Cynical View of Wrestling (Episode One: Wrestlemania)

Who wants two hours of Olek's brains, Wasley's insight, and my inane bullshit? Well click the link above, and enjoy! We learned a lot recording this one, and hope to do more.

Can I make a serious suggestion for future stuff like this? Do it in multiple parts.

Two hours and ten minutes is loooooooooong!! For something like this you could do it so you record all three "parts" at once but then you have clearly defined subjects you're going to cover in each part, and listening to three 40 minute videos covering, say, the under-card, the mid-card and the main event, or something like that, would seem a lot easier... plus it makes it more consumable in the sense that I could listen to the first part, go to bed, then listen to the rest tomorrow, rather than leaving it paused.

I find the same thing with other people's stuff, which is partly why I watch the channels I DO watch, because when they have stupendously long stuff they want to do they split it up so you can watch it in "parts" rather than all at once. Of course you have to plan that a bit more, you can't really record something then split it or the splits will be forced, rather than being a "ok, join us tomorrow when we'll be talking about x", and then you just end that part and go straight into the next part at the same time, and post the video the next day or something.

Plus, you know... it adds more videos to your channel, and adds more structure to your conversations.

Also, Olek is wrong many times in the first 40 minutes. I'm disappointed. Big Show won the first Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal? As a Claudio Castagnoli fan I'm mad at this besmirchment of Cesaro's WWE legacy!

Show's how much I care about that match then. I mixed up for the first and second. If it helps, last night, I forgot entirely about Shane vs. Taker at last year's event. I'm far more on point about 2005 and earlier....you know...when wrestling mattered.

Good idea on breaking it up. This one got a little rushed in the sense that we had a pseudo-deadline of wanting to get it up today. But I didn't even think about breaking the interviews up, or even podcasts like this. Makes perfect sense...

Now Olek being wrong... Shhhhh... We don't tell him that! We just let him do it!

Yeah I'd agree with Pete saying a break up would be nice. Doing like a 3 part 45 minute thing would work. I listen to a TON of podcasts and depending on the topic/entertainment I'm out at 60 minutes. For your topic? Yeah I'd go for a 45 minute 3 part series.

Also...if I was in this I feel I'd rant about the Cena/Nikki vs Miz/Maryse match. I still find it laughable that we're supposed to take Nikki as this huge threat haha. I mean Cena saying "you made the biggest mistake of your life" and boom Nikki comes out? Bitch I wish you DIED IN THE WOMB!!!

But jokes aside, this match pisses me off. So many people praise Cena for his mic work. When he is serious, he is damn good. Yet so many times he's not and all he does is turn his opponent into a punch line making his own opponent the under dog. Cena will then of course go over because he's John Cena and it leaves people thinking said opponent is left with nothing. Often times this counts. The Cena/Bray feud comes to my mind. Bray was built up as this scary presence and somebody to be feared. He feuds with John Cena. What does Cena do? He turns Wyatt into a joke. It made me soooooo mad because in the end Cena wins and LOLZ fuck Bray Wyatt?

This match at Mania gives me the same feel. It's sooooooooooo pro Cena/Nikki that for me it makes so much sense for Miz/Maryse to win. Cena will take time off for some movie and Miz can talk about how he's 2-0 vs Cena at Mania. Miz can continue to be built like the heel he currently is. Then Cena comes back and whoops his ass. Built in feud for Cena to return. Makes sense.

Yet we likely know that Cena and Nikki will win. Cena's promo's just from last Smackdown has created Miz and Maryse as the under dogs. Cena says that he's gonna crush Miz no problem. Yet here we are once again with Cena being the face here and FOR FUCK SAKE Cena is gonna win.

Yet we're supposed to believe Miz and Maryse as the heels? This match would all be saved if Miz and Maryse wins. I just don't think anybody has the faith this destination will happen. Because if the Nexus storyline is involved we all know that Cena is basically Hogan 2.0 BROTHER!!!

I think Ian hit the nail on the head with this as the only time we could find before mania to record was the friday as I was away on vacation until lunch time on Friday so we had to just go for it to get it up before the show.

In future (we ARE doing more of these, probably every couple of weeks - next one pencilled in for the 14th) we'll be looking to go around 45 - 60 minutes with 60 being the absolute maximum we'll record for. It just happened that the first podcast was for Mania and damn, that's a lot of matches haha.

