“Man, I’m so ready for Sunday night. This will be my big shot, guys. Sarge, I know we’ve been training hard all week, but, I want to train even harder. I want to be in top form for Rise to Greatness, this is my true shot to prove that, and I want to do just that.”

Sergeant Thompson: “Don’t worry, Chris, I know what you mean, and I’ve already got some things in mind for the next couple days. You’ll be in top shape when Sunday rolls around.”

Nancy: “And Chris, don’t worry about stuff at home, I’ll make sure that the house stays clean, all you’ll have to do is concentrate on your match Sunday night.”

I can feel the anticipation already building in my body, this is the moment I’ve been waiting for since I came back to SCW just a few short months back. And now, I get a chance to take on either Greg Cherry or Josh Hudson for the United States Championship, a title that I have yet to hold here in SCW. Although, I have had my shot at Greg Cherry for the title a year or two ago.

“Thanks guys, that sounds awesome, Sarge, I’ll definitely be looking forward to training over the next couple of days, and Nancy, as always, I’m definitely looking forwards to having you spend a couple of days with me in the house.”

I start to head for my bedroom, as Nancy and Sergeant Thompson sit there on the sofa, and I go and put my bag in my bedroom. I head back downstairs, just as Sergeant Thompson heads for the kitchen. I reach the bottom of the stairs and take a seat on the sofa again.

“Where’s he goin?”

Nancy: “He went to get himself something to drink.”

I haven’t been able to go to the store for a couple of weeks now, so, he’ll come back pretty disappointed, but, he’ll have to get over it.

“Yeah, there’s nothing in there.”

Just about that time, Sergeant Thompson walks back through the door of the kitchen and looks slightly angry as he approaches the couch.

Sergeant Thompson: “Chris, you bastard, you could’ve told me there was nothing in there to drink.”

“You didn’t ask…”

Me and Nancy give each other a look and then we bust out laughing. Sergeant Thompson wants to laugh I can tell, but, isn’t.

“Oh, come on Serge, it’s not the end of the world, hell, if you want, you can run to the store for me and get some drinks.”

Sergeant Thompson: “Yeah, I’ll help you out a bit, but, I wont help you that much.”

“Well, can’t say I didn’t try.”

Me and Nancy laugh again and then Nancy comes in closer to me and lays her head on my chest and I put my arm around her. I can sleep a little easier now that I know I have a match at Rise to Greatness that actually means something. Sergeant Thompson, Nancy and a few people in their family are going to be there just to watch me. I then, start to think about the Triple Threat Match, I get up off the sofa, and walk into the kitchen, not looking for anything to eat or drink, but, looking for some privacy.

“Michael Carrington, we meet again. It’s been a while, Michael, about four months actually, since Out of Control. Yeah, sure, you came out with the win then, but, something tells me you wont be so lucky this time. Out of Control, I had been back in SCW for a month, after being out for over half a year. I know, you’ll say that I’m making excuses, but, that’s just how it is. No excuses, nothing, plus, this time, it’s a triple threat match. This time, we have Calli Bennett to worry about as well. This time, there is no you and me Michael, this time, it’s all three of us.”

I pull a chair out from under the kitchen table and sit down in it and cross my arms. I think back to my first month back and my time spent going back and forth with Michael Carrington. Then, I think about Calli Bennett, I have no history with her, I have no reason to hate her, as for Carrington, that’s a completely different story.

“Michael, me and you, we go back to Out of Control, a memorable battle. Yeah, me and your boys from Dynasty have a history, a history where they beat me because they had to have Liana Lewis help them distract me. Honestly, I have no idea how the woman distracted me, she’s not really all that attractive. That’s beside the points though, Michael, the fact remains that you had to cheat to beat me just like all your other little buddies from Dynasty had to have help from her to win.”

Calli comes to mind for some reason, I guess talking about Liana did the trick for me to get my mind on my female opponent, Calli Bennett. Although, I can’t say that I have anything against Calli. She’s never done anything to me and I’ve never done anything to her, but, Sunday, it’s every person for themselves.

“Calli, me and you, we don’t have a history. Hell, I barely even know you, but, you’re still one of my opponents for Sunday night. Calli, trust me, I realize what you’ve done here in SCW, you’ve accomplished a lot, now, you’re trying to accomplish an even harder thing to do, become a woman who can compete with the men of SCW, however, the women of SCW are some of the toughest women around, and I’m sure that any woman here in SCW could compete with the men, but, Calli, even though I respect you, I’m going to do my best to make sure that you don’t walk away from Yankee Stadium a winner.”

I still don’t see why we couldn’t have had the show at one of the greatest stadiums of all-time, Wrigley Field. I guess it’s just my hate for the Yankees hatin on Yankee Stadium, but, you know, the Yankees are like Jeff Gordon, everybody hates them.

