can’t say I love her, you know what I mean?”

Sergeant Thompson: “Yeah, I know exactly what you mean, I said the same thing to my wife’s father when he told me that he knew my wife was in love with me. Of course, I think for guys, some guys, it takes more time to know if a man is in love than for a woman to know that she is in love. But, once a man does realize that he’s in love, it’s one of the greatest feelings he ever has, trust me, I know.”

I hear what he’s saying, and I’ve really been thinking about asking Nancy out since the Saturday night before the Pay Per View when her and Sergeant Thompson came to Atlanta and spent most of the night with me.

“Well, don’t worry Serge, I’m definitely gonna ask her out, just not sure when. I mean, with what I do know about her, she’s a great woman and I like to talk to her and I would like to spend time with her, just getting to know her and what she’s done, learn about her life and things like that.”

Sergeant Thompson: “Well, I’ll tell you right now, when you do ask her out, Chris, you’ll hear no arguments out of me, because quite frankly, I think you two would be great together and I’m sure that you would do nothing to hurt her at all.”

“You’re right, I wouldn’t.”

I get up out of my seat and then start thinking about asking Nancy out on a date and trying to work up enough courage in order to do that. Then, I take my cell phone out of my pocket and start walking towards the door to leave the building so that way I can get to my car and head to back home. Then, I put my cell phone up, I’m too afraid to call her now that I’ve started thinking about that so I try and start focusing on my match against Showtime.

“Well, Mister Showtime, it looks like you finally decided to reappear after years of being out of SCW. How long has it really been two, three years? Hell, I dunno, it might be more than that, I mean, I’ve been here for a little more than four years and you weren’t gone long after I got here, maybe within a year, so, it might be four years, and I’m gonna take a stab in the dark here and say that was the last time you stepped into a wrestling ring, I dunno if that’s right or not.”

I take a drink of the water I have down in the cup holder, keeping my eyes on the road and instead of putting my water back where it was I simply hold on to it to make it easier on me so I can drive and be able to take a drink at the same time.

“Now, Showtime, I’ve been back in SCW for a little over two months and I’ve only won one match since I’ve been back. Am I okay with that? Hell no. Do I understand why I’ve been losing all these matches? Yeah I do, I’m still a bit rusty, I mean, hell, I can tell that I’m rusty whenever I step into the ring, but, as time goes by, that rust is wearing off, I could really tell when I kick your boy Mayhem’s ass on the Redemption pre-show match last Sunday night.”

Good Mayhem reference there, Showtime wont like that at all, wait, wasn’t he a part of the original Dynasty here in SCW? Yeah, that’s right, I remember now.

“Something I just remembered Showtime, you were part of the original Dynasty group here in SCW back in the early days, I don’t remember who was in there with you and quite frankly, I don’t give a damn who was in there with you, actually, I don’t remember you either, I’m just going on what Sergeant Thompson has told me, apparently, he’s managed to find your name on like the fiftieth page on Google and managed to pull up some facts about you, wasn’t much though.”

I take another drink of water, I like the feel of the water going down my throat. Sorry, random thought, again, eh, shit happens. Back to the match…

“Showtime, when I saw you on Breakdown this past Wednesday, just a couple days ago, honestly, I was shocked. I wasn’t shocked because you were back in SCW. I was shocked because you actually got some sort of reaction from the fans. I mean, hell, what have you done to get people to remember you, what have you done to build a legacy? And don’t even start on me asking that question, because I know you will if you ever cut a promo this week. You’ll start on the fact that I’ve only won one match and that when you’re done with me I wont even be in SCW anymore, well, save it, cause I’ve been there before, I’ve heard the same shit from Michael Carrington, Shyne, Shorty Junior, and everybody else I’ve faced since I’ve been back so save the bullshit.”

I finally set my water bottle back down in the cup holder and put my blinker on to take the next exit, I start to slow down as I get on the exit ramp, there’s a stop sign coming up so I get on the brakes even harder to prepare to come to a complete stop.

“Showtime, Wednesday on Breakdown, me and you we’ve got a battle to go through, and someone wont enjoy the battle. Although, I do have bigger things to worry about than you, I’ve got a Taking Hold of the Flame Battle Royal to prepare for and to win, and right now, I’m feeling better than I have in two months, and with perfect timing too. So, Mister Showtime, I’ll see you this coming Wednesday on Breakdown, I hope you’re ready to go to Boot Camp.”

I start to head down the road towards my house and pick up my cell phone and think about calling Nancy yet again, however, yet again, I put down my cell phone.

“I can’t do it, I think I’ll call Sergeant Thompson sometime this week and see if he can give me some pointers on how to go about asking Nancy out, because quite frankly, I suck at this.”

