One might believe that the mood among Adrenaline Rush would be a little more on the positive side in the wake of Retribution. After all, despite a few unwarranted issues later on in the night, the battle royal to determine the number one contender to the U.S. title had come down to the three members of the group, and it was a given at that point that one of them would be walking away with the title opportunity. The fact that it came down to the three of them was, in and of itself, a huge statement. Unfortunately, things were still far from alright in the Adrenaline Rush camp. Craig couldn’t have been prouder to see Tyler be the one to ultimately prevail and gain the title shot, knowing how much of a necessary confidence booster it was for his lifelong friend and a good sign that, at long last, the blonde’s title drought might finally come to an end, even if missing out on a title opportunity stung a bit as far as he was concerned. The feeling wasn’t entirely mutual in regards to Stacy, however, who only seemed more and more frustrated that it wasn’t her standing tall at the very end instead. Craig had seen Stacy’s frustrations start to boil over firsthand and it was clear even she was conflicted on where to actually go from here as she left the hotel feeling like she needed to be by herself right now, and unfortunately Tyler was still feeling rattled from everything that had happened and taken his own leave for the time being, wanting to be alone as well for a little bit to clear his head and try to figure a few things out. Naturally Craig tried to talk the ex-caffeine addict out of it, but there was no getting through to him this time. This left Craig feeling frustrated himself, and not because of anything in regards to himself. He’d made it quite clear when he’d spoken in regards to the battle royal that he’d prefer if either Tyler or Stacy would take it as opposed to him in the end, and sooner or later he’d figure things out and get himself back in the title hunt. He’d been the most recent champion of the group, however, and his desire to put the careers of those close to him ahead of his own felt like a greater top priority. That was a big reason why he was looking forward to the Breakdown that was going to happen here in Atlanta this week: after what she’d pulled at Retribution because of her own envy, Craig was glad to go from trying to restrain Stacy to getting the chance to literally knock some sense into Regan Street all because she wasn’t just handed a U.S. title match simply because she suddenly, out of the blue, once again had a problem with Amy Chastaine. Craig: This is just getting ridiculous at this point… Craig couldn’t help but make that remark to himself as he sat beneath a tree in one of the parks in Atlanta – the name of it escaping him at the moment because he’d pretty much just went wandering around the city after Tyler took off and barely paid attention to the fact that he’d arrived here. He’d been too lost in his thoughts about how to help Stacy get back on track as well and put an end to her frustrations as well as trying to keep Tyler from mentally and emotionally burning himself out before his U.S. title match – whenever it would be – with Regan’s attack and Stacy’s frustrations weighing on him. He could only wish it were that simple, but he unconsciously reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the envelope that he and Tyler had been gifted by Corin, still unopened after all these weeks. He knew that wherever he was right now, if Eric wasn’t frustrated about Torsten ending up in a draw against someone he felt was an “inferior opponent” in the likes of Konrad Raab, he was probably re-watching the battle royal and taking some kind of twisted delight in the fact that the match came down to the three Adrenaline Rush members and only one of them would be able to win in the end. The concept of tearing open that envelope and seeing what Corin had given them to perhaps bring Eric down once and for all was extremely tempting in that moment, but Craig felt himself resisting once again, trying to justify to himself that the fight was far from hopeless just yet. Craig: Torsten couldn’t get it done against Konrad, something everyone in Adrenaline Rush managed to do. They underestimated him and now they’re on the back foot because of it. They’ll be too busy worrying about him… we’re in the clear for the time being. It wasn’t the most stable of reasons, but Craig was sticking by it as he kept staring down at the envelope, not caring that he was starting to freeze a bit since the snow in Atlanta had been a nightmare so far, and even being used to it when you live in Denver all your life couldn’t make a person completely immune to frigid conditions. The cold did allow Craig a rare (as of late) moment of calm to try and clear his head and sort through everything sitting in front of him, and that’s when a new thought came to mind. There was no doubt one other person who would be very vocal about how the battle royal turned out, and that would be his father, who the raven-haired powerhouse already knew was going to go on a tirade about how he allowed himself to be beaten by his “athletically inferior” friend with a title opportunity on the line. Craig really had no reason to Talk with the man knowing how he was going to react, but he might feel the need to put up with it momentarily if it meant talking to someone who might really be able to give him some idea of where to go from here. Taking a deep breath and letting the cold expose it to the world, Craig set the envelope in his lap and pulled out his phone to make the call. Sure enough, the voice that answered was the one he