Just one from me this time...but a good one I think. Good luck fella LOCATION – NEWQUAY POLICE STATION Shaun and Pixie once again find themselves in the waiting room of the police station waiting for Detective Swann to make an appearance. Shaun was beginning to feel more and more irritated, as this was time that could be spent travelling to the Church and finally ending this nightmare which he had been embroiled in for way too long. He takes a look at his wristwatch, it had been fully half an hour now since the anonymous phone call, and he felt that time was being wasted whilst he waited. Shaun: Where the hell is he? It can’t take that long to finish off a doughnut surely Pixie: Got to be patient Shaun, a few more minutes won’t matter. Shaun almost snaps at the implication, of course it mattered. As far as he was concerned, every second was one that had been wasted. Instead of going mad at Pixie, he ignores the comment and puts it to the back of his mind, and once again glances at the stair way from which Swann would arrive. Pixie: Try to relax Shaun, if the phone call was the truth, it won’t be long now Shaun: And what if it’s not Pixie, what then? Pixie: What do you mean? Shaun: What if he was never caught and we end up living with this shadow over us. How can we move on, have a life together if we can’t get rid of this stigma? Pixie puts a reassuring arm around his shoulder, and her hand on his cheek Pixie: We won’t have to Shaun, they will catch him. We just need to have faith. Shaun scoffs, though not meaning anything by it towards Pixie Shaun: Faith…not got a lot of that right now Pixie is about to respond when she see’s Detective Swann appearing at the top of the stairway. She motions with her eyes and Shaun turns his head jumping to his feet. Swann walks over to them, with what looks like a dossier in his hand. Swann: Shaun, twice in one day…I am honoured Shaun: Look we don’t have any time; I think I know where Douglas is Swann looks confused Swann: You do…its not that long since I saw you last, and need I remind you… Shaun: I didn’t do anything, though you lot dragging your heels over this makes me wonder why I didn’t. Swann: So come on then, enlighten me Shaun: We were just leaving the station when I took a phone call. I didn’t recognise the number, but I answered it anyway, and it was someone who knew about everything. The girls, Douglas… Swann: Hold on, girls as in plural? Shaun: Yes, he must have Holly as well as Melissa…and the caller said they were alive Swann: And you didn’t recognise the number…or the voice? Shaun: No Swann: Then what’s to say it wasn’t a crank call? Shaun: It wasn’t…I mean, I don’t know, but they knew everything what was going on. Surely you have to check it out? Swann: I don’t know Shaun, things like this get in the papers all the time; someone just could be making lucky guesses. Where did the caller say we would find them anyway? Shaun: St Francis Church…Truro. Shaun was feeling deflated by the conversation by now, and was beginning to wonder why he had bothered. It would have been far easier to sort it out without involving the police. Swann: Yeah, I know it…its abandoned now Just the mention of the place seems to have garnered some interest from the Detective, as if suddenly he was taking the possibility seriously. Swann: Gut feeling Shaun, do you think this was just some crank winding you up or the real deal? Shaun: I think it was real Detective, and let’s be honest it’s the best lead we have. Swann gives it some thought, before nodding his head Swann: Ok Shaun, I’ll head over with an officer and take a look. Shaun looks horrified at the suggestion Shaun: No, that will take too long, ring the nearest station and let them investigate the church Swann: And look stupid for following up on what is more than likely a bogus call? Shaun: Screw your professional pride, just make the call Swann. Swann shakes his head again, and turns on his heels Swann: Don’t worry Shaun, if Douglas is there, he won’t know about it until it’s too late. If this lead is true, we’ll get him for you Swann walks away, and as he does Shaun shakes his head. He really wants to have a go at the Detective, but realises the situation is pointless? Pixie obviously senses his annoyance, and links her arm in his Pixie: You did the right thing Shaun…the police are the right people to deal with this. Shaun: Then why do I feel like he is going to get away…again. I should go… Pixie: No Shaun…you’re staying here, with me A LITTLE LATER LOCATION – ST FRANCIS CHURCH TRURO Melissa and Honey sits in the cramped and draughty cell, the only light coming from the small window far from reach. It had seemed like many hours since Douglas had been there last, but in fact it was only a couple. Even so, their relief is obvious as the door us