I take a deep breath and then pull into my driveway and put the car in park and turn off the engine and just sit there for a minute, feeling down that I can’t find the courage to call Nancy and ask her out, and I’m not sure why either, I didn’t have any trouble asking out the last girl that I dated, how is this any different? How is Nancy any different from any other girl that I’ve dated? Sure, it’s been a while since I’ve had a date, but, that shouldn’t be the problem, if only I knew what it was.

------------------------------------

*-* The man is back! The often overshadowed, overlooked superstar in the first era of SCW…is back. One may ask the question, where has this man been? To the newer SCW audience the question is, who is this man? For the new school, SCW this is a man who was here from the beginning and ran down his path in a leisurely during his tenure in SCW. With a suitcase in hand and his hair in his styled in his trademark afro the returning superstar enters his dressing room…nothing but silence and a sense of relief in the air…*-*

Mr.Showtime: “In the words of Jordan , I’m back.”

*- * A large hand pats Showtime on the back. In shock, Showtime drops his suitcase and turns around to see a grinning Mayhem.*-*

Mr.Showtime: “Well, if it aint the guy who brought me back… you seem all happy. You’re still riding the high from last week huh?”

Mayhem: “Man I’m just glad to have you back.”

Mr.Showtime: “Well, I’d like to say it’s great to be back but…”

*-* Showtime opens the door before him and tosses his suitcase in the room nonchalantly. He glances around and sees the old setup that he had got so accustomed to several years ago losing his current thoughts speaking to Mayhem*-*

Mr.Showtime: “Wow, this is nostalgic. Man, everything looks the same, but everything’s changed. I’ve been keeping my tabs on this place while I was gone. Every once in awhile I’d flip through the channels and catch a little SCW.And man wow is all I can say! I mean look, ya got new faces in high places now. A lot of the stars of my day are gone…I didn’t get to face a lot of them while I had the chance. Thinking back again… I didn’t even capitalize on the opportunities I…”

*-* Mayhem cuts him off. *-*

Mayhem: “Show!”

Mr.Showtime: “Nawh man I don’t need any consoling or nothing like that… something I learned during my time out was that’s for the weak. Ya see Mayhem, a few years ago that would’ve been good for me. I might as well let the cat out the bag now, there’s no need in hiding it anymore. Nobody knows that the real reason that I left SCW years ago was because in my very last match which was in cage for my then Canadian Championship title, I tweaked my neck pretty bad man. Bad enough to the point where doctors ordered me to stay out of the ring for 4 or 5 months... but I didn’t listen. I left SCW and… competed in a few low rate promotions just so I wouldn’t be so rusty when I got back over here. But once my neck gave me trouble, and I found out that most startup promotion are in on some shady business including, the one I was apart of, I quit. I decided wrestling would be my past and… maybe college and a blue collar job would be the future. So I went to a little community college for a year, but you know how it gets with us wrestlers, I got the itch again in mid 2006. So I was back again in another small promotion earning a little bit of money… and then that’s when I started talking to you again. And then all the memories came rushing back to me from; being apart of The Dynasty, to being SCW’s first ever Light Heavyweight champion, the Canadian Champion, and the Intercontinental Champion. I got that jolt that just said… my legacy in SCW aint done yet. I came here an undersized inexperienced teenager who swore up and down that he had this place mapped out! But obviously I didn’t. I mean lets face it, I didn’t wind up in the Hall of Fame, and I never won the Heavyweight title. Now I come back a man whose gone around the globe and experienced what hardship and struggle is. I see, I caught a break when I came to SCW to be around some of the best talent. And this time things will be different…Mayhem before we even consider teaming up… I want you know this…”

*-* Mayhem raised his left eyebrow not exactly sure what to expect from his old friend.*-*

Mayhem: “Man you haven’t changed at all, still dramaticas ever.”

Mr.Showtime: “Look man, after that neck scare I just know, you never know when your time is up man. And one way or another I gotta get where I wanna be. Now you’re down with me right?”

Mayhem: “Yeah man you know that.”

Mr.Showtime: “Ok good… because this is just a heads up for you. This run in SCW isn’t gonna be anything like my last.”

Mayhem: ‘Yo Show, I’m not sure I exactly know what your saying.. and you actually are kinda freaking me out.”

Mr.Showtime: “Look! This time around… I’m doing ANYTHING…AND EVERYTHING in my POWER for the sake of my dream. You got that?”

*-*Mayhem looked at his friends stern facial expression and could clearly see, showtime had undergone some changes.*-*

Mr.Showtime: ‘I’m just letting you know man. If you’re gonna be down with me… we gotta roll… no more of this loser shit!”

Mayhem: “Hold up man what are you trying to say? You saying that I’m a loser!? Look man this aint exactly the SCW of old. Besides that you know I got a lot going on outside of this to!”

*-*Showtime smirked at his friend and placed his hand on his shoulder.*-*

Mr.Showtime: ‘I know man, my bad. I know this isn’t exactly the SCW of old… but my opponent is.”

