I certainly hope it's a live action trailer for a game, because if that's a movie it was full of fail. |

Not sure where you see the fail, I loved it. The series is in desperate need of a reboot both for the game coming out this year (which from what I've heard, is going back to it's 2d roots.) and the movies. Makes the characters seem more realistic rather then just their own universe. That's gotten pretty stale. Should be interesting to say the least. And hey, if anything it can't be worse the the original MK movies (aside from the first one which rocked) or dare I even say.. the MK tv series. |

I just don't see the purpose of making things "realistic" it's based of a damn video game. Thats why so many games to movie adaptions have failed. |

Works both ways though. The thing is with a video game based movie, or a game based off a movie.. 90% of the time one or the other will be fail if not both. Not saying it can't be done though. Batman The Dark Knight was an awesome game and an awesome movie. Anyways, my point is here would be that this seems more "inspired" by MK and just using the name and characters. But the story itself seems solid and gives good reasoning into everything. Plus I love how broken down the town is. I haven't looked into what the new MK game is looking like but I wouldn't be surprised if it follows a similar pattern to that trailer. 2nd part of my point is this.. if that did not have the MK name and you saw that trailer. You would think it seems like a decent movie. Or at least I would hope you do because the premise is solid. |

Agree with Mark on this one and plus they showed my favorite three MK characters: (Sub Zero, Scorpion, Reptile - yes my favorite in that order) so I am more than psyched. Plus this will be R-Rated as you can see what happened to Johnny Cage. I personally cannot wait I wonder if they will bring back the Cyborgs. I'd love to get another clip maybe to see how they enhance Sub-Zero's fatality moves or if they bring Frost, does anyone know which way they went with the MK that introduced her (like which storyline they are choosing to make cannon since every fighter had a storyline)? I am more than pumped for this. Cannot wait. |

I've never really been a fan of Mortal Kombat, always prefered the Street Fighter games. That's probably why I don't relate to it more like you guys. Certainly won't be something i'll be watching i know that even thuogh it does have Jerri Ryan in it ![]() What, she was hot as seven of nine  |

I'm with Jon, this movie looks full of fail. How can you have Sub-Zero or Scorpion but yet consider it "real"? Are they expecting us to believe that the guy has a cybernetic implant that will allow him to fire something in to somebody to the trademark Scorpion move, or that another guy can randomly freeze people using... what, a freezer and a bucket of water? Sorry, I can't see how Sub-Zero can work. I only hope the clip there then expands in to a whole other universe/magic realm from there, because the thing that makes the MK games fun is the wildness of the characters. If they're all just "oh yeah, I'm completely human and a bit crazy, and oh look I sewed this thing in to me" then that's just lame. I always liked Shang Tsung and the idea that he's a shapeshifter who can steal souls, or Goro being a four armed monster. Without those characters it's NOT Mortal Kombat, it's just a bunch of guys using the names. You may as well have Jean Claude Van Damme show up and pwn them all and call it "Bloodsport vs. guys with Mortal Kombat names". If you're going to use a premise then fucking use it, don't take the names and change everything about everybody. That'd be like making a new Batman film and saying "yeah, but while he calls himself Batman actually he's just a guy in a baseball cap with a bat on it who mows people down with a chaingun". |

Actually, if you look at the trailer they hint to the various special abilities of things. What I think Mark may be referring to with the realism (and at this, this is my take), is that the they're taking a new angle that makes each of the fighters more everyday people (for the Earthrealm, it generally was that even in the official canon). It then allows them to introduce the tournament and what not in a different way than well, you're the best one here, let's go fight (I did love the first movie, though the second...I watch much like I watch old WCW. It's to laugh my ass off). Plus, given that the teaser trailer looks to be at least well made, I'm guessing they didn't have the cash in the budget for this trailer to add special effects (and thus none of the ice freezing, scorpion missiles (though there is one shot of one going through someone's neck) or Shang Tsung's soul stealing. Regardless, I'm figuring it's for the game. I only say this because Linden Ashby and Christopher Lambert, I believe, have both confirmed they're signed onto the new Mortal Kombat movie as Johnny Cage and Raiden respectively. Neither are in this and Cage is played by someone else. In any case, the one thing I think we all can agree on is that regardless, the grittier feel and blood lend itself as promising signs for any live-action Mortal Kombat action. |