unlocked, and David steps inside. If she had the energy, Melissa would have made a run for it, but she didn’t. She was starving and dehydrated, and had lost the will to fight. Douglas looks at the pitiful specimens in front of him and laughs, pulling a mobile phone from his pocket. He dials a number, and places the phone on speaker so that the girls can hear the tone. After a few rings a voice kicks in… “This mobile phone is switched off…please leave a message after the tone” Douglas laughs again, but speaks anyway, as if no one answering had really humoured him more than if someone had Douglas: Shaun…it’s time for you to come to a decision my friend. As you have probably realised by now, Melissa isn’t dead, and in fact I am keeping her captive, as well as the useless specimen I tried to get you framed for assault with. We both know you don’t have a clue where I am, so therefore heres the deal. If you don’t want the death of these two beautiful women on your conscience forever, you sign over everything, the houses, the business and any money you have in your savings. That’s the price…you have precisely three hours to give me your decision. Here’s hoping you listen to this message before then hey Cruze. Everything you own, and I won’t harm a hair on any of their heads…you don’t accept the deal, they die… He terminates the calls, and then turns to Melissa Douglas: So what do you reckon Mel…will he pay? Melissa: Only person paying around here will be you. Douglas: Yes, you’re right, for holidays, new sports cars…all from my new found wealth. Melissa: You’re crazy; you can’t get away with this. Douglas: Oh I can Melissa, and I will. And the kicker in all this, the two of you won’t be walking away either way. You’re deaths will live with him forever whether he pays up or not…is that ironic? Melissa is speechless, and Honey just bursts into tears the whole thing getting just too much Douglas: Don’t cry dear, it will soon all be over. He opens the door and then shuts it behind him, climbing the steps to the office above. Taking a seat, he places his mobile on the desk, looking very happy with himself. It would soon all be over, and he would have what was rightfully always his, and he couldn’t be more pleased that he would be done with the Cruze family once and for all. He closes his eyes, and ever so slowly begins drifting off to sleep…until he hears the car pull up outside, and the slamming of car doors OUTSIDE THE CHURCH Swann stands, looking up at the church, which has obviously seen better days. He knew it hadn’t been used as a church now for nearly ten years, and the building was certainly looking that way. He turns to the officer he has brought with him, and motions to the front entrance Swann: Stay here, you see or hear anything you radio me straight away no questions asked. The officer nods and takes his position as Swann opens the large wooden doors, when open with the stereotypical creaking of many horror movies. Switching on his torch he walks into the main church, which looks in a far more state of disrepair than the outside did. Concrete has fallen from pillars, and the wooden pews are covered in a thick layer of dust. However run down the place way, by the disturbance of several items it becomes quickly apparent that someone has been here recently. A noise from a far corner suggests that they still are. Swann: Who’s there? There is no answer, just the silence of the night. He does a sweep with the light beam but sees nothing. Swann: Come on man, pull yourself together. Another noise from behind him, and this time he swings the torch around which lands on the face of none other than David Douglas. Though it was he who he had come to find, he is still surprised to find he is actually here, larger than life Swann: David Douglas I assume? Douglas: The one and only…and you are? Swann: Detective Swann, Cornwall police, I’ve been looking everywhere for you, you’re quite elusive. Douglas: I like to keep myself to myself…people don’t disappoint you then. Could I be so bold as to ask how you found me? Swann: Anonymous call from a law abiding citizen Douglas: Wow…wonder who that could be, not many of those left in the world. Swann: Either of the talk, where are Melissa and Honey? Douglas: In the basement, I’ll show you if you want Swann is surprised that Douglas is openly admitting his guilt, and senses a trap Swann: So you can lock me in, I don’t think so. You just take it easy right there, and I’ll call my colleague to cuff you before we do that Douglas: You mean the officer you stationed outside, I’m afraid he’s taking a nap…sleeping on the job huh, what the police force has come to? Swann: If you’ve hurt him… Douglas: Relax, just a tranquilizer, he’ll be fine. Afraid the same cannot be said for you however. He reaches into his pocket, and