*-* Showtime finally proceeded to enter his locker room after standing on the outside of it talking with Mayhem for minutes. With a gesture Showtime invited his friend inside and he followed.. As Showtime walked he steps just in front of the suitcase that he tossed in the room earlier and lightly kicks it across the room. Showtime begins pacing back and forth in the room as Mayhem takes a seat on a couch and breaks the brief silence…*

Mayhem: “So I take it you know who your opponent is I’m guessing?”

*-* A wide smile crawls upon the face of Showtime as he responds.*-*

Mr.Showtime: “Hell yeah! You know me man. I study my opponents day in and day out! I know who this guy is though, I vaguely remember him. He had a few words for me that I heard to…but again it’s something that I expected though. But Mayhem I need an honest answer from you…do you think I’ve been forgotten?”

*-* Showtime looked at Mayhem with an emotionless face looking for a straight answer from his friend. Mayhem with any reluctance shouted.*-*

Mayhem: “No man. You know how the respect factor is …”

*-* Cutting Mayhem off.*-*

Mr.Showtime: ‘Your right Mayhem… I do. I do know even if they did remember me, not many would respect what I’ve done. It’s just a blatant fact that really…really bothers me. Even when I was here, and had composed a winning record and won all those titles I still knew I wasn’t getting that respect I knew I deserved. I didn’t get that respect of a CHBK, or a Jay Gold or an… Acid Burn. I was always trying to break the barrier… and before the damn injury… I felt I was on my way… up… to break that ceiling. This shit amazes me though a man General Lawler who has been here but has performed little of anything to this day has such words for me!”

*-* Within a brief moment of speaking Showtime ran over to the couch opposite to that of Mayhem and began stomping the couch repeatedly and shouting *-*

Mr.Showtime: “WHY THE HELL DO I GET NO RESPECT! I’VE ALMOST DIED DOING THIS!”

Mayhem: “Ay Show man, chill out! You know what you’ve done man!”

*-*Showtime stopped stomping on the couch and approached his friend with balled up fist at his side. Mayhem stared at his friend seemingly unfazed.*-*

Mr.Showtime: “You know what though!? That shit aint enough anymore!”

*-* Loosening his fists and quickly calming down he pats himself on the head a couple times… and smirks.*-*

Mr.Showtime: “My bad man… and its not like the couch disrespected me either…hehe…my bad. But you know what Mayhem… neither one of us is taking the backseat anymore though man. General Lawler is just step one. He may have been around for… however long, but he hasn’t done what I’ve done… and he hasn’t done what you’ve done. This isn’t a matter of whose better than who Mayhem… it’s about what your willing to do to get what you want! Are you really doing all that you can do to get what you want!? Nobody can take the past away that we have here! And if anybody does try and disregard what we’ve done then they’ll be dealt with! Nobody like a Chris Lawler will have anything to do with the demise of Showtime! If he doesn’t appreciate the talent of Showtime or Mayhem…to hell with him then man! We’ve already proved we can do what we do at the top level of this business. It’s not possible for me to spiral backwards and I won’t let it happen to me or you! If there’s gonna be anybody that’s killing my career…it for damn sure will be ME! Nobody else! And I won’t let it die until I’ve done what I’ve wanted to do.”

*-*Mayhem still looking at his friend unfazed by his disturbing, yet moving outburst responded calmly.*-*

Mayhem: “I understand man…you got a right to feel like you do. We both got these goals that are unreachable to the average…”

*-*Once again Showtime cuts his friend off.*-*

Mr.Showtime: “But we aint average!”

Mayhem: “Show, shutup and quit cutting me off.. One thing to remember this time around is to keep your head level. I can really tell your not yourself right now man. Your letting out all this pent up frustration, but hey! That’s good. Everybody has it, and everyone has to release it at some point and time ya know. Trust me, you know my situation man… in due time man we’ll get what we have coming to us man. Just relax a little… because right now man…you seem… a little to desperate to be out there in the ring. Cuz look man I know you really do mean well, but you cant come around me with all this negative energy. I really do hear your story… and your just angry for… be yourself…your old self, that’s who you are. You were loving what you were doing in the ring and I can tell. And now you just look insanely desperate to be back in action!”

*-* Mayhem spoke to his friend smiling only to see him looking towards the floor intentionally avoiding eye contact. Feeling the need to respond Showtime looks at his friend faintly grinning.*-*

Mr.Showtime: “Mayhem… maybe I am desperate…but you know what though… I don’t give a damn. Trust me man…I know what I’m doing, and I know what I got to do this time around. It’s all on the line this time around… like I said. So man hey! For the sake of the dream…?”

*-*Showtime speaks extending his hand with his wide grin that Mayhem and SCW had been accustomed to seeing in the past. He stood awaiting Mayhem to shake his hand, who seemed to lost in thought After a brief moment Mayhem takes his hand and shakes…*-*

Mayhem: “For the sake of the dream.”