really didn’t want to hear. Mr. Thomas: Hello Craig. To what do I owe the pleasure of this sudden little phone call? Craig: Look dad, as much as I would’ve hoped things had changed between us after that stunt you pulled a while back, I already know what you want to say to me. You’re disappointed that I’m not the one that’ll challenge for the U.S. title, I let Tyler get the better of me, etc. Who don’t we just skip past the bullshit this one time? Mr. Thomas: You’re damn right I’m disappointed! Seriously Craig, you’ve only had four matches this year, and the two that actually mean something are the ones you screw up on! As much as I want to respect my only son for actually growing a set and proving he’s a man at long last, you’re not giving me a whole lot of reasons to call myself a proud parent right now. Hell, if you knew I was going to try and get it through that thick skull of yours, then what was the point of calling here to begin with? Craig: I didn’t call for you… I called to talk with mom. If you’re done being a selfish bastard, can you please just hand the phone to her? Mr. Thomas: And why should I Craig? Considering you walked out on our family all those years ago, and all because of your problems with me I might add, what makes you think she’s going to want to talk to you now? Craig: Because I know her better than you think dad, and she’s the only person I know who might be able to answer a few things for me. Maybe I should put it this way: if you really want to see me ‘get back on track’ so damn badly so you can go back to maybe respecting me and what I’m trying to do with my life even if it’s not exactly what you had in mind for my future, then you should let me talk to her to get some things straightened out so I can walk down to that ring Wednesday night, kick Regan Street’s ass both to help my career and to pay her back for what she pulled at Retribution, and maybe find myself with a title shot down the road since I’ll have put down a former world champ. Craig wasn’t surprised to hear the annoyed grunt from the other end of the call, but it was shortly followed by the sound of movement and a brief muffled conversation that he could only just barely pick up his dad’s voice from. After a bit more noise from the other end, Craig finally heard the voice he was hoping to hear in the first place. Mrs. Thomas: Hello Craig. It’s… a bit surprising hearing from you again. Craig’s mother was far more passive in comparison to his father. While she certainly wasn’t afraid to stand up and speak her mind, she tended to do so only if someone outside of their family had a direct problem with her or was trying to embarrass her in public or “get one over” on her for whatever reason. When it came to their family, she preferred being more reserved and in the background when conflict arose, mostly because she loved her husband and children with all her heart and didn’t want to give anybody the impression that there were any significant problems laying beneath the surface. As much as her husband verbally pushed her around at times, he didn’t have any reason to hate her and it was just his stubborn attitude trying to get its way, which is where Craig got it from. One thing he definitely got from her, however, was the need to put others before yourself for the sake of an entire family or group as opposed to just looking out for yourself and what could benefit you the most, something her husband really could use a few lessons on if Craig could be honest. He never had any issues with his mother beyond wishing she would stop taking a passive approach to every little family conflict once in a while, and it was easy to tell he felt closer to her than he did the man he honestly had more in common with. Craig: Hey mom. I’m… I’m sorry I haven’t really called you in a long time, and for the whole thing about me just up and leaving to live with Tyler by ourselves. Mrs. Thomas: I completely understand Craig. You made your feelings about your father no secret, and as much as I wish we could just all get along and be one big happy family, I’m not going to force you to have to put up with a situation that doesn’t make you feel comfortable. Craig: That’s… actually kind of related to what I was hoping to talk with you about. I think I might’ve discovered something else I inherited from you, and I’m honestly not sure I know how to go about approaching it. You love dad and can’t see any reason to stand against him, even if he can be a selfish asshole at times, even to you. I don’t know if you’ve heard or not, and I’ve been meaning to tell you but wrestling keeps eating up all my time and dad’s always the one who answers the phone when I call it seems, but… I’m engaged now. Mrs. Thomas: That’s great news to hear Craig! It’s alright if I’m a little late to the party, I know how hard it can be sometimes given the conversations you and him tend to have. You really are growing up… even if your father doesn’t seem to think so at times. Craig’s face contorts into one of annoyance, but not because his mom kind of cut him off. It was more because of the loud grunt he’d heard that clearly suggested his dad was still nearby, trying to perhaps eavesdrop on the conversation, which wasn’t surprising given the kind of control freak he tended to be at times. Thankfully they only had one landline in the house so it was easier to keep someone from trying to listen in, but it still bothered Craig that his dad seemed that eager to try and get something out of a scenario that didn’t directly involve him at all as far as he was concerned. Craig: Thanks mom. But… the thing is… my relationship with this woman is starting to draw a few parallels to how things