Ok, so unless they just make Raiden an old guy who likes thunderstorms then I'm far happier at hearing that. Without the fantasy element it's just NOT Mortal Kombat as I said, it's just guys with the same nails punching each other. <_< A grittier, R-Rated version of the first film would be pretty cool though. If they use what they have in that clip (or similar) to set up the Earth competitors and then have them realise, like in the first film, that they're way out of their depth and are about to get dropped in the deep end when they hadn't expected to be then I'd be willing to get on board with that. |

You can have fantasy while operating with some realism. You can have realistic backstories and presentation which having people with special powers (Plus, Raiden is a God of earthrealm.). Technically, the first movie had that realist aspect, but it was less played up (Liu Kang was just an American immigrant who had left his Buddhist routes. Raiden was in a Buddhist temple. Johnny Cage was a movie star. Sonya and Jax were part of Special ops. Kano was an assassin chased by special ops. Even Shang Tsung came off normal, until he had to) ![]() And they better have Christopher Lambert...he's perfect for Raiden (and one of my favourite actors :P) |

Oh yeah, definitely. Just from that clip it seems like they were trying overly hard to give scientific reasons that all the characters did what they did. Reptile wasn't reptile anymore, for example. in the games he's an actual reptilian creature who's race is almost extinct, in that clip he's just a weirdo with a birth defect who likes to kill people. Baraka was just a psycho as well, no otherworldly connection. If they do the same to ALL the characters that would suck, and it seems from that clip that that's what they're doing. Hopefully it's not though... |

Well in that case, I'm with you. I personally also am a traditionalist, but I just like a grittier feel to it and willing to give it a try. So I like that they have a semi-realistic thing. I don't care for what they did with Reptile (though I actually like the Baraka angle). Plus, courtesy of Jeri Ryan, this looks to be an attempt by a director to persuade WB to let him take the helm of the movie and his vision: http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/ne...ombat-Clip.html |

They should definitely let the guy make a film, and go one of two ways. Introduce more elements of fantasy in to it so that characters like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Noob Saibot and Shang Tsung are possible or remove the MK element all together and just make a kick-ass fighting film. Seriously, it's been a while since there was a decent film like that... |

I will just say this....if they do MK, give it a solid plot, have some good character development and let that drive it. Annihilation sucked for two reasons: 1) It tried to just include four trillion characters and 2) The acting sucked. The second seems fixed if that guy gets the job, but for the love of god, please make sure the first one is done too. |

Oh hell yeah Jeri Ryan can mothalickin GET IT! You know, like full hardcore sexual GET MY MOTHAFRIGGIN MOJO ON get it! lol I don't see how you guys can think it's full of fair. It's not suppose to act like it can actually happen in real life. If that's the case then you guys must hate 95% of every other action/horror movie ever made. Like Speed was sayin, it's just making them more human in a sense if that makes any sense which i doubt ha. I myself thing it looks mothafriggin dope. Going to be a hell of a movie I think. I think their going to take it too a whole new level. And I know this isn't the game lounge but what'd you guys think of Mortal Combat vs DC the game? I thought it was friggen sick nasty! It's graphics were realistic I thought, the only pain was you had to pause the game every 5seconds if you were getting your ass taxed, to find a super move to land on them because god know I'm not memorizing 30 characters friggen super moves lol. But I thought it was a cool idea with sick nasty game play! |

Making them more human? I can understand where they're coming from, but they are still butchering the whole thing. Barakka isn't human in the game is he, yet they made him human in this movie pitch to WB, why? It's like in that piece of shit streetfighter movie, they made charlie guile's best buddy into blanka. They couldn't just have some giant ass green dude who pwns bitches with electicity from the jungles of brazil.Or how about dhalsim, he was white and was only indian looking because he got burned ina fire. Humaninzing things doesn't nessercarily make them better imo. |