“Calli, me and you, we’re somewhat alike, we’re both trying to get pushed up the card a bit. Of course, sure, you’ve had more success in recent history than I have, but, that doesn’t matter here. All that matters here is who comes out with the pin and who doesn’t. Only one of us can come out on top, while two of us will walk away from New York, much like the Yankees walk away from over half their games this season, with our heads held in shame.”

The more I think about the match, the more excited I get about it. I’ve mentioned it before, this is the moment that I’ve been waiting for since I returned. What made me even more excited about it was the fact that I actually had a match Sunday night that actually meant something, unlike last year when I faced Riley Addison when he accepted my open challenge the week before the Pay Per View. Of course, there was my Rise to Greatness debut the year before, where I was supposed to face Torch, he revealed he was an actor and basically forfeited the match, all to protect Kassie Khane.

“Now, when it comes to experience at this stage, I think myself and Calli have the advantage, because Carrington, you’ll choke, big time. Why? Because you have no experience in a match like this. Sure, it’s pressure being in a Number One Contender’s match anyway, but, it’s even more pressure being in a Number One Contender’s match at the biggest event of the year. Carrington has never even been at Rise to Greatness. But, he’s still a huge threat in this match, just like you are Calli.”

I get up out of the chair and walk over to the back door, I look outside and then open the back door and head outside. I walk around to the side of the house and then go over to my car and sit on the hood. I lay back and look up at the sky, the blue day sky, with just a few clouds passing overhead.

“Laying here, I started thinking about Breakdown. And I heard what you said Calli. I’m not going to argue with the fact that you called Carrington a thug, but, I’m not an Army drop out there dear. Sure, I left the Army, but, I did it because there was something else I wanted to do, wrestle. I’ve wanted to be a wrestler since I was a little boy growing up, then, the Army came calling and I wanted to protect my country and serve my country. Why? Because I love this country, not because I wanted to be a hero, if I had wanted to be a hero, I would’ve played the role of Batman, but, I didn’t.”

I can’t lay here anymore, I’ve gotta walk around or something. I walk over to the front door of the house and open the door and pop my head in real quick. Nancy and Sergeant Thompson are sitting on the couch watching television.

“Hey guys, I’m gonna take a walk, I’ll be back in a little while.”

Nancy: “Mind if I go with you?”

“If it’s alright with Sergeant Thompson.”

Sergeant Thompson: “Yeah, it’s fine, I gotta hit the road anyway, the wife’s expecting me home pretty soon, so, I’ll see you tomorrow Chris, and Nancy I guess we’ll see you on Saturday night.”

“Alright, see you then.”

Nancy: “Bye, Uncle Darren.”

I walk over and shake Sergeant Thompson’s hand and then Nancy gives him a hug. Sergeant Thompson walks out the door and gets in his car and me and Nancy walk out behind him, and I close the door behind us. Sergeant Thompson starts up his car and backs out of the driveway, and puts the car in drive and heads down the road, me and Nancy do the same, however, not as quick as Sergeant Thompson.

Nancy: “You nervous?”

“Nervous? Should I be?”

Nancy: “Well, honestly, I would be, it’s a huge match for you and it’s a huge night for you and SCW as a whole. Hell, Chris, it’s the fourth annual Rise to Greatness, and the fifth year anniversary show.”

“I realize that Nancy, but, I’ve done this twice before, I’ve been here many times, in this type of match. I’ve been in bigger matches than this, but, this is the biggest match I’ve had since I’ve came back to SCW.”

We continue down the road and Nancy grabs hold of my hand. But, I quickly pull my hand away and put my arm around her shoulders and she puts her arm around my waist. I give her a little kiss on the top of her head and we walk on.

“You know, you would think that I would be nervous, wouldn’t you?”

Nancy: “Honestly, yeah, I would. I mean, it’s a huge match for you, this could change your career, Chris. But, you know, I’ve got faith in you, I know you can pull it out.”

I know what she’s talking about. But, the match isn’t the only thing that I can think of. I want to ask her to permanently go on the road with me. But, I don’t know if she would want to or not, I mean, I know it never hurts to ask, but, really, I don’t want to ask if I think she’ll say no.

Nancy: “Chris, what’s on your mind?”

Okay, I still have no freakin idea how she does that. I don’t even have to look like something’s on my mind, but, she still knows there’s something.

“Well, ok, I have something I want to ask you.”

Nancy: “Go ahead, you know you can ask me anything.”

I take a deep breath, although I do feel a little nervous still, as I’m not too sure what she’ll say. But, you know, it never hurt to ask.

“Actually, I wanted to ask you if you might be interested in permanently going on the road with me. I know it’s a big sacrifice for you to make, but, don’t worry, if you’re with me, you’ll have whatever you need. I make enough money to support the two of us, and also, maybe if at some point you might want to become my manager at some point.”