are between you and dad sometimes. She’s been getting really frustrated and irrational over these frequent speed bumps in our careers, to the point where she’s starting to feel irritated towards Tyler just because he beat both her and I for a title shot last weekend. And yet, despite how she acts at times, I can’t find it in me to really respond to her the way I feel I should at times, mostly because I’m afraid to lose her. With so many other issues on my plate right now, I don’t know what to do… I’m having a hard time trying to figure out what’s really the right and wrong thing to do about pretty much everything. How have you gotten so good at putting up with dad’s bullshit so often without losing your mind? As Craig started getting more into what he was saying, he felt his eyes slowly drift down from the snowing sky towards the envelope that still lay in his lap, not wanting to mention anything about what Eric’s been doing to try and make things worse and what he had that could potentially put an end to it along with whatever was left of Craig’s sense of morality perhaps. That was an entirely different can of worms and he didn’t want to drag any more people than he felt he had to into it. He got no response from her for a minute, and then he heard some shuffling around on the other end of the line. He felt confused, part of him worrying that his dad had managed to hear and was trying to force his way back into the conversation to tell him off, but the Denver-born bruiser soon realized his mom was just relocating to continue the call as he heard a door close before her voice chimed in again. Mrs. Thomas: Sorry about that Craig, I just wanted to get away from your father before I said anything. You know how he gets and I really don’t want to give him any reason to think you’ve ‘turned me against him’ when that’s far from the case. I can’t say I’m honestly surprised though… I think there’s just a part of me that feels like I need someone in my life that isn’t afraid to push back but knows what’s considered ‘too far’ in that respect, and it seems like both you and your sister ended up getting that as well. Craig: Ruby? Little miss spoiled princess? Mrs. Thomas: Currently dating a guy who treats her well, but isn’t going so far as to worship her like a princess or a queen and isn’t afraid to call her out on some of her flaws. And I can tell you the same thing I told her: I think it’s good to have that in a relationship. There is no such thing as a perfect relationship Craig, and I was in plenty that seemed like it before I met your father. Having someone in your life that isn’t going to push back sometimes to help you become a better person just means you’ve found someone who could make your problems even worse without meaning to. I know I come off as a pretty passive person around your father, but what you kids never got to see was how emotional he can get at times. I do push back when I need to, but I do it in a certain way so he doesn’t have a meltdown but also doesn’t just hurt himself thinking he’s ruined everything. I think with how he was raised he never got a proper handle on his own emotions… still, I can’t tell you exactly what to do, because what works for me might not work for you. Whatever problems you have Craig, just know that even if it doesn’t seem right at first, the only truly wrong answer is the one you believe is going to cause more harm than good. Sometimes, it might be worth giving it a shot anyway, because if you truly care about someone, then sometimes your instincts might be blinded by your feelings. Craig: Why is it always a pain in the ass trying to find the right thing to do? Mrs. Thomas: If it were that easy Craig, then maybe you wouldn’t feel like you need those close to you. But even when things seem rocky, things will only fall apart if you let them, and I think you’ve heard your father ramble on enough about giving up so easily. Craig: Heh, true… thanks mom, I really needed this talk. Mrs. Thomas: Don’t ever hesitate to call Craig. As much as he’ll never admit to it and wants to be stubborn, he misses talking with you, and I would love to hear from you more often if you get the chance. Craig: I’ll keep that in mind… I love you mom. Mrs. Thomas: I love you too Craig. Please take care of yourself. With that, the two exchanged their goodbyes and the call came to an end. Craig just let his phone drop into his lap, resting on top of the envelope he’d been staring at intently for the last part of that conversation. As tempting as it was, with a newfound clarity he resisted the urge to look inside the envelope, feeling he’d know when the time would be right if it would come to it. As for the other issues, he was going to have a talk with Stacy the next chance he got and go from there, because he knew he needed to make it clear to her that she was far more capable of succeeding that she gave herself credit for, and if being more blunt than usual would be what it took to snap her out of it, then it was worth a shot. As he slowly stood up and tucked his phone and the envelope away, he knew there was one other issue he’d need to brush off like the snow covering him, and while he’d been reserved about it at Retribution… Breakdown was going to be an entirely different story. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It should be no surprise that our scene opens up to find Craig inside, and even if the idea of just shooting something from his hotel room seems bland or overdone, it’s hard to really hold it against him when you notice the curtains are open behind him and all that’s visible beyond the window is a blanket of white as far as the eye can see. Mother Nature hasn’t been very kind to the city of Atlanta as frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall persist regardless of how badly people want it to end for safety concerns and simply wanting things to start heating up so they can enjoy going outside. Still, the snowstorm outside somehow pales in comparison to the quiet storm that’s building up inside the room, because while Craig is trying to maintain his composure now, it’s clear it’s probably not going to last for very long. Craig: I know there are quite a few people out there who are no doubt chomping at the bit to hear me vent about Retribution. After all, I had an opportunity to become the number one contender to the U.S. title and I was denied by my best friend and tag partner as his hand was held high at the very end. Surely I’m angry and I’m going to destroy everything we’ve built for god knows how long at this point all because one opportunity got in the way. After all, that’s how this business works, right? Groups live and die by the opportunities put on the table, and since I lost out on one that ended up being claimed by a friend, that means I have to stab him in the back and go on some kind of tirade about how I carried him the entire time and he owes everything to me and so on. It’s the end of Adrenaline Rush as we know it and a few parties are ready to get started in its wake, right? For those of you who still doubt us even now, do you see how sad and pathetic that all sounds when it’s said out loud? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Adrenaline Rush isn’t going anywhere. Tyler won that U.S. title opportunity fair and square and I’m proud of him for it, as a good friend should be. Yeah, I’m a little upset that it’s not me, but considering everything the poor kid’s been through in his life already I can stand here and honestly say that he deserves it far more than I do. Maybe the bigger thing to take note of is the fact that the battle royal to reward that shot in the first place saw Tyler, Stacy and myself as the final three, and while you guys may not think that’s too impressive when you consider that some of the names in that match were former world or U.S. champions in the past and at least one person happens to be the guy challenging for the TV title this Wednesday night, it’s actually pretty damn impressive that the three people that are always being doubted and bet against were the only ones left fighting it out to see who would get to walk away with that opportunity. Tyler deserves this… there will be other opportunities for both Stacy and myself to pursue and we’re going to earn them, even if some people just don’t seem to understand that the world doesn’t revolve around them and has to stop and reward them every time they feel they deserve something. Of course, that’s not how it works as far as you’re concerned, is it Regan? Craig’s eyes slowly narrow into a glare as he says the one name that people have no doubt been dying to hear him address, and somehow the tension in the room seems to get even thicker now that he’s become focused on it. Most people would’ve figured it would be a given since Regan made it no secret that the battle royal participants were targets for her because the very idea of the match clashed with her desires, but any hopes that she’d be too distracted with the match she actually had on that night to really bother with it were nothing more than dust in the wind now, and Craig had no plans on staying quiet about it any longer. Craig: Do you know what the saddest thing about all of this is Regan? Believe it or not, it’s not actually anything in regards to what you did at Retribution. The saddest thing about this whole situation is that at one point in time, Tyler and I had a lot of respect for you. After all, you’re a former world champion, you’ve been a dominant force in SCW for longer than most people want to admit, and even if we didn’t always agree with the methods we could admire how you never took anything lying down and always stood up to fight whenever someone actually tried to push you around. Hell, we still remember back near the beginning of our SCW careers when your husband David Helms chose to face us on his retirement tour, and even though you didn’t have to and could’ve kept focusing on your own title aspirations, you set aside that one night to team with him and give us a hell of a match, and when you guys won you were willing to shake our hands and agree with David’s sentiments that we had a bright future ahead of us in this company. What happened to you Regan? It’s truly a sad sight when someone you once respected goes and throws it all out the window, especially when I’m not going to be surprised to hear you tell me how little that actually meant to you, even though from at least the two of us you had the respect you so desperately crave and threw it away. And for what? All because SCW didn’t bend over backwards and hand you a U.S. title match just because when you fell short against Selena for the world title, you decided on a whim that you suddenly needed to try and headhunt Amy Chastaine because of a grudge you left alone for almost an entire year before remembering it existed? I’ve only had one title reign since coming here and it’s only lasted a week. Hell, poor Tyler hasn’t held a title period since we showed up around here. Do you know why you don’t see us throwing a tantrum over it or trying to take out every person in front of us to make ourselves the only possible challengers by default? It’s not simply because we’re nice guys and wanting to earn all of our shots is only part of the reason, to be perfectly honest. The rest of it is because we’ve learned that