... And by 60 minutes he means per "Part" because the three of us are long-winded, and REALLY crave our airtime... Or maybe that's just me ;)

Ultimately I don't think any of us planned on doing 2 hours, but it taught us a lot. If there are 74,000,000,000,000,000,000 matches, we really don't HAVE to talk about them all. The one in two weeks we are aiming to talk Wrestlemania fallout plus how the direction is going thus far. Everyone and their dog will be doing straight recap shows, so we kind of figured let's talk about the major storylines coming out, I think. That could change because we really just started discussing the second show yesterday-ish when people actually made it clear they did listen.

BTW, thanks to everyone for the feedback! I think I speak for all three of us that this was a blast.

To be honest, I enjoyed the interviews of the fedders a lot more than hearing preview of Wrestlemania matches actually, but that's mainly because I dislike WWE with a passion cos of their predictable matches and in my opinion not that great of a company anymore.

I also think you could do a recap of SCW PPV's sometimes too. If the next podcast is going to be about WWE, I won't be listening since I just have no interest in WWE at all.

I do think you do podcasts great Jake and I enjoyed the interviews you did with Greg and Wasley. I do want more fedding podcasts and I really hope you consider continuing with that.

This podcast we're doing with the three of us is a WWE podcast Fizz, so you probably won't want to listen.

But, we have talked about doing some SCW-centric stuff too, maybe a pre-rise to greatness or even post rtg one, something that's scw based but a discussion rather than just a one on one interview.

Oh both are going to be continued, for sure. I'm working with Ash on finding a good timeline for his, to wrap up "The Brotherhood Saga" of interviews, so then I can start just doing interviews with any/everyone. I've enjoyed the shoot-style nature of them, and the honesty has been stellar from both Greg and Wasley. I've been trying to come up with ideas of what else I could do, from an efed standpoint, and approach it from an angle that may not be common. Like I know "Sharper Scoop" radio version looks at things from an IC point of view, so I wouldn't want to reinvent the wheel there. So I'm definitely open to ideas, if you have some.

For the CVoW podcast, that one isn't necessarily strictly WWE. The reason we did the Wrestlemania preview was to kind of see if we had chemistry, see if it would be interesting to listen to, etc. We figured we'd start of with the "easy" topic, and I think our second WWE one coming up Friday will be a little more palatable because there has been some weird ass shit happening, but as it grows and evolves, I could see it just turning into discussions about major wrestling news in general. Hell it could slowly evolve into something not necessarily centered around wrestling, too, and it just become a show where we talk about whatever. We just wanted to start off on a comfortable topic we all had decent amounts of knowledge on. And the name "The Cynical View of Wrestling" is supposed to depict the sentiment you have. I'm like you where a lot of the time I'm just angry at the product because it's predictable in a bad way. I don't mind predictability, like Goldberg losing to Lesnar, when it was actually done well with a "cheat code" style video game match. It was at least entertaining. But I am a major cynic when it comes to pro wrestling, Olek is the one who tries to see where things will/won't work from a logic standpoint, and Wasley is just opinionated on everything. We ended up complimenting one another and so I foresee it broadening its scope down the road.

Ultimately, both are getting their feet wet. I'd like to find other podcasts to get on board, so the channel can have more content. If it gets to the point we have a lot of "shows," I'll do something like RiotCast, and get a website, and set it up as an actual podcast site, rather than just uploading to YouTube (although I might do both).

Trust me when I say I LOVE this kind of feedback. It helps the whole process continue to grow and evolve.

I think when we get a little more comfort in the format and the flow, live streaming could be a definite inclusion.

I'll be honest, I'm more interested in the efed world, IC and OOC stuff more than all your views of wrestling, I have my own and I'll never change my views. I'll skim through it but I won't sit there and listen to a whole broadcast about WWE or anything else in wrestling, there are a thousand podcasts on YouTube and everyone has an opinion where most I disagree with. The interviews with handlers was unique. Stuff like the A-Show was epic and gave that extra flare to the game. That's what SCW needs, no offense gents but this is just another podcast to me much as I like you three.

Record the good stuff, wrestling opinions are like assholes, we all have one and most are mainstream these days, like lemmings, give me something to look forward to. My two cents.

Oh I get that Omar, and yeah, everyone is doing their own wrestling-themed thing. Like I said, I have a vision of making this into a true podcast "network" where it's just one of many. I just need to find some more people who want to jump on board. From experience in the media world, that's how any show can begin to garner a fanbase, by people stumbling on it when actually looking for other things.