pulls out a gun, pointing it through the darkness at the detective. Swann’s eye widen, knowing he has been backed into a corner Swann: You don’t want to go do this route Douglas. Are you really going to shoot me, because your going to have to? Douglas: I might do, it all depends if you do as you are told Swann: Well, I’m going to walk towards you, and I’m going to take that weapon away from you, so you had better make a decision quickly Douglas: Stay right there… He cocks the hammer on the gun, pointing it directly at the face of Swann who stops walking and holds out his hand Swann: Pass me the gun Douglas, you still can Douglas: Take a left, and walk to the basement Detective Swann, you have three seconds Swann: You don’t want to do this Douglas: Three Swann: No one has to get hurt Douglas: Two… Swann: Douglas, don’t do this Douglas: One… Swann: Don’t… David’s fingers hovers over the trigger, his eyes narrowed on his target. Swann closes his eyes, waiting for the inevitable explosion of noise. Douglas: Time up… David’s head suddenly jolts forward, his eyes filled with confusion. He seems to be stuck in slow motion, until finally he falls. Swann opens his eyes, trying to peer into the gloom, to try and figure out what has happened. Swann: Shaun? Is that you? His eyes widen as the figure steps from the darkness, a large plank of wood held tightly in his hands ???: No…my name is Douglas Dan Douglas steps from the shadows, looking at David slumped on the floor Dan: And I’m his Father. TWO HOURS LATER LOCATION – SHAUNS HOUSE Shaun hangs up his mobile and places it on the table, a look of total and utter shock on his face. He walks over to the drinks cabinet and pulls out a shot glass, filling it to the brim with Jack Daniels and downing it, enjoying the warmth as it makes the journey to his stomach. All the time he realises that all eyes are on him, waiting for him to speak patiently, until finally Pixie is the first to break the silence. Pixie: Come on then, what did he say? Shaun: It’s over, they have him…they’ve caught Douglas Pixie: Oh my god…really? Kloe: And Melissa and the other girl? Shaun: They are fine…everyone is fine. The girls are being taken to the hospital to check them over, but everything is going to be ok Orlando walks over and puts his hand on his brothers shoulder Orlando: Finally huh? Shaun: Damn right bro…damn right. He pours himself another drink, not offering one to the others, but there were other things on his mind. Swann had told him the whole story, and yet Shaun felt he needed to go through it in his head before he shared. This time he doesn’t down the shot, and instead walks around the sofa, taking a seat next to Pixie who puts her hand on his thigh, squeezing it gently. Shaun places his hand on her, before beginning to speak Shaun: Well, in a nutshell, the anonymous caller was right; Douglas was holed up in the church with the girl’s prisoner in the basement. Douglas even held Swann at gunpoint for a while, and was about to shoot him when it seems fate intervened Orlando: Fate? Shaun: Yeah, it seems that our anonymous caller was actually Dan Douglas, and he clattered David over the head with a plank of wood before he could shoot. Kloe: So he shopped his own son? Shaun: It seems so…seems Dan had a threshold, and David had crossed it. I guess he did it for David’s own sake. Pixie: Wow… Shaun: Wow indeed. The warmth from the previous shot wears off, and Shaun replaces it with the second measure, this one having more of a desired effect that the first, dulling his senses and almost immediately bringing him to ease. For the first time in forever he felt like he could properly sleep a deep sleep from which he wouldn’t want to wake for a long time. All he could think of right now was cuddling up to Pixie, and then when they woke, finally they could start again, start over without all the shit holding them back. Orlando: So what happens now? Shaun: I don’t know, I don’t think he will be able to afford bail. So he’ll stay inside till he goes to trial…then he’ll go down for a very long time. It’s over bro isn’t it…it’s really over? Orlando nods, and a smile snakes onto Shaun’s face. He closes his eyes, and before he knows it he is asleep, totally unaware of the chatter continuing around him. Pixie brushes his hair back, and he doesn’t even flinch. Orlando: I’ll ring Michael now, tell him can stop looking his daughters safe. Kloe: I’ll come with you… Kloe puts her hand on Pixie’s shoulder and smiles, getting one in return. Kloe leaves the room, leaving Pixie and Shaun alone. Pixie looks at the roaring log fire, and then to Shaun, looking doe eyed. Pixie: I can’t believe it’s finally over Shaun Shaun opens his eyes and nods, kissing her on the cheek, showing he wasn’t really asleep Shaun: That’s it Pixie…finally