SCW management, regardless of how you feel about their decisions sometimes, isn’t too likely to just hand an opportunity to someone who just wants to destroy everything in their path if they don’t get their way. They want to see the Regan Street who can go out to that ring and put on a hell of a match, not the Regan Street who lays out someone because they have what you want and expects them to just give it to you. It wouldn’t surprise me in all honestly if anything I said to you right now pretty much fell on deaf ears. After all, you don’t see us as a threat, and the one and only thing on your mind is becoming U.S. champion so you can shove it down people’s throats until you get your next opportunity at the world title. The problem with having that kind of tunnel vision, however, is the fact that you blind yourself to the possibility of any speed bumps along the way that could ruin everything. Except… I’m not exactly a speed bump, I’m a goddamn spike strip. It’s at this point that any semblance of calm Craig was hanging onto is now gone, and what we’re left with is a man who is very clearly seething, a feeling Regan no doubt is all too familiar with. Perhaps if it was any other scenario, including if he’d been the one attacked because he’d won that battle royal, the raven-haired bruiser would be more annoyed than anything else and would’ve been glad to try and give her a wake-up call if their paths crossed, but the fact of the matter was that she’d attacked someone close to him for no reason other than her own selfishness over a title shot, and that was a mistake she would come to regret. Craig: Let me ask you something Regan… a few months back, you went on the warpath in regards to Shaun Cruze because he was trying to guide AJ and you feel he failed when AJ was attacked, so you took matters into your own hands and kicked his ass with every tool in your arsenal. What makes you think you can get away with causing that same stunt a few months later? What, did you think that if you attacked Tyler for earning a U.S. title shot that I was going to just stand back and not say anything? Or were you so caught up in the fact that if your opponent’s name isn’t Amy Chastaine then they’re worthless to you that you have free reign to do whatever the hell you want and nobody is going to get in your face over it? You had no problem trying to run your mouth about Tyler when he was lying on the ground or Stacy when I was trying to hold her back, but sometimes the ones that stay quiet are the ones you want to piss off the least. To put it in a way you’ll understand while you’re busy trying to prove you have more rage than The Incredible Hulk: when you attacked Tyler, you fucked up. Every single title you’ve won, every opponent you’ve ever put down, every moment where you got to stand tall at the very end and have the last laugh… come Wednesday night, every single one of those things is irrelevant because nothing you have ever done from the moment you first set foot in a wrestling ring is going to give you any sort of advantage against me. When you felt the need to attack my friend all because you want to make it clear to the world just what kind of petty, selfish bitch you truly are, any hope of a wrestling match with me went out the damn window. I’m coming down to that ring on Breakdown to fight, and if you aren’t ready for a fight then I’m going to make it crystal clear to you that like it or not, Tyler gets first crack at Amy and the U.S. title and the only thing you can do is shut the hell up and wait in line. I doubt Amy’s going anywhere so you have more than enough time to try and face her again, and the more people you piss off the longer the line will be you have to get through first before you even get that match you want so damn badly. On Wednesday though, Amy and her friends can wait their turn because I don’t care if I beat you or not, I’m not leaving the Phillips Arena until I’ve run it through that thick skull of yours that it doesn’t matter how much you yell or scream or what your last name is, the more you try to push people around the harder they’re going to push back, and there are some people out there who just don’t give a damn about the details so long as they get to knock your teeth down your throat. If you wanted respect, you jumped off that boat Regan. If you really want to prove you deserve a U.S. title match as badly as you claim you do, then prove it on Breakdown, because I’m coming to prove that when you’re so focused on the end goal that you aren’t paying attention to anything else, that’s when you’re going to get run over by someone just because you aren’t the only person in the world allowed to have a vendetta, and no amount of screaming or threats or tantrums is going to dig you out of the grave I’m going to send you into, especially when you dug the damn thing yourself to begin with. As soon as he finishes talking, Craig quickly shoves his hand into the camera and the feed immediately cuts to black. Craig’s made it clear he doesn’t give a damn about Regan or her plans, and since she won’t give a damn about him or Adrenaline Rush then she’s lost all right to any claims that he shouldn’t even share the ring with her on Wednesday night or that Tyler doesn’t deserve the title shot over her. After all, nothing she does is going to change the fact that he has that shot, and all her words aren’t going to mean anything to Craig because as far as he’s concerned, the person he’s stepping into the ring with isn’t Regan Street… it’s simply a selfish bitch who needs a reality check that the world doesn’t revolve around her no matter how much of a goddess she thinks she is to demand such things. |