If this gets made(still only a possibility). Then I'll start getting pumped about it. From watching that movie pitch, it looks good. I'd give the guy a chance to make it. Hopefully something happens. Favorite characters throughout the series of games. Johnny Cage, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. |

There's a reason they're not human in the first place, right? If you want things that are human and gritty and real, make up your own fucking characters! I could make a new universe where I have Bugs Bunny as a an alcoholic guy who dresses up in a bunny costume and masturbates, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as four massively deformed Russians who were born from a mother with radiation poisoning and two lovers, Ken and Ryu, who are heading to the mountains in cowboy hats to get away from it all. But little do they know they're about to be hunted down by THE JOKER, a six year old girl who painted lipstick on her face who enjoys murdering people with a machete. Now that film could be a massive success, but all I've done is just randomly take characters from somebody else and completely change them, rather than just making up my own characters. That's all that film has done. If you want a film about a guy who voluntarily committed himself to prison who goes to hunt down and kill a guy with implants in his arms, a weird freaky guy who was deformed at birth and the guy who he thought he'd killed years ago but actually didn't in a tournament hosted by a guy with a weird name then MAKE that film, but don't give the characters Mortal Kombat names because they're NOT Mortal Kombat characters. |

I like gore in movies if it actually progresses the storyline. In just what i saw in the trailer, there seemed to be a lot of gore simply for the point of gore and shock value which makes it completely unnecessary. It seems that people are quick to forget the unbelievable terribleness of the old Mortal Kombat movies, or the old Street fighter movie (or the NEW Street Fighter movie for that case.) It seems really stupid to make a movie based on a game that is nothing but fighting (Also why that horrible abomination known as the DoA movie was a complete bomb.)When will Hollywood learn that fighting games do not make good movies? |

Ok so I took a shower and thought about all the points put forth here. First thing I've noticed. There is a market for a MK movie. No doubt this thread proves it and the numerous thread out there on the net talking about this. However, the census is split evenly between hate it or love it. I haven't seen any in between comments. As to be expected with fans of a video game franchise, especially a popular one like MK. Now the major complaint is that the characters are "too human". My theory on this would be that the director doesn't have a ton of money to make a CG live action film. (Ala James Cameron). Therefore, he chose to cast it in a way which can still be believable (as long as everyones powers are explained, or at least given a half assed explanion to such as "he was born that way.") CG directing takes quite a bit of money is basically my point. But wait! Why don't they just wear costumes and heavy makeup. Well that's why he's the director. I'm sure it could work, but the way he's going it seems like the characters look darker/grittier which is all the rage these days. Everything needs a dark gritty reboot. Also if this is just a trailer teaser for his movie pitch, then it would also make sense not to blow your entire budget on making the actors look like aliens but to rather establish the characters instead. And I think the trailer does a damn good job of establishing the characters and setting. Ok.. so it may not be what he'll eventually do.. they're still raping Mortal Kombat. Look at xyz over there, it doesn't look the way I want it to. Well if you wanted all of them to look like they would. Then Skorpion would have had a burned off face, and Baraka would have looked like a huge freak. Reptile would have looked cool.. but I dig his style now. (Not to self.. Reptile as a secondary villain in next Spiderman movie please.) Second Theory.. Oh but they killed off Johnny Cage and it's not the right actor! This can't be real. It can.. kill him off early in the movie.. and then... THE REAL JOHNNY CAGE SHOWS UP! WATTTAAAAA! Because it was a body double or something.Fuck it, if we want aliens in our movies we may as well let met get away with that one. So that's my theory on what's going on here. Low budget, teaser to get a license to do the movie, and if it was the real movie.. why show off one of your characters getting killed off in the trailer? Makes no sense.. unless he's a BODY DOUBLE WATAAAAAAA. Also if anyone is interested in a proper fighting movie, there is a fan made SF that is epic. Just came out recently and I give mad props to these guys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2ZXSzaUIBQ That is the link. Enjoy it. Btw EDIT.. yes the "movie" is 3 minutes long. But it's still the best SF movie ever made lawlz. Although I would like someone to pick up on that and hire those guys. |