There’s a silence, and this makes me even more nervous than I already am, it doesn’t really leave a good feeling in my stomach.

Nancy: “Actually, I’ve been hoping you would ask me that, I would love to go on the road with you all the time, and possibly be your manager in the future. I want to be with you as often as possible, Chris, because I care about you, a lot.”

I want to tell her that I feel the same way about her, but, I can’t get the words out, instead I just stand there and smile and give her a small kiss on the lips and she kisses me back. I kind of feel the nervousness leaving me, but, I’m still a little nervous as now, I have to worry about telling her how I truly feel about her. I guess the problems never end.

“We’re just one night away from the biggest show in Supreme Championship Wrestling history. Rise to Greatness, the five year anniversary of SCW. This company as certainly made a Rise to Greatness in five years, in less than twenty-four hours, this is my third time around, but, this one is the most important. This time, it’s all or nothing.”

Sitting here in the locker room at Yankee Stadium in New York City with Nancy sitting on the floor her head laying on my knee rubbing my leg, while I massage her shoulders. The excitement for the show is building with every passing minute. The show gets closer, and I hear the second hand on the clock ticking behind me, I hear Nancy take a deep breath.

“Baby, if you wanna go back to the hotel go ahead, I’m just gonna sit here for a while and take it in. I mean, this is the closest I’ve been to a title shot in almost a year. So, I’ve just gotta let it all in before I go out there tomorrow night and make sure I’m not dreamin.”

Nancy: “Honey, I’m sure you’ll do fine. And don’t worry, I’m fine, I just wanna stay right here with you. Although, I could use something to drink, you want anything?”

“Nah, I’m fine, thanks.”

Nancy gets up and leaves the room, heading out to get whatever it is she wants to drink. I continue to sit there, with the thoughts of being part of this awesome show running through my mind, the thought of winning tomorrow night and the thought of losing is there as well. If I win, I get a shot at the SCW United States Championship, but, if I lose, what do I get? Would it be such a bad thing if I lost? Just then, there’s a knock on the door. I hear the door creaking open.

Sergeant Thompson: “Chris? Nancy? You guys in here?”

“I’m over here Serge.”

Sergeant Thompson and a younger man and a woman follow closely behind. The younger man is probably about my age, twenty-six or twenty-seven, not really build, but, not small either. The woman is kind of short, blonde hair, brown eyes, beautiful, really reminds me of Nancy.

Sergeant Thompson: “Chris. I would like for you to meet my wife and my son. Jimmy, Linda, this is Chris Lawler, the man I’ve been training for a couple of months now, the man we’re here to see.”

“It’s nice to meet you both.”

I shake hands with Jimmy and Linda and then Nancy walks into the room with a Coke and a bottle of water in her hands. She quickly walks over to Sergeant Thompson, Jimmy and Linda and hugs them all.

Linda: “Well, Chris, me, Jimmy and Darren watch you on TV all the time, and Darren talks about how much progress you’re making all the time. It’s really hard to get him to talk about anything else.”

We all laugh and then, we all take a seat in a few chairs that are around the floor. They pull them closer in. Linda sits by Sergeant Thompson, Jimmy sits by his mom, I’m by Jimmy and Nancy is sitting by me. I take hold of Nancy’s hand and she lays her head on my shoulder.

Linda: “So, Chris, are you ready for tomorrow night?”

“As ready as I’m gonna be, I’m excited, yet nervous at the same time. I’m excited because of the fact that I’m getting this shot at the biggest Pay Per View in SCW history, but, nervous for the exact same reason.

Sergeant Thompson: “I know what you mean, I’ve felt the same thing. Our wedding day actually, I was excited because I was about to spend the rest of my life with the woman I loved in front of our family and friends, and yet, I was nervous for the same reasons.”

I think I know what he means, I mean, similar situations, the worries are different, but, we’re both feeling the same thing. Or at least, we were at one point. I kiss Nancy on the top of her head and then get up out of my chair and walk out of the locker room.

Sergeant Thompson: “Where’s he going?”

Nancy: “He’s concentrating on the match now.”

I walk down the corridor and then get to a door. I open up the door without looking to see where it goes to I see the right field seats directly across from me. Then, I see the ring set up, along with chairs beside it. The sun shining brightly down on the field. I’m in the home team dugout. I take a seat on the bench and take it all in.

“Well, Michael, or should I say Silkk as you like to refer to yourself as, it looks like you finally decided to show your ugly ass face. While we’ve yet to hear anything from you Calli. That doesn’t matter though, you’re still in this match, weather we hear from you this week or not, you’ll come in there, just like myself and Silkk and give it everything you’ve got. Why? Because to us, this is the most important match on the whole show.”

