Taken from my myspace on the whole Kanye West Vs. 50 Cent thing...
______________________________________________________

Ladies and gentlemen...IT'S ON! It's September 11th, 2007 and 50 Cent and Kanye West are competing against each other to see who has the hottest album. While it would normally come down to taste, these two musical heavyweights are going to be using their record sales to determine who is the biggest artist out right now. The stakes have been raised a little, as 50 Cent has sworn to retire from rap is Kanye manages to out-sell him. While this has brought some extra media attention to this friendly rivalry, I really doubt that 50 would seriously hang up the microphone over this. This wouldn't be the first time a raper has threatened to retire, after all, The Game said he'd retire if he didn't sell a million records in his first week. He ended up doing around 750,000. In my mind, this is just a publicity stunt, but 50 Cent has the money to retire if he is serious. You've also got to keep in mind that 50 Cent signed a five album deal with Interscope and so far he's released three albums (including Curtis). With rumours circulating that his next album, titled "Before I Self Destruct", is close to completion over a year before its scheduled release, along with news that his fifth and final album would be a "Best Hits" album, 50 Cent could retire from the rap industry and focus upon movies without making his contract void. While alot of people have been hating on 50 Cent for some time now, I think he is a guy who has made some mistakes and attempted to put them behind him. He's courted controversy and it has resulted in increased record sales, occasionally blowing up in his face. Personally, I think that rap needs someone like 50 Cent. Take away 50 Cent and there are only a handful of artists big enough to carry the torch.

The stage has been set perfectly for this competitive edge which will begin today. While rap in general has been in a steady decline for some years now, 50 Cent and Kanye West have hardly been affected, still maxing out with millions of records sold and so much money stacking up behind the scenes that it's not even worth thinking about. Now their paths have crossed, after 50 Cents album was moved back and Kanye West had his moved forward. Both refused to budge, so now the competition is on. I've had both albums for around two weeks now and I'd like to guarantee you that both albums are solid pieces of work. I'll just break them down a little to give you some extra information on them.

Kanye West: Graduation

This is Kanye wests third album and, I'll admit, I'm not such a huge fan of his. I got his last album (Late Registration) and felt that it was too soft, not to mention the fact that Kanyes voice gave me a headache on pretty much every song. The main aspect of Kanyes work has always been his production, which has been quality ever since he burst onto the scene with "Jesus Walks" (I think "Through The Wire" was a false start and didn't get everyone behind him, "Jesus Walks" definately captured the attention of the mainstream). Everyone from The Game to R Kelly has called on Kanye West to help them push their albums further into the mainstream, creating masterpieces along the way. With this power in the industry (similar to that of Scott Storch and Timbaland), Kanye undoubtedly has a phone book full of established stars who would be more than winning to lay down some vocals for his album, giving Kanye some serious options for this album. While Kanye has undoubtedly been growing both as a producer and as a rapper, he has also been gradually forcing his way into being a household name, not an easy feat by any stretch of the imagination.

This time around it's more of the same, with Kanye Wests voice still a major problem in all of his tracks, not to mention his distinct lack of talent lyrically, but the production keeps every single track on point. His lead off single "Stronger" is an original feeling piece and that vibe is carried through the entire album. Every track feels original and uninfluenced by the rest of the goings-on in hip-hop, creating a fresh vibe through the entire album. As a guy who isn't Kanyes number one fan, I definately think this is one of his better albums and I'm seriously considering buying it to compliment the rest of my CD collection. Even tracks like "Drunk And Hot Girls" (where West reduces himself to some off-key singing) some how manage to feel inspired and original, something which isn't evident in other rap albums.

Album Rating: 9/10
Trust me, you have to add this to your collection!

50 Cent: Curtis

First of all I'd like to admit that I am a 50 Cent fan. While I don't think he was very smart in calling out Nas, Fat Joe and The Game with the "Piggy Bank" track on his last album (and subsequently having Game crush him and G-Unit with a series of phenomenal diss tracks), no one can doubt his contribution to the rap game. Everyone and their mothers have heard of 50 Cent, turning this rapper into a franchise equal to the likes of Eminem and Tupac Shakur. His business sense has also earned him hundreds of millions of dollars, not just through music (though he has released numerous artists through his G-Unit Records and helped to cement their status in the game) but through business ventures like G-Unit Sneakers (in collaboration with Reebok) and Vitamin Water (recently purchased by Coca Cola). Lyrically 50 Cent has always been on point and with the numerous records he has appeared on around the world, 50's grip on the mainstream has been gradually tightening despite the diss records being passed around on the underground circuit. With hip-hop heavyweights like Eminem, Dr. Dre and others all on his side, few could seriously expect to cross Curtis Jackson and genuinely have a chance of crushing him. The Game came damn close, but 50 Cent responded by making hundreds of millions of dollars from his Get Rich Or Die Tryin' movie, before branching into the vitamin water business and sealing himself a few more hundred million to throw his bank manager into a seizure. Needless to say, 50 Cent is as much a heavyweight in the rap game as he is in the business world.

The "Curtis" album is more of the same from 50 Cent. It has some real bangers on there (such as "I Get Money" and "Ayo Technology") not to mention street-ready tracks (such as "Fully Loaded Clip" and "My Gun") so the basic bases have been covered. There are also some more different tracks on there, such as the fetish revealing "Peep Show" featuring Eminem, as well as the soul jerking "All Of Me" featuring Mary J Blige, but despite the variety on there, I still don't believe that this album lives up to 50 Cents debut album. Yes, there are some club bangers, some street albums and some original concepts shown, backed with high quality beats and household names for collaborations, but over all "Curtis" feels like an extended version of "The Massacre." Don't get me wrong, "The Massacre" was a solid album, but I believe that every artist needs to show growth between projects. Sadly the only growth 50 has demonstrated is the growth to his budget. While this doesn't ruin the album, it does remove some of the excitement of listening to a new record when you fell you've heard something similar before.