we can move on Pixie smiles, looking contented Pixie: I’m so sorry, for everything I ever did to you. I hope you can forgive me Shaun: Pixie… Pixie: Yes Shaun: I forgave you a long time ago. You’ve always been the one…always. He closes his eyes again, and Pixie does the same, the two of them falling asleep together in front of the warmth of the fire. THE YEAR THAT WAS The scene fades in, a traditional Christmas picture with tinsel wrapped around a large Christmas tree, and presents stacked below it. Cards hang above the fireplace, in which a flames dance, casting shadows around the room, and in front of that fire sits Shaun Cruze, glass in his hand of what looks like whiskey. He watches as the flames go about their routine, the heat on his face soothing. Tilting his head ever so slightly to one side he begins to speak, calmly, and methodically Shaun: Ten months ago I entered the unknown. I joined a company with whom I knew I had little experience, a company which I knew would provide far ore competition that what I was used to in the IWC. I had my doubts about the place, it had as many critics as it did fans, but I signed on the dotted line, and pretty much rebooted my career. I did that not knowing if I would be successful, not knowing if I would be able to scale the same heights I had in the IWC, and I did it with a heavy heart, and leaving everything I knew behind. I knew it would be difficult, of course I did, but I certainly didn’t know that 2011 would turn out to be such a rollercoaster of emotions. I mean, it all started so well, the winning streak that lasted twelve matches before coming to an end against Shawn Winters. I managed to get the fans on my side; something easier said that done in this company. I began to make a name for myself, for being the type of human being the fans wanted to see, someone who didn’t abuse the company he worked for, but actually gave a damn about the industry and what he was doing. In that time I won the Adrenaline Championship, I claimed some big scalps along the way, but of course with any highs, there has to follow the lows. Losing the title just a month later, losing my World title opportunity with Shawn Winters, failing in the Elimination Chamber, these are all notable losses no doubt. But adversity, finding yourself up against it, these is the things that make you stronger, not weaker, and it is these things that I will take with me into 2012. Reaching forwards he pokes at the coals, revitalising the fires. He smiles at the statement and its relevance to his opponent at the End of year special, a man who was without doubt his hardest opponent to date Shaun: But before I can look forward to the New Year, and Collin Cole in the first Breakdown of 2012, first I must once again step into the ring with one of the best the SCW has to offer in Jake Starr. Once again I find myself cast in the role of underdog as lets be honest, Starr has beaten far better opponents that me. He’s one of those types of guys that come with a huge reputation, on a par with Shawn Winters, Shilo Valiant and the rest. He’s a top, top wrestler in the SCW, and I know that beating him would be one hell of an upset. He’s beaten most in this company, and down the line no doubt a world title shot will be forthcoming. But you know something Jake, as I’ve found with most people just like you…all of the above doesn’t make you any less of an idiot. Now, I don’t mean that to be disrespectful, because I mean everything I say. Beating you would be one heck of a name on my CV, but for God’s sake, you’ve spoken of how 2011 is a disappointment to you, because you don’t end it on top of the pile, but is there really any surprise in that when it seems to me you don’t have a clue what’s going on around you? It seems to me like you come from that school of thought where you speak first, and think later, because quite frankly you have made it perfectly obvious you don’t know the first thing about me. And that’s fine in essence, you probably don’t care about me any more than you do Shawn Winters, but if you’re going to talk crap about me, at least do some homework first bud, so it as least LOOKS like you have bothered to prepare You want an explanation, an example of your idiocy, how’s about the fact I have admitted, MANY times, that going after the world title was probably a mistake. I wasn’t ready, and Winters kicked my ass, but then again hasn’t he been doing that to you at pretty much every opportunity of late? More evidence? How’s about the many, many times I have said that winning the IWC world title was only because of the circumstance, and not because of any amazing abilities on my part? Yeah, I know this, I figured it out ages ago, and yet you are still telling me this now? But you don’t stop there of course, you then go on