I look around me, I lean my head against the wall behind me and close my eyes, thinking about what Michael said about me and Calli in his promo he cut yesterday.

“Michael, last night, when I saw your interview for our match you said that it wasn’t the old Silkk that we would be seeing tomorrow night at Rise to Greatness, it would be a new and improved Silkk. My question to you is, so what? I mean, who gives a damn, I know I don’t. I don’t give a damn about Silkk. I don’t give a damn about the new Silkk, the old Silkk, Silkk sheets, Silkk nightgowns even, the only kind of Silkk nightgown I like is one on the floor after a beautiful woman has taken the damn thing off.”

Wow, that sounded really perverted. I think he gets the point though. As the old saying goes, you can’t teach a dog new tricks. And honestly, I don’t believe that there will be anything new about him at all.

“You know, Michael, listening to your interview about our match, it seemed like you were really focused on taking me down a lot. Although you actually did have some nice things to say for once, and some statements you made were somewhat correct. Although, one thing you said that was totally wrong was that I would determine weather you or Calli would win the match. Honestly, I think that is the worst statement I’ve ever heard. Because quite frankly, I’m gonna go out there and I’m gonna at least make an attempt to win the match. I’m not just gonna be there to help one of you two to win the match.”

I get up off the bench and head up the dugout stairs. I get to the top and then look around at all the empty seats. I imagine those seats being filled tomorrow night with thousands of people. I I head down a row where there’s no seats, the arena isn’t done yet, no entrance ramp, no security rail, nothing of the sorts, I get to the end of the seats and then slide into the ring and walk over and climb up and sit on the top turnbuckle.

“And then, there’s Calli Bennett. Calli, like I said before, you haven’t been seen or heard from yet this week. But, I know for a fact that you’ll be at Rise to Greatness, and you’ll be there in top form. You’ll be ready to go to battle, but, will you be ready to win the war? I mean, you can train, you can do whatever, and you may be ready physically, but, mentally, are you ready? Are you focused enough to win the match? Or, is your mind still on the SCW Women’s Championship? Sometime’s it’s just not your night, will tomorrow night be your night? Or not? There’s a lot of questions hanging over your head Calli, let’s hope you can answer them.”

I continue to look around, still imagining a packed stadium tomorrow night. I just wish that Rise to Greatness was tonight, because right now, tonight, I feel as ready as I’ve ever been for a match that as Michael Carrington said could make you or break you.

“Well, folks, it’s the performance of a lifetime that you’re going to get out of me tomorrow night, and I’m sure that the two of you will be giving your best performances too. But, there’s a question I have for you Michael Carrington, are the Tag Team Championships one too many for you? Are you ready to try your hand at a singles run? Or, is the tag team division where you belong? I know for a fact that the singles division is right where I belong, but, is it for you Michael? And is the men’s division too much for you to handle Calli? Or, are you right where you belong now? You see, there’s a difference in facing women and facing men, and there’s a difference in having a partner and not having a partner. But, there’s also a difference in having to cheat to win a match and being able to do it on your own. I don’t have to cheat, Michael, I know from experience, you’ve been desperate enough to cheat to win, and Calli, I’m sure there’s been a time or two when you’ve had to. So, are you ready to fight cleanly, or will you have to resort to having help again? Think it over.”

I get off the turnbuckle and walk around the ring once, and then, climb through the ropes and hop down to the ground below. I walk back towards the home dugout. When I get there, I turn back around look back at the ring. I raise my arm as if I have already won the match, feeling ever so confident about tomorrow night. I turn completely around to where I’m facing the ring and smile. Then, I feel something grab my waist. Then, I feel a head on my side, and I look down and there’s Nancy just embracing me.

Nancy: “Baby, tomorrow night, when you get back into that locker room, I’ll have the champagne ready, and we’re gonna have ourselves a little celebration.”

“Don’t get too cocky just yet honey, I’m feelin good about the match, but, I’m not feelin that good. Either way, I think I’m going to come out a winner.”

I put my arm around Nancy and turn back around and then we head down the dugout stairs and I open the door and she walks through and I follow close behind her. I get through the door and don’t even bother to close the door behind me. We get to the locker room and again I open the door and let Nancy walk in first and I walk in close behind her.

“Guys, tomorrow night, I’ve got a feeling something good is gonna happen. Tomorrow night, I want you to have that place rockin durin my match, because it’s gonna come down to the fans, and I think I’ve got the people on my side.”

Sergeant Thompson: “Well, Chris, I don’t know about the rest of the fans that’ll be there tomorrow night and all the millions watching at home, but, you’ve got four people in this locker room right cheering you on.”

I smile, and then, I know, that I’ve got everything I want outside of wrestling, great friends, a great girl, and now, it’s time to get what I want professionally, and that starts at Rise to Greatness.
