For me it's weird. I almost ALWAYS enjoy writing the promo portion, but I only like writing the CD if it's something that's REALLY awesome, which is only like 35% of the time. I guess I don't like describing the scene and what-not all that much, as it just gets tedious to me sometimes.

how bout you guys

Say CD for MV, Mariela and Madison since their stories are fun and entertaining and cutting a promo for them is a little rough.

Promos for Gigi, Loved the idea of her video blog to reach out to her fans

Katie on the other hand, well I've been told she is like a Female version of Edge.

Always liked doing my promos more than my CD, but with this new character I'm enjoying developing him a lot more, and I feel like I'm better at it as well.

To be honest, until/unless I am in a feud with someone or roleplaying against a character I know lots about, I really do actually prefer to write the character development as you always know where you stand with that as opposed to being shot down in flames with a mistake or miscalculation you make in your smacktalk. Then again, if someone does make lots of cliches or errors in something they say about my character, the promo then becomes the part I look forward to the most, so its swings and roundabouts in those situations

I personally loathe CD. I think the CD can come out of the stuff written for a match, and a lot of times people focus way too much on the CD aspect of an RP over the part directed at the opponent.

For me I think it depends entirely on the individual roleplay. Sometimes I get engrossed in the CD part of my roleplays, if it's setting a story up for the long haul, but sometimes it can feel like I’m just putting someone in because I don't want my roleplay to be all smack talk.

It does help to know something about the opponent though, otherwise your promo section can be a little tough to put together, especially when it comes to making it personal rather than generic...

I used to be all about the promo and I'd spend ages working up things to say to people but now I just kinda find that bit tedious most weeks. Last week I "celebrated" by eighth year since I started eWrestling (although in fairness I've probably only been active about five years of that since I tend to take long breaks when feds close) and I guess after all that time just talking trash to people has gotten old and unless I get really engrossed in a feud most of the time I just find it an annoying chore, but my more recent characters (Christy Matthews & Ravyn Taylor, and I'm trying with Zoe) I've really enjoyed the CD more than the actual promo bits so much so that when one of my opponents no-showed last week I didn't even bother doing a promo for my second RP and just posted the CD. :D

Eventually I'll hit a stride with Zoe, I'm still trying to figure out who she is right now other than a blonde airhead.

Ace/CD. Chad/Promo. But without one or the other I hate your rp. So both are important.

For me it's both. I like the CD because I always have a lot of fun with it, and I love writing the promo portion because it gives me an outlet for any anger or frustration I might have. I get to channel it all at my opponent, and verbally cut down a non-existent person.

I think i suck at trash talking i mean some times i get a good insult in there but other then that my trash talking isnt as good as others with dilly i was all about charcter development and sometimes my mr felt forced even to me i think im doing it alot better now and i feel like my trash talking on kayl for our rtg was my best in awhile. But usually the cd is my bread and butter with jabs thrown in there when nessary and not forced.

I also love writing the CD parts to my rps, they are the most fun to write and the most creative. How many times or ways can you say you are going to pin someone or beat them to a pulp? As Kris said, I also SUCK at smack talk, although Dave/Hurse says I’m getting very good at it, I still have my doubts. I am the Queen of one liner, and I enjoy adding those to my CD part of my rps. I can get some really good jabs in and make it funny at the same time.

I also absolutely love reading Rps with CD, But If they are pure smack talk, I get bored really really fast, and will just skim over the rp if I even continue to read it at all. Sorry, but that’s what I do. Some people can testify that I have PMed them or messaged them on MSN when I really liked their rps.

This is what I like in a rp. I want to get to know the character; not just his ring talk or his promo part trying to degrade his opponent. I want to read about their lives, their family and friends, to me that’s what's interesting. I will find out how they act in the ring and on stage on the Results, Olek does a great job with the segments and the matches.

I realize you need MR (Match Relevance) too, it’s just that too much takes away for the rp in my honest opinion. A healthy dose or balance of each is what I look for. And I do tend to like the humorist rps. The ones that can make me laugh or chuckle out loud are the best, to me anyways.

That’s why I have so many secondary characters, like Kassie & Skylar, I don’t have to add that annoying smack talk into their rps, so there is no pressure at all, just the fun of writing a good CD rp to advance the characters personalities along. :P

I guess in the end, everyone has their personal preferences, and as long as you are happy with your rp, then in the end, that’s all that matters, really.