to name three opponents who you went through to claim the title, in an attempt to back up a claim that I wasn’t ever going to dispute. Good idea you’d have thought, except for the fact I’ve beaten two of those three dignitaries, one of them twice. And how the hell was I given chance to reign over a ‘depleted’ IWC roster, when the place shut down on the very night I won the title? I can give you more of course. I’ve done nothing since win the Adrenaline title right? Except for winning a Scaffold Scramble match, NARROWLY losing a world title match, competing with credit in the Elimination chamber and then, currently, I’m one half of the number one contenders to the tag titles…did you miss all that? And whilst I’m on the subject, what you done of late huh? Yeah…precisely He shakes his head, and takes a sip from his whiskey, enjoying the warmth as it travels down his throat. Shaun: Look, you’re not an idiot, I accept that, my emotions ran away with me, but surely you can see how making these POINTLESS allegations is destroying any credibility you still have. Everything you have stated in your silly little rant, I’ve covered and dealt with months ago, so with all that stripped away, what did you actually come up with that was fresh, and different? Fact is there was nothing, nothing that Winters didn’t say, nothing that Matthews herself didn’t say, nothing that I haven’t said myself countless times in the past. The reason for this? Honestly I don’t have a clue; however I would like to offer a theory into what is going on with your career right now. From listening to you, the tone in your voice, the stuff you are coming up with, you’re beginning to sound more than a little desperate. No, not desperate about facing me, I wouldn’t be so arrogant as to suggest that. No, when I say desperate, I mean because it seems to me that you feel that bit by bit, your best days are passing you by. When you say that slowly but surely you are getting back to your old self, it sounds to me that you’re not trying to convince me, but yourself. Could it be Jake, in all honesty, that you are not sure if you can climb that mountain once again? I mean, has there ever been a time in SCW history when there has been so many individuals vying for just that one contendership? Who would have honestly thought Katie Steward would be right up there? Certainly not me, but with hard work she got there, only just coming up short against Shilo with an amazing effort. I think I speak the truth when I say its harder than ever to climb that ladder right now, so with that in mind, are you sure that you still have what it takes? Just ponder, just for a moment, if you do lose to me at the End of Year special, with 2011 already thrown in the trash, would one more defeat turn in into your very own annus horribilis? You think I need this match Starr? You think I need it to become relevant? I counter that allegation by simply throwing it back at you Jake…because whereas I don’t need this match in the slightest, a win would be great but not critical because it’s just another step towards the end zone, it’s you that needs the victory my friend…because its YOU who is in danger of becoming irrelevant. This isn’t my time; I figured that out when I faced Shilo Valiant. I know my place; my time will come in the future. But you Jake, you are in danger of becoming its past. He brings the glass to his lips, finishing the contents and then wiping away the excess from his mouth. He brings his right leg up, placing it on his left and then clasping his hands in front of him. Shaun: So Jake, so ahead and mope about how shit 2011 was for you, when the bells chime for 2012 breathe a huge sigh of relief that it’s all over for you and you can look forward to this new start. I’ll be doing the same, but without the relief, because 2011 was a good year for me, because it was the year of finding my feet in this company, and putting all the bad habits I had learnt to bed. I assure you, every single defeat I have experienced this year, I have done with humility, and with understanding, and I have learned from each and every one, and should you win, I will do exactly the same, and take what I can from losing to a former World Champion. I’ll do that, because I’m not hoping for 2012 to be better than this last year, I KNOW its going to be. I know I’ll have a part to play in the SCW, I know that I will come of age…and, same as you, not wanting to be cliché… He smiles mischievously. Shaun: I predict that whereas one STARR will fade, mine will continue to burn more brightly than ever before. Why? Another smile, this time accompanied by a wink Shaun: I guess that’s something you are about to find out He brings his legs down, leaning forwards, the grin still on his face. It’s on that image that the scene fades. |