Album Rating: 7/10
It's not 50 Cents best work but it's a good album and worth the money.

It's a sad fact...that's one of my top 10 favourite albums of all time. From the production to the lyrics, it was quality. Now 50's trying to be too street, then too soft...he hasn't found middle ground at all.

And he won't find that ground! Thats why I say Kanye has improved lyrically, and his production will blow the dick off ya body! Cause he is just cocky and fire! Think about it, he is a social activist like I am trying to be for kids I work for, and he gets his point across, and nobody fucks with him, he aint gotta be hard, and he aint gotta be soft, he is himself, and he talks about shit you can relate to...minus the expensive as shit clothes, but anything else he talks about, you can relate to, with 50, I cant relate myself to an amusement park...they are boring....I get money, I got bread, but not 50 bread, ya know? lol....Kanye!

Alright MC...I'll give you this round.

Just wait 'til Em and Dre drops at the beginning of next year though. Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit are gonna be back!

In truth, Kanyes album surprised me. I HATED his last one and it was a waste of money for me (hense I now download the albums before deciding if they're worth my money...seems fair that way) but this one seems alot better.

So yeah...Kanye won this round. Question is, will 50 Cent retire?

Well I know Dr. Dre is dropping Detox, and I know Em is dropping a new album cause his daughter is middle school, and tahts when he said he drop another one....where she would be older....and Kanye is dropping another one called Univercity hahahaha next year...and then if 50 is telling the truth he will be dropping another album at the end of this year...and then him and Jim Jones are in works of him joining G-unit! yes, that is what I said....so expect One Eyex Willie joining forces with the man that goes by Fiddy!

Oh yeah...Music is back....I mean for awhile I was listening to RnB music for awhile cause I love rnb, but with Kanye out and then knowing Dre got something in the works, '08 alot of artists will have to step up big time because Dre and Kanye has set the bar high as hell.....so expect great albums to be coming out from big time artists, i can see TI dropping another one, Jeezy, Dro, hell i will go all out and say that Pharell and his boys will come back with something, and then you got Em, and hell I even think Ludacris will try again.....

Alright, I bought BOTH albums today. I downloaded Kanyes album and MC send me 50 Cents album...they both seemed worth the money so I bought them.

Yeah, I'm a downloader...but I try before I buy :D lol

I've done the same thing with Kingdom Come (Jay Z), The Re-Up (Eminem & Co), The Massacre (50 Cent), Rotten Apple (Lloyd Banks) and I wish I'd done it for a few questionable albums on my CD rack...

Im just happy that 50 cent lost three weeks in a row. I remember few weeks ago he was saying how a lot of albums are going to be decreasing. Now look at him, after three weeks his album sales decreased about 50% while Kanyes only decreased about 40%. Not only that, but Kanye dropped to number three on the third week while 5-0 dropped on number 5.

Good to see the teddy bear destryoying the gorrila that never was :D

I don't understand all of the anti-50 Cent shit. Like, for real...most of us would do anything to be on this guys level. He just talks shit to build up the hype...and at the end of the day, it had everyone talking about something other than "HipHop Is Dead" which, to be frank, has been pissing me off.

50's album is a good album. The next G-Unit album will most likely be a good one. The 50 Cent album after that will no doubt be a good one. I mean, the guy is as consistent as is possible - he can't go back and replicate that first album. That was gold. Like Nas and Jay Z, they've all given their all to the game already - now he's just enjoying it.

50 said it himself, he has made so much money that he doesn't even have to rap anymore. He could retire, buy an island and see out his days there - but while he's still such an influencial figure in rap, he might as well throw his weight around a little.

Controversy sells.

thats what I was thinking too. At first I got really pissed at 50 when he dissed my favourite MC;Nas.

But after i found out that people arnt really trying to bring 50 down, im thinking to myself why should I?

Honestly, after 3 years screaming g-unot and f 50, im starting to kinda like his attitue. Why? Becuase ...me and the dude have things in common.

one thing: our lips are the same

second thing: I bet my beard is going to look like his.

third thing: Our birthdays are on July 6th.

fourth thing: We are chorus driven artists.

fifth thing: You know how 50 sometimes does that mouth thing when he kinda closes his mouth and it seems like hes cocky and serious in the same time. I do that too...well I got it from him.

But the thing is that...Im still not on 50s side. I love to watch his downfall, that dude snitched and ran from the hood. But now that Im in Germany im also disliking the hood. I remember back then when i was in Lynn everytime I walked alone on the streets, fear overcame me because dudes be grimy. I never was sure if I was going to make it home safe or not. So yeah....

Its still

g-g--g-g-g-g-UNOT!!

(But i dont think 50 will mind because he does afterall own the trademark. B)

"that dude snitched and ran from the hood"

I disagree. He didn't snitch...the only case I can think of where you could get that from was Ghetto Qu'Ran (me thinks..? It was an early record, that was the first that came to mind) when he mentioned shit about Supreme and all. At the end of the day, he was writing about what he was seeing...and feds have no right to use one artists song against another. If they could, then all these artists claiming to be dope dealers wouldn't be free today.

As far as running from the hood...I don't think so. He moved from the hood, yeah. Wouldn't you? You have money for big, glamorous houses and shit...do you really want that in the middle of the ghetto? Ice T tried it and what happened? Dude got his house robbed...so now he lives with the rich folk.

At the end of the day, you can't hate on someone for bettering their situation.

And on that note, I need to get some sleep. Work tomorrow. New job sucks.