Like take Buzzfeed for example (and I'm not comparing this to the level of Buzzfeed, just trying to put it in context), they do such a variety of videos, and some involve people simply trying food. Ok, everyone does that. But they can pull people in who may typically only watch the Try Guys or Worth It shows.

There's one network I'd like to model myself after, and by no means are they like some media conglomerate, but simply have brought together a lot of varying podcasts under one umbrella. That's where I'd like to see it ultimately end up.

Now do I want to do efed stuff? OH YEAH! Like Wasley said, it can be difficult, however, with people like you playing women, or in Wasley's case, being completely unable to understand ;) and playing a guy from Jersey. If Olek ever decided to do more of the "A Show" or things like that, why not throw it under an SCW-branded podcast under the umbrella? Or branch out, and bring in other efeds to want to do ones for their feds and make it an efed-branded podcast, would be fun as well. HELL we could have each fed have their own, for all I care. Like I said, this is a baby of mine that I want to see go somewhere. There are podcasts I want to do alone, about my nonsense views on things like politics (which you and I both know I'm quite opinionated on), but until I can fully recognize the vision, I don't want to just throw something up there.

The way I see it... The Cynical View Media Network has two Shows, so far...

"The Social Misfit Sitdown with Jake Starr"
"The Cynical View of Wrestling Podcast"

I want to do more... Well I say I, but I mean I want to make the channel grow with others who want to do their own things as well. And who knows... Maybe the wrestling show turns into a bitch-fest that people find humorous because of the interactions between Olek, Wasley and I, versus what we talk about? Maybe it evolves to a show all its own, where it's not just wrestling-centric. We don't know. All we're doing is starting where we're comfortable and trying to entertain some people here and there.

But trust me... Efed related stuff has my brain going...

Remember Ian, you and I graduated with the same major. I did Sports talk radio in Los Angeles for years, I get it. I appreciate you wanting to build on the Network and wish you nothing but success, at the same time all I'm saying is I talk to you three dudes on a normal basis and would rather hear stuff that's more unique to what we do here in SCW and even stretch out to UWA with handler interviews OOC, wrestler, promoter & manager interviews and insights IC than a wrestle podcast. One of the things I loved about ULW was Nick did podcasts and he had Jerry interview Mr. D and that was a lot of fun. That's what we are missing, again no offense but I could care less what you guys thought of Mania. ;)

Ha ha no worries man... That's why I want to figure something out to broaden the efed side of things, since a lot of people seem to like that. Whether it's owners doing like Olek, and having their podcasts be "Sharper Scoops" or "A-Shows" to help the IC world, or if it's more interviews (which admittedly I'm still feeling pretty novice at, hence why I am starting with the people I know best already) to give insight into the OOC world, I want to do what would be enjoyable.

I will say I don't know a lot of efeds outside of SCW, but I know a lot of others do, and if they want to have a place to do their stuff, I welcome them! And If I need to make a channel dedicated to efed stuff, I'm completely game to do that as well. I'm not sitting here with any "oh it's what I want to do period." I have a blast talking and yammering about whatever. Hell, if "Jake Starr" the character ever had a chance to step to an actual microphone, I'd LOVE that. I still would love to be interviewed on my own show, lol. So trust me... The efed stuff I want to grow... I just may need a little help if we want to make ie broad and bring multiple efeds in as well.

We had a good chat after we'd finished recording the post cast - that I think actually lasted as long as the podcast did! - and we've got a few good ideas to run with for in character AND out of character stuff that centres around the game. Should progress nicely over the course of the year, if we can pull stuff together!

When I have time this weekend I'm gonna listen to all this stuff. I don't listen to many podcasts, usually just things from PWInsider (cause I pay for that shit, lol) but I know you guys (kinda, ha) so it'll be fun.

Looking forward to the IC/fed related stuff, and I'd be up for an interview type thing if anyone was interested, although I assume I'd be far down the list, haha.

AHH GIRLS! COOTIES! ;)

The post-recording chat was actually a completely blast. Several ideas were ran with and I was to emphasize that if anyone knows ANY fed wanting a platform (albeit small) to do their thing on to get exposure, and our fed conversely, regardless of whether it's IC or OOC get them in touch with me. I'm happy to get them up as well, and make sure they are properly focused like our shows are. Part of me thinks an efed-focused channel, under the bigger umbrella, would have a niche of its own, and help spread efeds names and stories across a slightly bigger platform than just word of mouth.