Chad, I think Matt and I both can out smacktalk you.

That's why Apotheosis was such a good faction. Top three smacktalkers ever. =P

And yet talking smack is, in good promo-writing, such a small portion. Fortunately, most people think that if they just trash-talk, they're set and thus few people actually know how to write a good promo.

For the record, I personally prefer to write a promo and it's always my focus for my roleplays. CD is just for me to establish backstory and establish the mood of the character going into it. It's one reason I rarely do anything particularly focal with my CD. I focus on my promos.

EDIT: I had a brief piece here on promo-writing. However, I chose to take it out just to not distract from the purpose of the thread. With that said, I'll be using that and further explain the first part of my post likely in a future Cynical View as I think it helps to always bring that back up (Plus....I have a few more things that make me want to jump out of a tall building and land on very sharp spikes to list :))

I like to think that I occasionally have moments of brilliance with both CD and MR parts in promos with most of my characters.
Like, I'll never reach that level with Reckless again that I did when I was working my ass off to beat Miller, and that kinda saddens me.
Craven's kinda fun to write for (CD-wise anyway) when I get into in-depth discussions about weird ways and places to have kinky sex (he's a porn magnate, and recently there was a set-up to filming a scene in a wind-machine that simulates sky-diving, which is what I'm referring to).
Dan Dare allows me to get all super-serial with my promos, and Evermore's just kind of a jackass that everybody loves because he's not JUST a jackass, he's a jackass for the PEOPLE (heh).

But over the past year, Rick Rohl became my absolute favorite character to write for, because I could just riff in his promos for pages at a time if I felt like (and one time a few weeks ago, his promo came out to about 4 pages BEFORE I even got to the MR part), and not feel like any of it was forced. I just come up with an idea, and work with it from there, and with there being absolutely no pressure for Rick Rohl to be as championship-caliber as...well, MOST of you SCW vets who've won the big one...I can just let it flow freeform.
It always disappoints me when I miss a deadline and no-show with Rohl, because I always know I could've written something fun and at least mildly interesting for him, had I started writing a day before.

I hope to reach that level of fun weirdness when I debut Agave Tequila.

To Exeter:

1) Experience (I've been judging roleplays for over six years now. I also happen to know what I hate and generally what I like.)

2) I've been watching wrestling for 20 years. Since two years old, I've been watching wrestling. I'm a wrestling fan, but more importantly, I've watched good wrestling and bad wrestling and I know what is a good promo. This is where a lot of my opinions on promos come from. What makes me want to see a match?

3) I've worked in education (It's helped me gain confidence in my skills, but I'm frequently asked to review things for people)

4) I've been writing for a while and I've been put through the ringer in terms of my writing ability (including have profs flat out tell me my writing is bad). I've learned from some of the most meticulous profs, so I've managed to work at my writing (and still do to this day).

All four of those factors I would say has sharpened my judging. Again, some people may not agree with my opinion, and that's fine. I'm always willing to defend my opinion with more than just beliefs, as I hope others are too.

That's what it comes down to at the end of the day as well, opinion. All judges ultimately judge RPs slightly differently, there is no formula that can be used universally. What makes anybody a judge of an RP is whether or not they enjoyed it more than the RP of the opponent, and if you're willing to come out and say WHY you enjoyed it more and thus give others a chance to better themselves then you're a-ok in my book!

After thinking about this question for awhile I enjoy writing CD's more then shoots. Even though I have seen an improvement in my shoots over the past couple of years, I know I am still behind a lot of handlers in shoot skills which is evident when I take on a shooter who I know is light years better then I am. Plus my subpar record with most of the characters I run speaks for itself. Results don't lie right? Currently my Blake Mason character is below .500 but I did win a championship with the guy so you can call it a spade a spade I guess.

And it's especially hard to out shoot your opponent when you have no material to work with. And it's easier to shoot when you're on a winning streak or one of the more established characters in the federation you're in. Shoot is cool when you have leverage.

Since I consider myself more of a creative/story writing anyway CD'ing is right up my ally. What prevents me from doing it as often as I know I should is when I read all these CD's promos with the character arch's, I never centered my CD's around an arch. My CD's are more match related then "I have a life outside of wrestling" related. But I'm gonna get back into CD writing on a consistent basis because nine times out of ten my CD will be light years better then any shoot I write.
